It is seldom that you find that a accommodation venue does all the right things, and also that they do the things right. An absolute pleasure!
I would love to have a book on the history as it was told.

Spion Kop Lodge was my home away from home during a 5 week volunteer project at the near by school where I taught English with 5 other university volunteers.

my whole time in South Africa and at Spion Kop was truly anazing and one I will not forget.

Upon arrival to Spion Kop we were greeted by both Lynette and Raymond and I remember Lynettes extremely comforting words 'for the next 5 weeks I am your South African mother and Spion Kop is your home.'

The Setting:
Spion Kop is idealic! The mountainous back drop is breathtaking and the stunning array of cottages really add to your African experience. Just close to the entrance lies the Spion Kop nature reserve which homes giraffe, rhino and zebra to name but a few! The setting of the lodges provide privacy still with a sense of safety and comfort. Waking up to 'Kudo' grazing on the grass and roaming the grounds was a natural occurrence!!

The Accomodation:
The cottages range from self catering to catered. My time there was spent in the self catering cottage, we did however recieve a free complementary breakfast on arrival with sandwiches pre prepared in the lodge for us!
The lodge itself was traditionally decorated and had numerous beds to choose from. There was 6 of us staying together and we had the choice of 3 rooms. The lodge had a kitchen/dining area and lovely huge showers in the bathroom!

The lodges were cleaned daily and any washing that was left out was taken by the maids and returned promptly the next morning! The lodge was always spotless!

On evenings we would venture to the main lodge to socialise with Lynette, Raymond and the rest of the Heron family and guests.
The lodge itself hosts a cute and intimate bar area with a choice of drinks, a greeting/lounge area and a dining room that overlooks the stunning views!

The Hosts:
The Heron family can only be described as loving and welcoming. During my time at Spion Kop I was treated as a daughter by Lynette and Raymond, even being invited to attend their daughters wedding that took place at the lodge itself. Raymond was what can only be described as a gentleman during our whole visit and Lynette, the second mum that everyone longs for. Hester and Allister were so extremely helpful and Ashleigh and Sarah where always around to brighten our day with their adorable daughter Jemimah. Nothing was ever too much trouble.

All in all my stay at Spion Kop was amazing and leaving was extremely emotional. The Heron family did so much for both myself and the other volunteers in our time spent there and we owe them a great deal. For anybody wanting a true African experience with trustworthy, welcoming hosts that provide an idealic retreat Spion Kop should be you number 1 choice. Thank you Lynette, Raymond, Hester, Allister, Ashleigh, Sarah and all the Heron's for welcoming me into your family and ensuring that I had the experience of a life time! Xxxx

I arrived at Spion Kop Lodge to a warm greeting from Hester, Alistair and Lynette. ( Raymond was on the battlefield ) After a quick cup of tea it was off to the Spion Kop game reserve across the road with Alistair in their open Safari vehicle. Alistair was spotting animals that appeared magically once he had pointed them out to me ! In a short space of time we had seen Giraffe, Eland, Red Hartebeest, Zebra , Warthog, Impala..... Sundowners on a hill overlooking the Spionkop dam with the Drakensberg mountains in the background was awesome.

That evening we retired to the cozy bar with memorabilia that will keep your interest for hours ! Accommodation excellent, all round kudos to the team at Spion Kop Lodge. " I'll be back " ! Willem Swanepoel

Our stay was far too short, Alastair and Hester are great hosts and the staff are friendly and helpful. Alistair took us on a Battlefields tour, which was fascinating, with majestic vistas. A birders paradise! Alistair booked us a horse ride at the nearby Game Reserve, which was amazing as we saw a Rhino and Giraffe family, as well as many buck, zebra and warthogs. The horses were matched to your ability, which was great, because I got the one that sleep-walked the whole way. Beds are super comfortable and kitchen well equipped, showers and bath were great.

Room Tip: We stayed in the self-catering cabin.

self catering chalets need a bit of tarting up, a bit of interior decorating, just a few touches would do it, a full on fire place would be great with a supply of wood. dont leave all the cleaning equipment for the unit on the verandah

We were warmly met by Hester and Alastair on our arrival for the Tour of the Battlefields. Raymond brought everything to 'life' with his stories of the battles, which made our History clearer than when learning it at school a long time ago. To be on the exact spot where the battle took place was incredible. We returned to the lodge and enjoyed a light lunch before leaving. As we were not staying at Spion Kop Lodge, we cannot comment on the accommodation but liked the look of the whole set up. Unfortunately, we did not meet Lynette although we had been in touch via email and she was very helpful. We would recommend Spion Kop Lodge to any one. Our best wishes to all. Kind regards, Don and Jenny, PMB

Another visit to Spion Kop Lodge - that in itself is a very good indicator. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the food simple but good. The welcome and hospitality were once again first class. And we even managed a couple of minutes of Liverpool derby match v Everton. The highlight as always though was a fascinating morning with Raymond Heron on the Kop. Wonderfully interesting and entertaining. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Next time Ladysmith as well. Thanks Raymond and keep up the great work. And yes this is also a must for Liverpool fans!!

Surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Drakensberg and Free State Mountains. Spion Kop Lodge is the ideal place from where to explore the battlefields, set on an echo farm in Kwazulu-Natal. General Buller’s headquarters during the relief of the Ladysmith campaign, Mount Alice, is located on the farm. The beautifully restored, 8 bedroomed colonial-style farmhouse, is set in tranquil, secure grounds with superb views. Added to this there are two cottages, offering self-catering accommodation in an out-of-Africa setting. There is a library with an excellent collection of historical books, a dining room, cozy pub and a swimming pool. The owner and registered guide, Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), guides guests to the many historic Battlefield sites, as does his son Alastair.
