“Mostly Enjoyable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

We stayed for two nights in this Charming country estate and its really excellent staff. Set in beautiful gardens. Our room was very spacious and elegantly decorated with our own patio area and garden which lead down to a lake with woodland at the back.

Dining time for dinner was set in advance and you pre-order dinner at breakfast time. The dining staff were very accommodating as one of our party requested steak instead of the set menu. This was readily done.

One or two disappointing points. Our pre arranged laundry which was given in early in the morning had not been done. When we went to collect it following a full day out, we were told that it had not been collected and we were given the bag of dirty laundry back. This was a huge let down as we had been relying on it being done as per the arrangements.

On the morning of our departure we arose to discover we did not have any electricity or water. This was rectified following a call to reception and a wait for someone to come to switch a generator on. This also resulted in having to settle up in cash due to the credit card machine not operating due to the electricity outage. We learned later that this had been a prearranged outage.

We had a great time here, the food and service were great. The owners gave us great advice where and what to see in the area and there's actually an elephant park right opposite the road leading to the property. We celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary in SA and they went to the bother of setting up a private dinning room for us. The staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough for you.

The warm welcome on arrival was just the start of a wonderful stay at Lairds Lodge. The furnishings and decor are beautiful and stylish throughout, and the hosts are friendly and helpful. We stayed in one of the comfortable and spacious garden rooms, with a patio opening onto a lawn facing a small lake with woodland beyond.
On the first night of our 3-night stay we opted to stay for dinner at the Lodge, thinking we would go out to Plettenberg Bay on the other 2 nights. That dinner was the best meal we had during our whole 3-week trip in South Africa, so we stayed in for dinner the other nights too! Drinks in the lounge before dinner was a great opportunity to meet other guests, and on two of the nights all the diners were seated around one large table which made it especially sociable. The breakfasts were also great.
We found Lairds Lodge was ideally located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, close to the N2 but in a secluded location. Cecilia and the other team members were eager to help with suggestions for spending our days in the area.
Our stay at Lairds Lodge was a real highlight of our trip, and we highly recommend it.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Don't let the location put you off - it's not acutally on the N2 - the lodge is tucked away, off a gravel drive and set in lovely grounds.
The staff and owners are very welcoming and keen to ensure you have a wonderful stay - nothing is too much trouble.
We thought the lodge had a homely feel, there are lots of large and comfy sofas (inside and out) to snuggle into and enjoy a glass of wine or two !. The bedrooms are huge, very well appointed and have a small patio. There's a small outdoor pool and loungers - but sadly it was too cold for us to enjoy the outdoors on our trip.
The food was fabulous, we particularly enjoyed the quirky evening meal - which was a fixed menu (of up to 4 courses) - that had to be pre-ordered before 4pm - so essentially we decided how many of the courses we wanted to eat that evening whilst eating breakfast. Everyone staying at the lodge dines at the same time, so you can either eat alone or be sociable and join other guests at the long table.

We had a fantastic time and would not hesitate to go back !

What a gorgeous boutique hotel, set close to Plettenberg and Storms River. We stayed in a suite which accommodated our family of 2 plus 2 (aged 5 and 23 months) perfectly. The rooms are beautifully appointed in contemporary African wares. The food here is amazing and staff most friendly. Expansive, manicured gardens. Lovely spots on the terrace or reading rooms to relax with a cup of tea or glass of wine. We will definitely return if back in SA. The lodge would be a perfect, cosy winter retreat.

This was our second trip to Lairds and our experience was just as good as the first time.

The rooms and the grounds are fabulous. The lodge (read Country House) is beautiful. The weather when we visited was awful, but the lodge was always warm and welcoming with candles, lamps and log fires burning.

The food is amazing and we liked the fact you could now choose the number of courses to have. Whilst each element of every course is prepared with care and attention, four courses for four nights in a row would have been just too much!

Thanks to Sue who helped us plan our days and the whole team who looked after us and sang Happy Birthday to my stepson on the eve of his 15th birthday. This was the second time we'd heard you all sing and it is so beautiful. Thanks also for the packed breakfast as we had to leave so early the following day.

We stayed here for two nights on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. Our room was spacious and luxurious with its own outside seating area. The grounds and pool area were exceptional. The staff were truly welcoming and could not do enough for us. In the morning we received superb guidance from the reception staff to help us get the best from our stay in the area. The food was excellent with a large choice at breakfast and "gourmet" evening meal. A nice touch was that in the evening we had the choice of dining alone or at a larger group table. We chose the latter option and had two interesting evening meals.
