“Couldn't have asked for a better Honeymoon”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

There is nothing negative to say about this resort. My husband and I went for our honeymoon Sept 2011 and still talk about it often. It was truly heaven on earth! It is private enough, with only a small number of villas, but the activities, happy hours and dinners are with everyone on the island, so it's very easy to make friends (we still keep in touch with the couples we met there).

Make sure you reserve the sand spit before you go, it is truly breathtaking!!!

The food, the spa, the staff, the bar, the activities are all perfect! You will not be disappointed!

We were there for 7 nights. I couldn't fault the wonderful staff or the professional managers. Many thanks Julie and Darryl and all the staff. Room, food and all facilities exactly as seen in online brochure. We went there to dive. It was amazing. The soft coral and abundance of colourful fish just fantastic. Bilo, our dive master was terrific. We could have stayed an extra week as there are 20 dive sights. I would highly recommend the resort. I do feel, however, for the price paid, that alcohol should be included with meals at least (as with other small resorts around the world). We would definitely return in the future.

Room Tip: Room 9 has direct beach access.

Right from leaving the airport, we knew we where about to have the holiday of a lifetime, Sarah (our pilot) was lovely, then to the boat ride where we met some of the staff that made our time unforgettable. We arrived to a reception that was simply beautiful, then to our vale. It was breathetakingly beautiful, everything you see in the pictures doesn't prepare you for the beauty of the view and the rooms. The food and drinks where sensational, the staff amazing. Nightly entertainment was relaxing and Alan enjoyed his first taste of kava. Crab racing was a blast, snorkelling and the waters surrounding the island are spectacular. Our village visit was heart warming, and we loved our visit to both the Spa and the Love Shack. To Julie (have you found that octapus yet), Darryl and the rest of the staff, thank you for making this the most memorable, relaxing and romantic holiday ever.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have exceptional qualities, it depends what you are looking for, we chose 2 because...

We stayed at RD in Feb 2014 to mark the occasion of my 50th birthday.
It is a relaxing tropical paradise where you can do very little and stay quite private or really get active and go diving or deep sea fishing etc.
The rooms ,the gardens and restaurant area are absolutely beautiful and the stars on a fine night are as clear as in the Australian Outback. Sky Safari App is great to identify them all from your location.
Although RD is a tiny Island ,the larger Beqa Island and Pacific Harbour on the mainland are a short boat ride away and offer loads of additional activities. RD has great snorkelling and lots of water based activities to keep guests busy. Make sure you do the sand spit picnic.
I would particularly recommend the resort to first time visitors to Fiji as the staff are all Fijian and many are from the nearby areas. It is more personal than staying in a large hotel. For example when we went on the waterfall hike the guide took the boat past his village and had actually attended the school we walked through and the lady who was cleaning our room when we dropped back in said she was also from that area. Its pretty humbling to see how little the villagers have materially and that puts into perspective some reviewers comments about the staff not being able to anticipate their every whim.
Get to know the wonderful staff and let them share all that is great about Fiji and its people.Participate in the cultural activities like the Kava ceremony, choir singing at Sunday dinner and the local band entertainment. The prizes for the hermit crab races are pretty good too. You may be serenaded in private or public for your birthday, wedding etc if you are lucky and most of the staff gather to sing farewell as you leave.
If you want some thing please just ask nicely or leave a note. Don't stress about it and complain later on trip advisor that it wasn't automatically provided. There is a high staff to guest ratio and the staff are really eager to help you but they sometimes need guidance on more specific personal requirements different to their own culture. We asked for and received feather pillows and extra tea bags for the early morning as we drink tea before bed. Our room was always perfectly serviced with a generous supply of towels and toiletries. We used the spa for couples massages and were happy with the price and the services. If you want to consult more about your spa treatment or other activities on offer, just ask and someone will happily help you. If you need something more complicated ask the reception staff or the managers, rather than the room attendants.
The chef was happy to adjust the menu for dietary requirements (my husband does not eat seafood) ,to cook up a fresh catch or consider a special request. The food is all ordered for the day at breakfast so make sure you order a desert if you think you might like to try it because they make only what is needed and you can't change your mind later. If you are having a late lunch due to an activity then I would skip the entree at lunch time or you will never get through dinner. You can also book a private dining area or picnic and have meals on your room balcony for extra alone time. You can get extra snacks in the bar area if you ask.
We were surprised that the wifi was quite good considering the remoteness and we even got mobile phone reception in the restaurant area. There is a small air conditioned common room with satellite tv if you must catch that important ball game, there are books and board games and its a great place to cool down on a hot afternoon if you have had too much sun.
The PADI dive team and supplied equipment are great and we were talked into completing our open water diving course so that we could go on the shark dive. It was terrifying to think about ,but once there ,close up to the sharks it was just enthralling and amazing and you could never do anything like it in Australia or the US. We dived on 4 days and saw lion fish and beautiful soft coral .It was easy to have two dives in the morning and get back in time for lunch to relax and enjoy the resort in the afternoon as everything is close by. I recommend the afternoon transfer if you are diving to allow more days. As our villa was full, we were kindly and unexpectedly offered a different villa for day use as late checkout was not possible.
The plane in is very small, hot and not that easy to climb into so its worth changing into shorts for the transfers and having hat and sunscreen handy for the boat if you choose to sit outside. If you don't like small planes or are older or physically challenged, the more expensive helicopter transfer sounded great and can be adjusted to your individual timing requirements around flights and you land just near the restaurant. The boats are pretty basic but the boat trips are generally short. Plenty of sun protection including a broad brimmed hat and a top with sleeves are needed for the shark dive.
We stayed in room 5, a Davui suite, which has a great outlook and deck but all the rooms were very nice, we saw inside 2 less expensive rooms and I wouldn't hesitate to choose a cheaper room due to budget or timing or available specials. I'd save room 1 for guests who are less mobile as it may get some noise at night from the common areas and is less private.
Thanks for such special memories.

