“Secret Lake District”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Arnside is just to the South of the Lake District. Cars rush off the M6 at J35A missing this quiet corner that is perfect for exploration on foot or bike. The hotel is ideally suited leaving the car in the car park, and walking straight out onto the fells. Tony and Jay are welcoming hosts and our room was spacious and bathroom clean. The breakfast was great featuring local bacon, black pudding and sausage. Use the O/S map to find the way up Arnside Knott for fantastic views over the Kent estuary. And then catch the train (hourly service) to Grange and walk to Cartmel. Perfect!

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room overlooking the sea.

Returned to Fighting Cocks after several years and changes in management. The present owners are very keen to up the prestige of the place and really try hard. A plaque on the wall is testament to their efforts in winning Channel 4s 4 in a bed competition. There is now an appointed manager who works alongside the owners who we found always accessible.
Key strengths are the location, views, and value for money compared with some other Arnside B&Bs.
Only real gripe was their was evidence of water ingress on the wall of the delux room we were allocated and we detected a slight musty smell. However, as we were only staying one night we didn't let this detract from what was an enjoyable stay. We will certainly return.

We booked 3 rooms last March for a nearby wedding in August . We stayed 2 nights and were all delighted with the location and standard. The views were stunning and the rooms well appointed and comfortable. The hosts Tony and Jeanette couldn't have been more helpful and delightful. Nothing was too much trouble, throughout the whole weekend, and they and their staff helped create a lovely ambience throughout. We had a meal Friday night which was enjoyable and tasty and the breakfasts included everything that you would expect.
If staying in Arnside I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody.

Room Tip: Overlook the Estuary and Viaduct

We stayed overnight at this hotel during a trip to the Lake District and I'm so glad I chose this hotel. The view from our room was stunning and binoculars were supplied so that we could enjoy it even more. Our room was lovely, the bed very comfortable and the shower was nice and powerful. We had a bar meal which was tasty and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was superb - with a huge choice - something for everyone. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and I would really look forward to going back. Arnside is well worth a visit as it is in such a scenic location.

Room Tip: Ask for the bridal suite!

Called in this afternoon for a drink with our two year old and five year old children having spent the day walking in Arnside. The hosts and their staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful, particularly towards the children who were delighted to be given lollipops to enjoy. The children loved playing in the outdoor play area, allowing us to sit, relax and enjoy the stunning views across the bay. The "facilities" were clean and user friendly, which is important to a Mum of small children. Great value for money and a lovely place to find. We will be back another day and can highly recommend this pub to all.

I was not aware that I had family in Arnside but after our 3day stay at Ye Old Fighting Cocks, I feel that I now have that relationship! Tony and Jeanette are the most welcoming hosts in any establishment we have stayed in and that's quite a lot. After weeks of building work on our house we needed a break and this place was JUST right. Arnside itself is a lovely place with wonderful views from the hotel and some very pleasant walks without having to put too much effort into it. Breakfast is whatever you want and however you want it catering for 'british fry-up's' or continental, some people moan about having to make their own toast...so what...that way you can have it to your liking. The accomodation is very nice and even though we had the 'Sandside' room at the side of the hotel, we still had lovely views of the hills and the estuary but if you're lucky to get a front hotel room then they have spectacular views. Tony's local knowledge (although he and Jeanertte have only been there a few months) is very good and helpful and he recommended a lovely day out by rail to Ulverston then dropping off in Grange on the way back. Unfortunately the cooked food is not available from 6.30p.m. but their are plenty of alternatives and because this couple work so hard, they deserve some time off. During our 3 days there we saw only one miserable face and that was the hotel cat who'd just had 'the chop op.'
If you're thinking about where to stay in Arnside then this is the place just make sure there's a room for us again in a few weeks time as we are certainly going back....Thanks Tony and Jeanette..(hope you like your new 4x4)
