In December 2012 upon visiting the West coast town of Paternoster in the Western Cape we came across a house on the beach. The setting was absolutely stunning. We enquired and booked the house for a weekend in March 2013. Upon booking we were informed that a private flat-let adjacent to the house was rented out to someone else. Under the impression that a R 4000.00 per day (which we now understand is the highest rental in the village) house will be value for money we went ahead and paid for the house for 2 families and 5 children. Upon arriving and to our utter dismay we noticed that the flat was actually part of the property and was occupied by 2 people and two dogs. As animal lovers we do tolerate dogs, but two barking and aggressive little dogs walking into your holiday house when you have toddlers are unacceptable and downright irresponsible of the owner. The people that rented the flat locked the front entrance of the house and as a result we had to walk around the house to get to our cars. There is a fantastic unspoilt beach in front of the house and a municipality sign that says no dogs are allowed on the beach. Obviously this did not detract the flat occupiers from walking their dogs on the beach. What amazed us was the fact that the owners rent out a flat on the beach to 2 people and 2 dogs when they very well know that the Municipality does not allow this. On the second night their was no gas to braai with. For some reason the DSTV in the house run from the same decoder as the flat and the channels were changed constantly by the flat owners forcing us to watch their rather boring Television programmes. We complained with the owner and she then offered a complimentary weekend and in fact emailed us to choose a weekend. The morning we left we called the the owner Toni Shina to ask what we should do with the keys, she told us that the housekeeper was on her way and that we could leave the key in the door, we then left. The next day when we confirmed the complimentary weekend we received the following response:
"After consultation with my husband and Housekeeper, I am unable to offer you a complimentary weekend. You left my home open and vulnerable and you did not respect my home.
Somehow we were not surprised at all by the retraction of the offer. On the contrary we were indeed very surprised by the initial offer given the ridiculous set-up we experienced over the weekend. It almost look as if the owner run the house as a backpacker set-up, trying to cramp as many people as possible into the house and flat, thereby gaining maximum return.
