Thinking of walking the Rheinsteig, Germany's new premium trail along the World Heritage Listed Rhein Valley? Well, we’d be disappointed if you didn’t love this place, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the path.
We have been coming to the Werner family’s lovely Gästehaus (B&B) for some years now and although we love exploring new places, we find ourselves returning here time after time to explore the wonderful vineyards, historic sites and of course the walking and cycling routes along the beautiful River Rhein.
Situated in idyllic woodland on the southern slopes of the Taunus Mountains, the house overlooks the river valley yet you are only 10 km away from Wiesbaden and perhaps 30 minutes drive from Mainz.
We have always been welcomed with such warm hospitality and enjoyed the most pleasant atmosphere with all the usual comforts. The rooms we have stayed in are immaculately presented, spotlessly clean and on the whole we think very good value too (it’s a three star rated Pension). Breakfast is delicious and typical of the region (much more than a standard continental). We’ve yet to meet non-German guests staying there and although the owners speak English much better than our Deutsch; you’ll need to brush up on your language skills if you need to say anything more than the usual pleasantries.
If you do find yourself in this area, be sure to try a dip in the thermal Spa at Schlangenbad, hire a bicycle at Bingen am Rhein, try the wines at the superb Kloster Eberbach and stroll through Rüdesheim. The August Wine Fest is great fun and in December, the Christmas Markets in the nearby towns are simply magical.
