The hotel is a centuries old country house which was fully renovated in 2002, a little château in a beautiful park, at the edge of Rühstädt village. Big comfortable rooms beautifully decorated, nice furniture, wonderful baths. They serve only breakfast and have a self-service bar with beers, wines and soft drinks, coffee, free fruit and cakes, accessible around the clock. Actually, most of the hotel is self-service: there’s no staff at the reception or the hotel after 17:00 (but you can call a telephone number, and are given a key to the castle), and there’s coin operated sauna, steam baths and solarium, plus exercise machines (free). The tiny village (population: 558) has two restaurants and a mini market; you won’t starve. WiFi internet in the rooms is free.
Rühstädt is right in the middle of the Elbe River biosphere reserve, the most sparsely populated region of Germany, which was designated as UNESCO World Heritage. The river is 1.5 km away, through fields and forest. The hotel is a fantastic starting point / base for cycling, running, hiking, bird watching … and very very quiet. Actually, the only sound you hear in the evening is of the white storks clattering their bills. Extraordinary.
