We stopped off here just for one night on our trip down the garden route. Whilst a beautiful lodge it is really out of town, past lots of squatter camps/temporary settlements and not in walking distance of any restaurants/sights to see so you need to drive.

This probably doesn't matter though as the lodge is truly lovely, extremely friendly staff who were really flexible with the evening dinner which is really worthwhile. It's normally a communal dining experience but after 3 days on safari making small talk with people we wanted to dine just the two of us so they arranged this and adapted the menu for us (as we're quite fussy) so we had a really great meal.

The next morning we were up extra early to go diving so they start up breakfast for us at 7.30 instead of 8 as usual. They are very keen on fruit though which is great if you like fruit for breakfast - we'd rather just toast and orange juice which they do too, but they looked a little hurt we didn't eat the fantastic spread.

Recommended as a stop off - do stay for dinner, but turn up a bit later as there is not much to do in situ other than read books and lounge by the pool.

Stayed at Lairds Lodge for 2 nights in March. We were celebrating my husbands 60th birthday and they had left a bottle of bubbly and a huge platter of fruit for us on arrival - nice touch.

The room was large with our own private patio and little garden. No TV which didn't worry us any. You are well outside Plettenberg so walking to find a restaurant is not an option. Dinner at Lairds Lodge is a communal affair and the first night we joined in. Food was good and it was good to meet other travellers. The second night we wanted something different and they very happily recommended and booked the restaurant and organised us a taxi to and from the town.

We asked for suggestions of things to do in the area and they suggested Birds of Eden and Monkeyworld - both of which were fascinating. Lairds even gave us maps to get there.

There is a pool in the garden although it is a bit shaded by trees in the afternoon. Loungers were comfortable.

Can't think of anything I didn't like about the place.

We visited South Africa in Jan 2008 and Lairds Lodge was our first stop. What a fantastic place. I cannot believe that anyone could criticise it. The food was the best that we had during our stay and it was so reasonably priced.
Our room was gorgeous and the shortbread simply too good - I never left any !!
Staff at Lairds Lodge are all fantastic and the assistance that they offer to help you organise your days is really helpful.
Swimming pool small but perfect and sunbeds the most comfortable I have ever used.
The house is beautiful and the grounds are immaculate.
We loved it so much we are hoping to return next Jan.
Well worth a visit.

We stayed at Lairds Lodge for 2 nights and were totally satisfied with all aspects of our stay. We were shocked to read the review by Banyan and cannot understand what they were describing as it bore no relation to our experience.

The room was spacious, extremely comfortable and very clean. The bed was firm and a good size. The quality of fixtures and fittings were good, toiletries of a high quality and nice clean, white crisp cotton linen. The housekeeping staff were very attentive and when the hairdryer was found to be faulty was replaced within minutes of us contacting the reception. The room had a high ceiliing and opened out onto a small attractive pond and whilst the weather was warm the room felt nice and cool without the necessity for air conditioning. We had a small patio area with a table and seating.

The grounds were beautifully maintained. The pool area was very attractive and clean. Each morning the loungers were uncovered and fresh towels put in place.

When we arrived we were advised of the dining options and chose to eat at the main table with approx 10 other guests rather than sit on a table on our own. This itself was a most pleasurable experience as we had the opportunity to talk to other guests from different parts of the world and share experiences. We should add that none of the other guests we spoke to had anything other than praise for the accommodation and food.

Dinner comprised of a well balanced menu and was extremely well presented and a high quality. Having eaten at several Michelin starred restaurants in the past we would rate the quality as good as any we have tried. Food appeared to be locally sourced and included the freshest of ingredients. The wine list whilst not the most extensive we have seen offered a well proportioned balance of good quality wines.

Breakfast wasa mixture of a comprehensive cold buffet and hot made to order - again of good quality.

The staff were very attentive, courteous and extremely helpful. Each morning we were asked what activity we were planning and helpful suggestions were given. On each occasion if a booking was required with a local comapny then they quickly arranged this on our behalf.

Overall our experience was fantastic and we would have no hesitation in recommending this establishment. and indeed will definitely stay there again on our next visit to South Africa.

Friendly welcome and a cup of tea. Second most tasty breakfast on our trip. Very attentive and superb knowledge of the area, will book for you and have maps of everywhere local. The only beef we had was they charged for the bottled water in the room - don't annoy people when you have a good thing. We have stayed at an other hotel that charged for water in the Maldives and it got such a persistant report on Tripadvisor that they have stopped. Listen! Very good atmosphere and feeling to the Lodge. Accomodation excellent and lovely grounds and we sampled the swimming pool. Ate in and loved the arrangement. Also good eating places in Plettenberg which is not too far away.
