on our way to Caen, in Normandy France we decided to leave the main road and head for the beaches. From Caen we took the road D17 direction Ouistreham and followed road D514 direction Ouistreham to St Aubin-sur-mer. A most charming and beautiful little village on the Normandy coast.
As we were travelling mid-week it was easy to book a room and dinner on the spot. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly.
We booked a special offer for the room including breakfast and dinner, in total we paid 95 euro per person per night. That is relatively cheap once you realise that the restaurant of the hotel is serving excuisite food. Breakfast can be ordered in the privacy of your own room. There is a big terrace in front of the hotel on the promenade that is sheltered from the wind and is most enjoyable for afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks.
Our room was a suite, with two bedrooms with TV, a spacious bathroom and separate toilet. All very clean and well maintained. The view from our room was amazing; overlooking the beach and the sea. Since there's no traffic in front of the hotel the tranquility and peaceful surroundings struck us the most.
The restaurant is excellent and a delight for discerning travellerers who appreciate good local food of high quality. The Chef takes pride in serving local specialities like plateau fruits-de-mer with local oysters from St Vaast, other shellfish, muscles and shrimps. A must for seafoodlovers. Or try the 'tripes de Caen', or tarte de pommes with Calvados. Service was most friendly and very attentive to every wish.
Only minor point were the prices of the wines and other drinks on the menu. Very expensive and extra to the bill. But the total of your consumptions depends on yourself, of course...
in the morning we walked around the village, very charming and we discovered a life of luxury and memorial buildings behind the dyke. As well as turn-of-the-century villas and charming streets. This village looks like a filmset, so authentic and still untouched by modern tourism.
We were very impressed by our stay at 'le clos normand' and we will be back. If only for the superb oysters and lobster!!
"Le Clos Normand" is highly recommended for a short stay especially for foodlovers and families with little children who enjoy the sea and the beaches and the French good life.
