My husband is allergic to seafood and the kitchen was very considerate and cleaned their utensils and surfaces when preparing our food! The hake fish cakes and angelfish bobotie starters were fantastic, but the panfried angelfish main stole the show! Fantastic!

The atmosphere and food here are fantastic but beware the tables on the open balcony on a cold night (blankets are made available!) to those that require them. Fantastic meat and seafood dishes served by attentive staff. Will return....

Gaaitjie is the Afrikaans word for little hole or getaway was an accidental discovery in Paternoster. During the Namastay yoga retreat in Paternoster a guest recommended Gaaitjie as her favourite eatery in Paternoster. Her recommendation made me curious as I had often visited Paternoster, but never ate at Gaaitjie. Set right next to a sunset beach with lovely veranda seating overlooking the ocean and some tables available inside aswell. Booking is essential, but we were very lucky in that the excellent waitress helped us anyway. The service was above average, friendly and excellent recommendations from our waitress. The snoek starter blew me away and rest of the courses was equally impressive. A small veranda, facing the parking area is available for smokers. If you are a couple do not order the same dishes and rather share each dish for more variety. A nice touch is to take a walk after or in between courses along the beach. The beach stretches for miles and is beautiful.

The food is wonderful - I highly recommend the mussel starter! Prices are charged at a set rate for 2 or 3 courses, not per dish and it's good value for the excellent quality.

Our second choice (noisy oyster was closed) proved to be a gastronimic delight in a spectacular location.
I started with Brandade smoked snoek - an explosion of flavours . Our mains were pork belly and tuna. Both delicious - my tuna especially with it's malay flavours . Dessert was warm soetkoekies and a dessert wine fm Klawer. Perfect.
Service was excellent.
Two comments though...we had specifically booked a patio table but were told when confirming that due to the weather conditions the patio was closed. This meant we were relegated to the furthermost corner table in the small dining area at the back of the building...no seaview . My suggestion would be that if weather conditions effect the table bookings...patio reservations get preference in the seafacing dining room and bookings are rearranged from there.
Secondly...having just been offered illegal crayfish in town, our tastebuds were craving ... it would have been nice to see more local produce from the sea on the menu....but, this being said, our meal was delicious!!!!
