“Full of character.”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Due to my job (coach driver for a National Holiday company), I get to travel to many places. I don't have any say in the choice of hotel but the company has got it right in the case of the Hotel Kurfuerst in Kamp-Bornhofen, Germany. it is so full of character, little niches where they are still discovering long lost relics of it's past as a Church and 'Nunnery' ... it does need some repair and refurbishment but that just adds to its charm. Ideally situated along the banks of the Rhine with stunning scenery on it's doorstep; The hosts (Marcus, Ella and Connie) are friendly, speak very good English; the food is plain and simple but tasty; Entertainment is provided by Friedl on his organ (Freddy) keeping the guests laughing and joking in his own innocuous style of music and games. A very quaint place to stay for a few days.

Weve just returned from a five day coach holidaywith National Holidays We have stayed at thishotel before and once again we have had a lovely stay .The hotel is basic but very clean and comfortable There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the hotel but we took atravel kettle and tea and coffee with us and there is a Lidls very close byThe food at the hotel is good not fabulous but what do you expect for the price you pay We paid just £160 for 5days all inclusive and were very satisfied with the food drink and entertainment at this very quaint hotel The staff Robert Connie Marcus could not do enough for us And Freddy the enterainer Well what can I say YOU WILL HAVE A LAUGH, just go with the flow. The downsideof the holiday were the coach drivers had no knowledge whatsoever about the places we visited and there is no English information anywhere so Iwould advise anyone going to take some info with them. The scenery is beautiful, the setting for the hotel is fairytale They say you get what you pay for well we certainly did and more. I would go back to this hotel again but hope we get better informed coach drivers T he journey is extremely long but worth it when you get there .The journey back was awful as we only stopped at a wine ware housewhere the coach drivers stocked up .There was nothing but a dirty fast food outlet selling chicken and chips so make sure you take something to eat with you .the ratings im giving are for the hotel not thefull holiday

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view although there is no lift it is worth the climb

We recently visited the hotel as part of a short break to the Rhine Valley.

The hotel is an old convent with lots of character, set adjacent to the Rhine itself in a nicely pictureseque spot.

The rooms are spacious, warm, clean and tidy but would benefit from a kettle (bring a travel mug if you fancy a cuppa late at night). The staff are friendly, attentive, very knowledgeable about the area and really cant do enough to help - they are fabulous.

Our package was half-board which consisted of a continental breakfast and evening meal. The breakfast was unexciting but perfectly adequate to set us up for the day and there was a choice of evening meals. The only slight bug-bear is that meal times were rigidly set and there appeared to be little leaway but other packages might have some flexibility.

We also had a free bar from 8:30 - 11:30 every night in the weinstube, which was the usual house wines, beers and soft drinks. Also in attendance was the resident entertainer, who sang and did the karaoke - the prevailing view from most people was that he was "so bad, he was good....". Our view was that he was just bad, so we stayed away and got the train to Koblenz: the railway station is a 5 minute walk away, the journey is only 20 minutes and the trains run until late at night.

We were also put off by the fact that smoking is allowed by virtue of a specially installed filtration system which didn't seem to be particularly effective and the room became steadily smokier as the night wore on - some people might think this is a bit fussy but we have got used to no smoking bars now and this was not particularly welcome (sorry smokers, no offence intended).

Kamp Bornhofen is a scenic and compact village with various bars and restaurants, very few of which were open at the time we were there, but will probably be buzzing in the high season. You can catch boat trips along the Rhine and trains to all major cities every hour - there is plenty of walking too and a nice pathway along the river in both directions.

Hotel Kurfuerst is what it is: a pleasant, friendly budget hotel which you will be hard to criticise unless you are paying a lot of money (which we didn't).

My family and I have been twice now to this hotel-both with National Holidays. The first time we travelled on the 'Eurothon' 18 hour+journey by coach and the last time we visited Camp Bornhofen we came the 'shorter'- overnight ferry from Hull route with National Holidays! Yes, the drivers' demenours are variable but the Hotel; Marcus and his hard-working staff are GREAT! Yes, the hotel isn't five-star but it's comfortable and clean, the food is good, the choice of drinks are good and very reasonable, and the cellar-bar and entertainment on an evening is good, old-fashioned FUN! It's always perplexed me that people pay for cheap holidays with National and expect five-star treatment; my mesage to you, if you're one of them is if you want to have a five-star, overpriced and overrated holiday then pay for it! what you get at the Kurfurst is first-class German hospitality, in a beautiful setting with great value thrown in! My famil;y and I cannot praise this hotel highly enough and we will definitely be going back, probably for Christmas this year! Finally, I would just like to retort back at some of the anti-smoking brigade who have stayed previously at this hotel. My family and I, or at least the vast majority of my family, smoke, and we all find it so 'refreshing'-no apologies for the pun- that we can have a drink and smoke indoors at this hotel just as one could do before Britain became a totalitarian, intolerant, bullying nanny-state hostile to individual liberty and freedom. Our message to you is simple - if you don't like the fact that in Germany-but not in all parts of Germany I hasten to mention-people still have the freedom to drink and smoke indoors - stay in the UK for your next holiday and leave happy, fun-loving drinkers and smokers to enjoy themselves in, more civilised, foreign climes!!

Lots of character in this hotel, the staff very friendly, can't do enough for you. Markus the manager very interactive with the guests and wants to please.

The building goes back to 1600 but cleanliness is paramount here, food very good nice to try things German style.
Our party both had river view rooms at no extra cost and they were quite large and the hotel was very warm and cosy.
The area is very quiet this time of year as the residents are either on holiday or being renovated so not much open outside of hotel however after a day out we were not fussed about going out as hotel will provide a bit of entertainment.

Trips out good, we paid for a trip up the Rhine and it was lovely, Markus said the place will become alive from Easter

We went with National the journey was long but expected. The drivers went up to 5 hours before a stop which was a bit uncomfortable not being able to stretch your legs.

Overall very good value for money

Room Tip: We e mailed the hotel after booking and asked for a Rhine view room with a shower and asked for the...

Lovely friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. Marcus the host a star managed his 97 guests with panache and offered good advice on the area including the best route to the feuding brother castles. Very quiet around at this time of year, lots of things shut until beginning of March but scenery and traditional buildings plentiful. Evening entertainment was a laugh and despite being a hotel with some smoking areas there was still a non smoking cellar area in the atmospheric cellar bar. Food was local fare, adequate and filling. Rooms basic but clean and warm. Bus journey with National bit of a trek but warm welcome when arrived (10.15pm)

Room Tip: Apparently family rooms are a bit more spacious

We just came back on a National Holidays. I will not say anything about National Holidays That review will be seperate from the hotel.
This is a great Hotel if you are a smoker. You can smoke anywhere except your room ( which is where we stayed most of our time at the hotel) or diningroom. don't get me wrong I love the hotel and would go back but being x smokers we were not able to go to the kool celler bar at night becouse of the smoke. Rooms are VERY CLEAN, and the beds were very comfy, No Telly or kettle which I knew about before we went and so took a kettle and books.GREAT WATER PRESSURE!! in the shower. The staff were very nice and would do anything to make you happy and the food was good. 3 choices to choose from for supper. Breakfast was a bit lax but filling. Cold cuts bread toast and cereal coffee/Tea and juice. All in all nice little stop over. Lidl is just a few yards away for all your bits and pieces. So anyway was very happy with the hotel and would go back

Room Tip: take a kettle and beware that this is a smoking hotel
