I had the privilege to host UK friends at Esiweni lodge in Nambiti Game Reserve near Ladysmith. The Game Reserve is well stocked with game and the big 5. For our UK guests it was important to be in a malaria free area and Nambiti is the one big Game Reserve in KWA-Zulu Natal that is totally malaria free.
The lodge was decadent luxury experience perched on a cliff overlooking the valley and waterfall. It is an intimate lodge with only 5 superb private rooms. A pleasure for me was the ability to shower or bath in the outside facilities. Similarly one can lie in bed with all the curtains open and one can relax in private and enjoy the panoramic scenery.
Magda prepared lovely local cuisine and the night at the Boma was to be remembered. She looked after our every need. Her staff were all a pleasure and attended to all our needs.
The highlight was to benefit from the bush experience of Natie, Esiweni’s resident Game Ranger; for our Game Drives always seemed to be the first to come across a kill or exciting find and then he would vector in the other lodges via radio. He had an amazing knowledge of not only the game, but the tree and birdlife and this made the Game drives a wonderful learning experience. Few get to witness a Cheetah kill and we arrived but a few minutes after a kill. Natie would watch the animals, or listen to the bush sounds and then say—there is something happening over there—and surely enough—a few minutes later we would come across some predator activity. We all valued his respect for & knowledge of the bush.
To take my guests to Esiweni turned out to be my wisest decision in years
