“Hotel and restaurant worth the small detour”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

Rang to book but arrived much later than expected on a quiet Sun evening. Ushered straight into restaurant before room and made comfortable and welcome. Superb home cooked quality meal - my king prawn salad starter and steak main were spot on as was wife's fresh ravioli. Topped off with stunning Chateau de Budos 2009 red, recommended by host and an absolute bargain. Right on quiet square in cute town with good facilities. Hotel even had secure parking for our bikes. Highly recommended.

We can not thank enough the hotel staff for their generosity and availability! They were up super early to print our son's airplane tickets. The village is really nice, our son stayed at the chantier to help restore the Villandraut castle, the village is quiet and charming, the area is full of vineyards and very relaxing.

We were on vacation and end up cycling through a technical fault on a bike in this small but cozy hotel
The owner spoke to us in English which was very nice because our French is pretty sunk. He was very humorous.
The petit dejeuner was well looked after.
He even provided us with a tire repair kit, because I went through and it was nowhere to be found.
A must if you're in the area!

Room Tip: We found our room named: "La Vie en Rose" very romantic.

We stayed here for two nights as part of a cycle tour of the Bordeaux area - we thought the village of Villandraut was an excellent place to stay, hired a canoe for a couple of hours, visited the local castle ruin as well as visiting the local cafe bar! We had an interesting tour whilst at the castle by a young female graduate who was volunteering there. We ate at the Auberge restaurant both nights as the first night was so good! The owner made us feel very welcome, chatting with us late into the evening & providing a lovely picnic lunch one day! There were other restaurants within walking distance.
We had been warned that the hotel is closed until 5pm, it is only an issue on the day you arrive & we were able to work around this quite easily.
The room itself was full of character, a little small, but all in all a delightful place to stay!

This is a charming and comfortable hotel, where the owner has spent considerable effort in refurbishing and personalising each bedroom to make it into a bijou hotel. We were in Jade, with an eastern theme, which, although tastefully furnished, felt incongruous, overlooking a typically French square, within sight of the mediaeval chateau. The hotel itself is an ancient building, with fine old beams and large fireplaces in the public rooms. It is located in the middle of town, near to the fascinating chateau. The staff were friendly and we had a first-rate meal in the restaurant.

Unfortunately, the buffet breakfast was squeezed into a small, windowless area, which felt oppressive, especially as our neighbours were talking very loudly. We also felt neglected, as we had to find a member of staff to prepare a table, and then had to ask for dishes to be replenished, again after a hunt for a waitress. Fortunately, this had not happened at dinner the night before.

Our main criticism was that the hotel was closed between 15:00 and 17:00 every day. We had foolishly missed this fact in the small print on the Logis booking, but had not expected this in a medium-sized hotel (in a B&B maybe). We had been cycling for six hours and would have liked to rest, and have some cool shade. I spoke to someone at the Tourist Information office next door and she said that this was a regular occurrence, where guests turned up in all weathers and complained about the hotel being closed. This was certainly not the welcome that we expected or needed and my guess is that they will lose trade by doing this.

I booked this hotel through Logis de France and was expecting a nice simple hotel at a reasonable price. It was indeed a nice simple hotel, spotlessly clean, and run by very helpful, friendly staff, including the owner who speaks good English and took time to speak to me after dinner, as I was travelling alone by bike. The food was exceptional, fresh local ingredients, cooked with care and presented with pride. The village is small but interesting with a large castle, a couple of shops and restaurants. Worth a detour, let alone stopping if passing through.

Room Tip: All rooms individually decorated, mine was the Zen room decorated in Eastern style. Quirky but nice!
