My sister stayed at Abalone House in December 2011. She raved so much that when the first opportunity came to stay there - albeit it nearly a year later - I grabbed it.
My friend and I went for just two nights. Had never visited Paternoster before and what a lovely little pretty unspoilt fishing village it is, with two fab galleries, a few little shops, some great restaurants and little else.
Abalone House was a treat. Pretty camp in decor, with large Tretchikoffs (prints?) all over, the staff was friendly and the food EXCEPTIONAL! Deon, formerly a lecturer from a hotel school in Cape Town, is the new chef and the memory of the crayfish - in lime, coriander and ginger and a little butter - will linger forever.
Breakfasts too, were great and although the high tea - included in the accomodation price - did not include sandwiches, it was delicious too, with the most stunning homemade iced teas.
I hope to be back. And will certainly prioritise it for when I want a restful, relaxing break with outstanding food. And good alcohol too. Still trying to locate a store with the great brandy we had in the bar at Abalone House.

We were very impressed at the hospitality and friendlyness of the people at Paternoster! We had a wonderful experience at the view from every room in the cottage! The food we had at Abalone House the evening we got there was amazing and the food was of high quality! The fireplace and the paintings was something to see. The Cottages are close to the Ocean and the view is amazing! The rooms are very clean and well furnished. We were visiting from Canada and hope to be back again!
Thanks to all the staff and to Johan and Stef and all the staff for the wonderfull experience, also thank you to Kevin for making us feel at home!

We stayed there last week and had an absolute wonderful stay for two nights.
We usually do not write comments here but this place is absolut worth it.
The team really went some extra miles for us, particularly to make Petra's birthday an unforgettable day and it turned out fantastic. Deon, the Chef, prepared a birthday cake that was just yummy (thanks again for that, Deon) and Kevin, Ops Mgr, really deserves the gold medal this year. Nothing was impossible for him to do - and always in a very good mood and smiling. Kevin, simply stay the way you are!
We had High Tea (it is compilmentary) upstairs on the terrace with stunning views of the beach and the ocean and and and....
No more words, just get there and enjoy yourselves.
Petra & Wolfgang

Room Tip: book a room upstairs if available - stunning views.

When does a guest house become a hotel and what is the difference? I am not sure, but what I do know is that this guest house is far better than most of the hotels I have ever stayed in and way better than any other guest house I have visited.
Set in the gloriously unspoilt fishing village of Paternoster, Abalone House cared for and about us from the very moment we wearily walked through the door. Our room was spacious, had every conceivable gadget that you could need and the underfloor heating in the bathroom was very welcome, even in the warm spring. The coffee in the bedroom (a pod gizmo) was the icing on the cake!
The food was very good. We had not planned to eat in every night but had long days out exploring the lovely surroundings and so ended up in the restaurant. It was not busy which probably explains why the same food (steak, fish and a vegetarian option) was the same each night, however it was prepared very differently each time and was delicious. My only disappointment was that the red wine we had the first night was not available on the second night but this was a small price to pay, Breakfast was out of this world and set us up well for the day.All members of staff were friendly and helpful.
I have only one quibble with Abalone House and that is the music played in bar/breakfast/dining room. It was nice but there was only apparently one CD and I was fed up with all of the songs in a very short time!

Had read some recent mixed reviews on here so was slightly nervous before arrival, but need not have been. Paternoster is beautiful - empty beaches bathed in gorgeous sunshine, probably not a lot going on though!
We arrived at Abalone early afternoon and were greeted by individually made his & hers cocktails both with plastic baby ducks floating in them! Ducks are a theme here, from the real ones in the garden to the enormous plastic ones by the bath.
Our room (Number 8) upstairs had a large bathroom with separate bath/shower, a private terrace with sunloungers, a short walk to the rooftop jacuzzi and the most amazing views possible. It was beautifully decorated with a massive comfy bed. One of the nicest rooms I've ever had.
Predinner drinks were served by the open fire, which was welcome in the spring evenings. A short menu but of very high quality food - the prawn salad was much more than that and the beef was incredibly tender. The food was amazingly well cooked and presented. Sadly we didn't have room for dessert.
Food & wine are not cheap by ZA standards, but very good by UK!
This is an absolute gem and possibly on a par with Winvian in Connecticut USA, which is saying something!

Room Tip: We had a sneek peak around and if Room 8 is free ask for that!!

The reason we chose Abalone House for this special birthday weekend was because it was the only 5 star establishment. We have stayed in other accommodation in Paternoster before which was not 5 star but was certainly better as well as delivering on what was advertised. This establishment does their trip advisior award no justice. The restaurant setting is stunning but totally let down by the quality of the cuisine. This remained abismal throughout our stay. While every restaurant offered the freshest fish caught locally that day, Abalones catch of the day was surprisingly, hake. This was not only their best menu offering but easily trumped by the many unpretensious establishments surrounding us. At breakfast "chef" serves you her version of your order regardless of your repeated requests. Though there were some small thoughtful offerings recieved during our stay, expected of a 5 star establishment but by and large Abalone totally missed the mark on all the major areas. Service, effective communication and the comfort of their guests are not up to standard. The only people who seem to be happy with Abalone's service is the day manager and his staff and they prefer to defensive.

There are no amenities like shower caps, cotton wool or earbuds in the bathroom, when phoning to reception to request a shower cap the phone went unanswered. A feather pillow, although available, took 5 requests to be delivered to the room. As far as privacy is concerned, you can hear everything your neighbors do and I mean everything, We were overcharged by 12 tots on the bill.

The owners who live out of town clearly need to spend more time at their "5" star establishment.