We stayed at Royal Davui December 2013 for 5 nights on our way to Sydney Australia. Royal Davui island is detached from the main island of Fiji and is a small island in Beqa lagoon (near Beqa island) near the south end of the main island of Fiji. To get to Royal Davui you take a small plane provided by the resort from Nadi to a small airstrip at the south end of Fiji, which is a great and cool trip in a single engine plane (but not for queasy fliers). Once landed you are taxi'd to a transport boat and taken to Royal Davui island.

Royal Davui is a very small island with room for maybe 15 total couples in its 15-16 bungalows (Bures). We stayed in an island plunge pool vale.

On arrival by boat you are taken to reception for welcome drinks, waivers and registration. This process was fast and easy. We arrived early and our villa was not ready so we were offered breakfast. Shortly after breakfast we got into our villa. At first impression the villa is impressive, big, lovely view and plunge pool, lovely bedroom. Our villa was split into an open air living room and a separate bedroom/master bath. The living room area has fully foldable French doors out to your deck and plunge pool, a sitting area and a bar with filtered water and a mini bar. The master bedroom has AC, doors to a sun lounge deck, nice bathroom and the bath is stocked with pure Fiji body products (nice).

Our overall impression of the bungalow was very good and it was comfortable. This is also where the first of our little issues came into play with Royal Davui, for starters our plunge pool desperately needed to be re-grouted but in addition the heat and jets did not work. Our AC in the master bedroom also was broken (this is day one). A call to management and both were "fixed", but as we would find out the pool would continue to break (daily) and the AC was adequate but not ever really cold enough. Everything looks seemingly well maintained until you find these few minor things. Normally I would overlook things such as this, but with the price charged (5 star+) I would expect these to be repaired (permanently).

The daily routine at Royal Davui is to wake up, have a wonderful breakfast (food was generally very good), sit by the pool, go snorkeling, get lunch, have drinks, go to dinner and repeat. We mixed this in with the Beqa bull/tiger shark dive which was excellent, minus the exception of the very small 20 foot open bow "dive boats" our resort used. Snorkeling at Royal Davui was pretty good, by pacific island standards, but it doesn't holdup to places like the Maldives or Egypt. For the normal enthusiastic snorkeler you will most likely be pleased. The main pool area is another area, which is fine, but needs updating and repairs. The main pool decking is old and cracked in places, loungers are in just-OK condition and the umbrella/umbrella stands need repair. Although still an excellent place to relax, there was a distinct lack of pool side bar/food service unless you raised some odd flag on the other side of the pool, which was in poor shape with a faded almost unreadable sign underneath it explaining such. During our trip we also visited the Spa, where we had a lovely and in my opinion inexpensive massage. Yet again though some attentions to detail are skipped and all spa bookings must be done through the front desk, not the spa itself, and the spa has no lounge area or receptionist. Might seem like a strange complaint, nut this is the first resort spa where you did not get to speak with the therapists about your treatments that you were choosing ahead of time/at booking. It was also not explained by the front desk at check in that this was the procedure. Most 5+ star resorts will also rake their beach daily and clean it of debris, also not done at Royal Davui. Again very minor stuff, but at 5 star + prices you expect things like this to be more buttoned up. My only other complaint about this particular resort is how loud the diesel generator for the island is, it isn't obnoxious, but it is again one of those items that other resorts in the Maldives that we have been to have managed to solve, it is supposed to feel like a remote island, hearing a huge diesel generator cranking away detracts from that a bit.

Aside from these complaints it is a beautiful island with good snorkeling, good food and excellent staff all around.

The main restaurant and bar as well as the food were always excellent, although drinks were pricey. I enjoyed the food very much, but would call it a little more foodie than my wife could handle. Thankfully the kitchen was always willing to make off-prefix menu dishes.

The main thing this resort has going for it is their staff. Everyone was really polite helpful and went above and beyond to try and make your stay nice.

I base my observations above on many stays at 5 star resorts all over the world, including island resorts. With some additional attention to detail this place could be 5 stars, unfortunately it is towing the line of 4-4.5 stars IMO. I hate to disagree with other reviewers, but if you stay at some of the nicer resorts in Bora Bora, Maldives, etc you will notice the difference (even at the same price point).

Room Tip: All of the rooms are nice, even in the most basic category.

Honeymoon of a lifetime! Exceptional spaces, exceptional staff and service and an exceptional area of the world. The island is exclusive to the resort. The diving and snorkelling in Beqa Lagoon is known. Great snorkelling. Pristine water. Paradise. The food was critical to the success of the week. The chef and staff were creative, professional and delivered high quality meals, plated beautifully. Every detail about our preferences was attended to with creativity. Excellent array of food on menu. Last the bsr tenders were great, the cocktails fun and very easy to sample .

Room Tip: Each of the rooms is stunning, we have stayed in two.

My husband and I went to Royal Davui in November. We loved it. The accommodation was great, food and wine was exceptional and the dive team was amazing. The diving was great and the shark dive was a fantastic experience. The other dives had great coral, wonderful swim throughs and fantastic wrecks. Wonderful to have two tank dives in the morning and then a beautiful lunch with great wine, afternoon snooze, followed by diner, the ultimate in luxury.
