This place was the closest to Heaven i've ever seen, it was just absolutely gorgeous! The view took my breath away, as we had dolphins who came to visit us,just outside our door playing in the water. The house or villa we stayed in was clean ,modern and safe,!!! I would recomend this 'little bit of heaven' to anyone and cant wait to return...............

We arrived to find our unit (Leerdam) in a filthy condition. Dust, sand and cobwebs throughout, mould in the showers. The kitchen had grease on the worktops and cooker, the crockery and cutlery was dirty and the waste bin contained remnants of rotting food. Outside the kitchen door we discovered a large open cardboard box full of putrid bin waste.
We immediately reported these matters to La Baleine management who were most apologetic. A couple of hours into our stay we consequently had four cleaners in our unit attempting to achieve what should have been done prior to our arrival.
In the meantime we were discovering several broken and defective items within the unit. These included a severely cracked and potentially dangerous vanity bowl to the second bedroom, a rusted kettle, blown veneer to the underside of both toilet seats, a broken kitchen unit door handle, a defective kitchen unit door and a vanity bowl in the main bedroom that would not hold water.
La Baleine management offered us a full refund arrogantly pointing out that they could easily re-let the accomodation. We reluctantly decided to stay as we were quite aware that in high season there would be no alternative accomodation available in Paternoster for our planned one week stay. On pressing La Baleine management paid us R1,000.00 (equivalent to 6% of their total fee) in compensation for the debacle.
As visitors from overseas our main source of information when choosing where to stay is from the internet, primarily the accomodation (La Baleine) website. We have found to our cost that the claims made by La Baleine of their website to provide 'Luxury accomodation' is very far from the truth.
Absolutely Atrocious!

Dear Guests

We are enormously shocked about your negative review and would like to put your feedback and perception of your stay in La Baleine in perspective.

As we are permanently striving to make or guests happy and to create a positive experience for them, we did not hesitate for a moment to immediately resend our cleaning and maintenance teams in your villa when we received your phone call. This also gave us the opportunity to evaluate your complaints and to show you our dedication.

We attended to all your complaints immediately and just to mention a few, the “broken” door handle was in fact loose and repaired immediately, the vanity which could not hold water, lost water slowly and we immediately replaced the seal, the “potential dangerous vanity” has a small indentation which most definitely isn’t “potentially dangerous” - we will not replace this vanity until we do a total revamp of La Baleine as it has no effect on our guest’s experience. We immediately brought you a new kettle despite the fact that we found the old one fine on inspection. You do not state it in your review that you also complained that the fridge was not cooling enough and we immediately brought you an additional one despite the existing fridge working perfectly.

Our policy is very much to offer to guests whom despite all our efforts we are unable to make happy, as last solution a refund. In the many years of La Baleine’s history you were until now, only the second guests we felt to do so. You declined this and without even looking for other accommodation decided to stay in our “absolutely atrocious accommodation”. Also after having offered you the opportunity of a full refund (on the condition of course that you leave), and your decision to stay (without even looking for other accommodation), it was not possible to offer you a refund. The R1 000 we paid back to you was a token for the discomfort you experienced because our cleaning and maintenance teams disturbed you on your first night.

We are not prepared to accept your statement of us being untruthful. We certainly have no interest to mislead travelers and have an excellent record of reviews (until yours) supported by many returning guests.

Kind regards
Simone & Deon

The apartment we stayed at was very nicely done, it had a patio with sea views and you could walk to the beach from the apartment. It was very comfy, and well decorated.

If you wanted to go for walks on the beach or walk for lunch to the Voorstrand it was perfect, but in terms of walking around other than that, it didn't seem like a great idea. Although there are other guest houses on the same side as this, it was definitely the fishing village side.

We spent 3 nights in Paternoster recently and stayed at La Baleine.
The accomodation is clean and spacious with a well appointed kitchen and room so no criticism there. Teh staff were friendly and attentive in handling my booking.

Be warned that La Baleine is on the end of Paternoster where a lot of fishing activity takes place - you also have to drive past the local school and shops which can make you feel like you are on the wrong end of town.

We recently stayed at Goedehoop - one of the 2 bedroomed houses owned by La Baleine. We previously stayed at Drommedaris, but as the patio is very high and without railings, we chose to stay at Goedehoop instead this time, as we have a 2 year old daughter. Both houses are right on the beach, with walkways down to the sand and beautiful gardens. The views are indescribable and you could just sit and stare all day. Our daughter loved the beach and it was such a short walk down - you could run back home if you forgot something. The house is very well kitted out, had all we needed. The only downside to Goedehoop is that the main bedroom does not have as nice a view as that of Drommedaris, but the living areas were nice and big and we had a huge patch of grass infront of our house, which our daughter enjoyed playing on. 2 restaurants in town come highly recommended - "The Noisy Oyster" is a bit pricey but something very different and the meals are very tasty. "Gaatjie" is just wonderful. You sit right on the beach and the food is delicious - plus best value for money meal we had on our 2 week trip. Bookings are essential at both restaurants. Been to La Baleine's accommodation 2 years in a row now, and we would definately like to return. The staff are very efficient and nothing is too much trouble to make sure your stay is memorable.

Room Tip: Drommedaris is definately the cream of the crop, but there are stairs inside and a high patio to bea...

My friend and I stayed for two nights in early-January '12 in the two-bedroomed 'De Reijger' cottage that was part of the 'La Baleine' collection in Paternoster. The location was ideal - almost right on the sand on a small hill looking back over to the beach and town of Paternoster. The sunset over the sea was therefore also awesome. It was also a few minutes' walk from the wonderful 'Gaaitjie' restaurant, located right on the sand on the town's beach, and highly recommended for either lunch or dinner. The cottage was new, with contemporary furniture and well appointed (especially the kitchen, which conveniently had a washing machine). The main bedroom (with open-plan en-suite bathroom) was lovely and afforded a stunning view of the sea. I would say the second bedroom was a little awkwardly furnished, with the two single beds squashed into their nooks a little too cosily (a simple rearrangement of the beds would probably do the trick). I would say that the second room is only really suitable for children in the current configuration. The service of the friendly reception and housekeeping staff was also exceptional. In addition to the sea-facing two-bedroomed cottages, 'La Baleine' also offers one-bedroom cottages just behind the two-bedroomed ones and they also looked well appointed. Overall, a highly recommended place to stay in Paternoster!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the two two-bedroomed cottages located on either end of the row - 'Goede Hoop'...

We fell in love with this place the minute we walked in: big windows with sea views, well equipped kitchen, beach at our fingertips and the kind of views dreams are made of. Deon (from Strandloper) organised everything for us, which was a tremendous help. We've stayed at various (self catering) places at Paternoster, and this is without a doubt our absolute favourite.
