La Baleine Paternoster
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 22, 2014

La Baleine is situated almost on the beach with a well-maintained pathway on to the sands and with spectacular views. The unit is spacious, well equipped and very comfortable. It was so lovely we only ate at a restaurant once in our 3 night stay, preferring to sit quietly on the patio overlooking the sea. we loved the peace and tranquillity and miles of unspoilt beach to walk along. The company of 2 cats made us feel completely at home. It seems they have adopted the self-catering units and clearly find the resident cat lovers at any one time. When the maintenance team started working on the wrong roof and water poured into the bedroom, Berthram the housekeeping manager arrived quickly and ensured clean, dry bedding for us. My only suggestion for improvement would be bigger, fluffier bath towels, please. We certainly hope to return to explore more of this unspoilt coast.

We had the most amazing experience. Our only issue is that we wish we could have stayed for longer! We were greeted by awesome reception staff, and driven to the self-catering accommodation, whilst having the various restaurants and attractions getting pointed out to us. The unit was tastefully furnished with the finest appliances and linen, lovely furniture (comfy couch and great outdoor seating to watch the waves) The bathroom, with shower and lovely bath (perfect for unwinding whilst sipping a glass of wine!) is a decent size and has a separate loo.

We were given a super information back, and map of the area, which really helped us because we didn't have a clue on where to go and what to eat. We had a lovely meal at Voorstrandt Restaurant, which was right on the beach (always book in advance as restaurants get incredibly full- we were lucky they still had one table left for us).

When we eventually got to bed, after tearing ourselves away from the amazing views, we were overwhelmed with comfort. The entire experience was absolutely heavenly and we could not have asked for anything more.

Room Tip: Definitely book direct as you will get the best rates, and try to get a restaurant booking in advanc...

Looking for some quiet time, beautiful views, fitted with all you may need, within minutes from the busy "main road" of Paternoster? La Baleine is the place for you. However, don't worry the fresh, illegal crayfish will still be brought to your doorstep, as well as huge fresh black mussels. The only negative feedback, like you'll find at most self catering places, proper maintenance lacks. Owners of these establishments should try to book themselves in from time to time to experience the good and the bad your guests do.

A wonderful experience. Situated on the headland overlooking the bay with 180 degree views I don't think I have stayed at a lovelier place. Self catering with a full kitchen and braai, gas fireplace, Wi-Fi and washing machine (handy when travelling). The accommodation whilst not luxurious is very comfortable, spotlessly clean and homey. Nigh time patrols by security officers gave extra peace of mind. In the afternoon some fishermen go door to door selling mussels and crayfish. Barter for the best price. Got some lovely crays which we cooked on the braai. Staff were great.

We stayed at Oranje, a neat modern unit for couples only. Loved the little kitchen and living area- neat, modern and very clean. The toilet is separate but the bath and basin is in the bedroom. There is no shower- only a handheld which did not please the husband! There is a step between the bed and the doorway which can be very dangerous for the elderly, pregnant or just clumsy like me!

Great view with all the amenities. Right on the beach. Beautiful sunrise. Gas fireplace and underfloor heating. Just right for a spring evening. Would go here again kids loved it. Right of the beach with sand and sea shells. Needs a little TLC - but not much.

We stayed in the Buuren A unit. The units are well equipped (flat-screen TV, leather couch, dishwasher, safe etc), The decor has a luxurious feel to it and everything was very clean and tidy. We had our own porch with great views over the bay (even though we had units in front of us they are relatively low so do not block your view). The units are also located in a quiet cul-de-sac.The beach is just 2 minutes walk away.

However this experience was spoiled by poor service. We checked in for 6 nights from Saturday to Friday. On the Monday morning our shower door detached from its railings. We informed the office and they said the maintenance team is very busy, so unlikely they can help us on Monday - most likely on Tuesday. In the meantime we had to deal with a heavy shower door, having to "balance" it in the opening to prevent wetting the whole bathroom. This was a big safety risk. Tuesday came and went as well as Wednesday. Thursday morning I called again. The lady was very surprised to hear the door was not fixed and said she would follow up and call me back immediately. This never happened - we left on the Friday with the door still not fixed and no call from the office.

One or 2 other smaller service related issues bothered us. The directions we received to the offices was for the "during hours" office. The "after hours" office was located elsewhere which we struggled to find. They were aware that we would check in on a Saturday.

During check-in at the office, certain restaurants were recommended - however one of the restaurants (Blikkies Pizzeria) were actually closed for the whole winter (we discovered this when pitching up at the restaurant with pizza on our minds.

We also struggled with insufficient toilet paper - we asked the service ladies for more and they gave us one roll.

These are all "service" related issues. Mostly "small things", but has a lasting impression on a customer. Without these service issues we would have no doubts to strongly recommend La Balaeine, but we cannot do this based on our experience.
