Not knowing how far we would get between Pisa and Paestrum, we decided to exit the route at Tarquinia, famous for its Etruscan archeology. On the way into the village we spotted a newly built large house on the left with BED AND BREAKFAST on a banner, so we pulled off and stopped. It turned out to be one of the best values in our 5 week trip to Italy. We had a one bedroom ensuite on the second floor with large balconies and air conditioning. On the ground floor a large reception with fridge, cooking facilities and washing machine for guest use and an enthusiastic welcome from our hostess made us feel right at home. Everything was spotless. Our little bichon dog got a warm welcome, too. Naturally we were a tiny bit disappointed in the "breakfast pack" but did have fresh juice, a nice touch.
There was a supermarket about one kilometer away, but we didn't find that until the next morning: it would have helped because Tarquinia is not strong on eating establishments and we had a mediocre pizza at one of the nearby seaside resorts.
But the B and B was a wonderful find. It was relatively quiet and felt very safe.
