I stayed there with my two girls (8 and 12) and although the walls were very thin and the windows were thin, so we heard the noise from the street, we got up with the typical sound of the 'campanile' (the bells from the Italian churches). I loved especially the very friendly atmosphere at the restaurant. The children were the queens of the evening! They were treated like royals! On Saturday we walked to the market nearby! This market is there since I was a small child and we really enjoyed our stay! We even walked over to the Swiss part of Ponte Tresa! If you like you can leave your car in Switzerland and walk over to Italy! Just saying...but you may leave your car in front of the hotel since it has a security camera! I would recommend this place!!!

I used this hotel because my business colleague stayed at the same hotel, so I booked from Booking.com, using American Express and I thought I prepaid because all hotels in the area was fully booked. However, I managed to find another hotel, but could not cancel this hotel anyway, because I could get no refund. When the end, it seemed like I hadn't prepaid anyway, it was only insurance for Booking.com, and needed to pay the hotel with VISA.

Now to the hotel review:

Looks good from the outside, and the placement is good. The inside of the hotel is tidy, but old and not too good looking. Very small elevator, but it's only 3 floors, so no problem unless you have lot of luggage.

I had a double room, which was old, but again, tidy. Cleaness is overall good and new towels every day, but shower head could be cleaned now and then. Very small shower, and my room must have been close to the hot water boiler, because it appeared immediately in my shower. Water pressure is not the best. Actually, I thought the beds were quite ok, even I see other people may review it to not so good.

Don't stay at the hotel to watch TV. Italian only channels and small TV in the room.

My room also had a great view of the lake, and a nice balcony to sit outside.

The staff is ok, but they're english is far from perfect. But they speak more english than the rest of local residents.

There are wifi access in the rooms, but it's very slow. Wifi coverage in reception and breakfast area was however not accessible.
Breakfast is not worth the price which is €5. Better to go to local cafe nearby if you have the chance, and pay less.

Summarized: It's not the hotel you would prefer. If it's your only choice, it's ok and cheaper than the rest.

Very unfriendly staff at the reception. Lady was in a bad mood, slammed doors. Not really cleean rooms. Room rate was directly taken from the credit card without asking. Never again. Shower very small. Hot water not all the time. Roomdoor difficult to open.

I rarely write reviews unless I've had a really good experience or a really bad one - Unfortunately, this falls in the later! I arrived very late (2am) due to flight problems so I was very tired and maybe a little short tempered. However, the hotel was closed and I had to call a number on the door. The receptionist told me she did not speak english (which I later found she did!) and she was at home. After a lengthy broken english conversation, she appeared from within! Again after a heated conversation, I was turned away - At 2am, in a strange place and not speaking the local language!! I managed to find a hotel on the Swiss side who were very helpful but at more than twice the price! The next morning I return to Socrate to complain to the manager only to find the same receptionist at the desk! Apparently, no management were available. Another receptionist then came out who was much more helpful and accommodation. She offered me a double room instead of the single I had book (having said that, I had already been informed that there were no more single rooms available) but no other compensation (apparently an apology was sufficient!).

So to the hotel: The rooms are ok - Reasonably clean but basic. There is no a/c, no english channels on the TV, the bed is very hard and the shower cubicle tiny! But the view over the lake (if you get a room with a view) is superb!! Also, you need to be back by 12am-1am to avoid being locked out....

Breakfast (if you can call is breakfast) is about the worst I've seen in a hotel - Very little choice, of poor quality and on my last day only half the breakfast was put out because "it's not possible to put all the breakfast out for only one room!!!

The two stars I've given it are for the good value for money at the price I paid and the situation right on the Swiss border.

Room tip: Ask for a good room, preferably overlooking the lake.

Room very simple. Heating/cooling did not work. Bathroom über small. Bed uncomfortable. Breakfast was included but was of poor quality. Staff very nice, the only plus. Literally on border. Front and back entrances on different side of Italian customs! Wouldn't stay here again.
