“Lovely”
Reviewed January 25, 2014 via mobile

My husband and i stayed here for 2 nights during our honeymoon road trip. Our room was really lovely, newly decorated and we had a balcony that over looked the sea. The food in the restaurant was nice but maybe need more staff as there are a lot of tables(the staff were also lovely). The Panty Bar was an eye opener and the atmosphere was great-tiny little bar with ladies underwear on the ceiling!! Paternoster is a peaceful fishing village and the colourful boats on the beach are a sight to see. Will def come back.

We visited the restaurant for a meal of fishcakes with rice.
It tasted strange, and was quite unpleasant. The burger was also plain and unmemorable.
To top it off, we had the worst service from a waitor who would rather point at the menu than speak, appears without a word, no greeting or smile, forgets to bring the round of drinks, does not check up on us at all.
We will not be back. There is not one thing that salvages this visit.

Hotel improved on decor, but not on service. Rooms are large and comfortable. Large and cosy. Beware on main road, therefore you get pestered by children and read the warning about safety. Also be beware, breakfast is not included - except of one item. Only Hotel in South Africa, where you have to pay for breakfast extras.

Sometimes it is simply great if things don't change too much over time. Mentioned the hotel elsewhere but thought worth sharing this note for visitors (especially international ones!). In the politically turbulent 1980s, as a student, first visited Paternoster, pretty much dead-poor. Owner Johan Carossini gave us accommodation in a caravan parked next to the hotel, it cost practically nothing. I think the hotel was the only establishment offering accommodation at the time. We ordered cheap drinks from the bar, and Johan invited us in one cold night for food made for the family, BBQ fish which I don't believe we ever paid for. On checking out, no one had kept a tab of our expenses, and we had to construct our own bill (we did with the best accuracy that drinking students are capable of). The tiny bar was particularly memorable for the lingerie donated by its female clientele, which still hangs dusty from the ceiling, now a veritable installation.

Fast forward: Paternoster now is a trendy small fisherman's village with many more options ranging from boutique to plain (the Paternoster Hotel fits into the latter), whether for food or accommodation. I have never stayed in the hotel so cant comment - have stayed at Abalone House, which is exclusive and quite exquisite. I think the hotel's rooms would be, well, questionable, but that depends on your standards.

Took some very well traveled German guests for lunch on 31 Dec last year for a crayfish lunch at the hotel restaurant. It was predictably chaotic, service was practically non-existent (although they tried) and the waiters were very clear about how long food would take. Kitchen stressed to the extreme.

But: our crayfish was perfectly cooked and worth the wait. It is nothing more than a simple plate of food, except the main ingredient is normally an expensive delicacy (try this in HKG, LON, NYC. And it was fresh from the sea). Two crayfish tails per person cost ZAR 165 (make that $10 US; UKL 11 at current exchange rates). And you will pay $7 for a perfectly quaffable bottle of local wine. The season for crayfish fishing was open. I bought 36 sea-fresh crayfish tails (smallish but legal) for less than a Dollar per piece, cooked for a gathering on 1 January.

Don't expect much from this establishment, and you will have a fantastic time. Remember to visit the pub. Cant speak for the rest of the menu.

I am on my own in Paternoster and of course looking for the famous seafood everyone talks about in this town. My Boutique 5 star guest house had nothing, so I had to drive to this little throwback for a delicious meal and wonderful true South African service.
Thank you for proving that there is delicious food in this town. Honest and well priced.

We had some nice fish and chips here. The waitress was honest and told us what was good and bad (ie what fish was tough and dry) Quite refreshing in this day and age. Service is however fairly average. The most interesting part was watching all the local activities / bargaining on the other side of the road from our table. Areal local experience!

This is a great place to have a meal and watch the world go by on the main road of this little seaside town:) The adjoining bar is buzzing...inside the hotel there's lots of art to admire as well as a pretty shell shop which sells jewellery and decorative stuff made from shells.
