Lovely setting and grounds. Odviousley this time of year evening meals were served inside the restaurant was quiet but still a good atmosphere. A comprehensive menu we opted for a selection of starters followed by the duck and the cassoulette which were excellent. We followed this with various sweets, the cheese board was exceptional. All washed down with two bottles of red wine selected from a large wine list. A very enjoyable french dinner and i would definately reccomend a visit.

Good atmosphere, great food, good service in a really pleasant room. We arrived as a group of eight having booked an hour earlier. Most of the clients were French, but no sense of exclusion, indeed the opposite.

Booked a table and had a steak which was at least 50% gristle and fat. The staff seemed to think this normal. Setting and grounds were lovely, service quick. Let down by the quality of the food

Alet-les-Bains is in a great location, on the river Aude, in the South of France. This Hostellerie, restaurant and hotel is in the best spot of town; Big palatial park with beautiful, big old trees. Casual dining, outdoors weather permitting, and indoors in the ancient space of the palace. Very attentive service and very reasonable prices. Unfortunately the food is average, but good French food.

First of all, I should say that as a family of 5 we spent €150 for a three course meal with drinks and coffee, so be warned - this place is anything but cheap. However, if you're looking for a leisurely Sunday lunch of typical French cuisine in a lovely outdoor setting, done to a high standard using locally sourced ingredients then I can't recommend l'Eveché highly enough.
Having 2 under-12s in our group we ordered 2 set menus for kids (€11 each), then the rest of us chose from the €31 menu gastronomique. The kids' starter seemed unpromising ("a dish of raw vegetables" sounds less than appealing) but included a delicious salad of tomatoes in olive oil and herbs, an onion dish similar to kachumber but tangier and slightly sweet - and as a bonus there were some huge chunks of watermelon and charentais melon which the kids loved. Their main course was chicken with ceps in a lovely sauce with some chunky, salty chips, while for dessert there was a good selection of ice creams for which they could choose any combination of flavours they wanted. Portions were good in that they ate everything but the bones without feeling stuffed afterwards.
The grown-up menu was somewhat overpriced and perhaps should include cheese as well as a dessert, rather than it being a dessert option. We could have had a €19 menu but this offered far less choice and was almost identical to the kids' menu, so this was the next option up the price ladder. We all three plumped for the platter of assorted charcuterie and vegetables and were served an amazing variety of delicious and beautiful-looking food. Highlights were a salad of tomatoes and courgettes, a chunky farmhouse-style chicken-liver paté, and an assortment of cured pork and duck meats. There was also what can only have been a local version of pork scratchings, using salted and cured duck skin, which was very tasty. For main courses my wife enjoyed a whole trout meuniere with new potatoes and salad which she really enjoyed, while my son and I had a confit duck leg each with more of those chips, grilled tomatoes and salad. This was spectacularly good, the duck skin beautifully crispy and salty with the meat plump and fatty underneath. For dessert, my son and I had a deliciously light mille-feuille with a hint of marsala (maybe Muscat de Rivesaltes?) in the crème patissière, while my wife had a very good walnut tart with a hint of Armagnac. A good stiff jolt of coffee finished the meal off in perfect style.
Drinks - there was a good selection of softs for the kids (Sprite, 7Up, Cola and Orangina as you'd expect), while the wine list had a good variety with an emphasis on the regional AOCs of Languedoc: Fitou, Minervois, Côtes du Roussillon and of course Corbières. For our apéro the grown-ups had a glass of the local fizz, Blanquette de Limoux, which was dry and zesty with a delicious hint of lemon. We also took a bottle of 2010 Corbières which was lusciously fruity and perfect with the duck, perhaps less so with the trout - but that meant more for me!!
All in all, this was a great meal experience and despite the hefty price tag we would go back again and again. Would perhaps only improve this restaurant by having an additional set menu at say €25, but whatever menu you choose the food will be fantastic.
