Kamena Lodge
Reviewed August 5, 2012

Kamena Lodge is situated in a small village about 15 mnis by car from Split. It is run by an English couple, Ann & Glynn who are genial hosts making you feel like friends. The village is charming and untouched by the usual tourist trappings.

Kamena is great place to hang out for a few days and Ann & Glynn will provide a comfortable stay with lots of useful tips on things to do in the area. My advice: take Glynn's tour to the Krka river gorge. You won't be disappointed.

Initially was looking for a place in Split to lay low for two days and two nights waiting for my party to arrive before travelling the interior. Was purely looking to stay in the centre of Split but I am glad I decided to book at Kamena. First of the all the lodge is extremely laid back and has everything and above of what you as a single traveller (or backpacker, group, family, couple) can look for. Mostly due to the hospitality of the hosts and their local knowledge providing me with tips and tricks of the surroundings and to Croatia in general. Glynn and Ann are a couple from the UK have been living in Croatia for 8 years and will cater to all your needs or leave alone if you wish so. After kindly inquiring they organised a barbecue for everyone staying in the lodge. FREE wifi, cold beers, a fantastic pool, deckchairs, sunbeds, air mattresses in the water where all at hand. Given the temperatures where over 30 I decided to explore Split by night and sit at the pool cool down reading books during the day. Split can easily be explored in 2 x 3 hours or so max. you will have seen it all. Easy -and I mean very easy- connection to town, if you don't want Glynn to drive you down on set times, just take the bus (once every hour or so) 20 minutes will get you from the lodge's door to the central bus station add 10 minutes and you are bang on at the waterfront. Added bonus are the laid back village with local bar, bakery and restaurant plus great views (day AND night) of split as the village is located in the hills away from Split. Wow, how glad I was not having stayed in the stony, hot, expensive, wore down hostels or apartments down town but at the lodge instead! Go check it out you will not regret it!

Room Tip: I stayed in the private double which was cool and came with shutters and fan, beds are good.

We would highly recommend Kamena Lodge! We had an amazing holiday in Split and a major part of that was down to Kamena Lodge and especially Glynn and Ann who are excellent hosts. They make the Lodge feel like a home away from home and they provided us with a lot of information on what to do and where to go in Split and the surrounding areas.
Some reviewers have mentioned the location of Kamena Lodge as a negative, however we have to disagree as we thought the location of Kamena Lodge was a positive! The village that the Lodge is located in is traditional and provides a side to Split that you wouldn't necessarily get to see if you were in accommodation in the middle of the city. Furthermore, the bus links and Kamena Lodge's daily shuttle at 10am and 5pm make it very easy to get to and from the city centre to the Lodge quickly and without hassle, meaning that you can decide when you want to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle or relaxing in the quiet village by the pool with a beer :)

Extra +'s - The pool!, Airport transfers for minimal charge, delicious food for minimal charge, clean rooms with attached bathrooms, internet (free wifi),and many more.

We stayed here towards the end of our travels round Croatia and what a find! It was the perfect way to end a holiday. The hosts were fantastic and incredibly accommodating and welcoming. Of an evening we would play monopoly, drink wine, play darts and have delicious food including the Croatian Peka dish.

The accommodation was immaculately presented and the standards were very high. Having a hostel that had a pool area was an added bonus and was certainly well utilised.

Could not recommend Kamena lodge more - Glynne and Ann really were the best and made our stay.

We are in the process of booking our next holiday and can only hope that we find a place as fantastic as the Kamena Lodge! We still talk about what a great holiday we had in Croatia and this lodge definitely made our experience a memorable one. Ann and Glynn are such welcoming, friendly and fun hosts! They are there to help you with anything you need and provide transport to various locations. The BBQ Glynn does is fabulous! The pool was a great way to cool off and the communal areas offered enough space to chill out. It really is a unique place that offers a bit of everything! It is a perfect place to meet other travelers, offers enough space to accommodate a family and is a great place to sit back with a drink and relax! It is hard to find a place that has as many good reviews as the Kamena Lodge and they are all true!

All the amazing reviews already written before me say it all. I had found Kamena Lodge on the internet and initially wasn't sure because I thought I wanted to be right in town. I am so pleased I decided to stay at Kamena Lodge. I called them from the bus on the way into town from the airport (33kn) and luckily there was a room free. I was picked up from the bus station (free of charge) and taken up the hill to the gorgeous traditional home of Ann and Glynn. I spent the first day lounging by the pool which was wonderful and relaxing. That evening, and every evening, as other guests came back from their days out, we all sat around the outdoor dining table swapping stories whilst eating our dinner or playing games. The atmosphere was perfect. I was a single female traveller who had never stayed in a hostel (although this isn't really a hostel) nor travelled alone. I immediately felt at home, safe and really enjoyed my stay there. So much so I stayed 2 extra nights. The fact that they are a little way out of town is actually really nice. You can get picked up from town at 5pm (or catch the bus later on for 11kn), cook your own dinner or head up the road to the cheap and tasty pizza restaurant (48kn for pizza and a beer), and then chill in one of the several communal areas (outdoor dining area, pool area, tv/lounge room). There is free internet and wifi and a book swap. There is an ipod dock in the kitchen/dining area which can be taken up to the pool area if you want. The rooms are spotless and most have their own bathroom. There are fans in the rooms for when it gets too hot at night in summer. The twin room was 400kn per night and the double room with a shared bathroom 200kn per night. There is also a 4 bed dorm with bathroom and doubles with bathroom. You can have breakfast there for 35kn but I bought some food from the small grocery store up the road so not sure what this entailed. There is also a bakery 5 mins away. They will, upon request, cook a bbq or traditional peka meal for 100kn per person (good value for money as it is delicious and you get a couple of glasses of wine to wash it down). I got a drop off to the airport which took about 25 mins for 80kn. Overall a welcoming, homely, clean, affordable place to chill out and base yourself for the days of exploring Split and the surrounding areas.

We had a fantastic stay at Kamena Lodge where Glynn and Ann look after all their guests with tremendous hospitality. Could not speak more highly of our experience and would highly recommend to anyone interested in visiting the beautiful city of Split. The lodge is easily accessible through local buses or Glynn's reliable drop offs / pick ups and all information and excursions are available through Glynn and Ann. We visited the waterfalls and had a wonderful day due to Glynn's extensive knowledge of the area and his cheeky little shortcuts which enabled us to have a special experience! The BBq's are delicious and a good way to socialise with other staying guests. They are also excellent value after travelling round Croatia and experiencing a number of restaurants. Breakfast also offers something for everyone at a very reasonable price. The Villa felt like home throughout our stay and you can use kitchen facilities if you purchase your own food from the bakery and really cheap shop which are very close by. We were travelling with our 3 year old daughter and she had a wonderful time interacting with the hosts and other guests. The pool is great and their assistance when visiting the football match was invaluable. These are very special people.
Will visit in the future as Glynn and Ann's knowledge of Croatia is second to none and nothing is too much trouble. We feel we have made good friends.
