It was my second visit to this marvelous hotel.
The previous hotel staff was gone but new receptionists Laura and Carlos, plus manager Goncalo and the others are also great people.
Biggest news: 6 weeks ago a big storm caused a lot of damage to Santa Cruz and also this hotel.
They had to close the main pool down by the ocean as 4 meters of wall had disappeared and the pool was a big mess now. They said it will take 6 weeks to reconstruct but they will not start yet, but later on, before the summer season. Water is rather cold, so not many people would swim anyway.
The upper pool of course is still in use and the little one down by the ocean at the entrance to the hotel.
In summer these pools can also be used by non-guests at a price of 15 euro. It is a beach club, after all.
I was given a standard room again. I was offered an upgrade for next 2 nights but declined as the only difference is that the superior rooms are on top floor with a balcony, but for the rest they are identical and in this low season it did not matter to me that people can look inside as there were hardly any people and also I noticed that the ocean is reflected in the windows so that one has privacy still.
It was more crowded than 2 years ago when I was just about the only guest. Now in January it was about half full, 7 or 8 rooms of the 15.
No inside noises. I got too see the 1 suite. This is 2 former rooms joined together as there are still 2 bathrooms. But just a double bed and a sitting room.
Breakfast is quite nice with eggs made to order. Not my favourite cereal though (no crunchy cereal).
Bread is not wonderful on Madeira. It is hard to find good bread IMO.
The same huge restaurant is used for dinners and it is not atmospheric. I had my dinner brought to my room but did not know it would cost 6 euro service charge. but not expensive though, 9,50 euro for chicken, 14 for lamb. In town there are take-aways but it takes 20-25 mnutes to walk so not much of an option. Nice walk though and the promenade under the airport runway has been restored after the storm
The bed in the room felt harder than before. I did not like it but asked if they could improve it and they put a duvet under the sheet which made all the difference and made me sleep well.
TV has many channels but not BVN (Dutch) but the big TV in the recreation room did.
There's a free internet PC, but when sending an email, the button with the @ sign did not work.
I had to copy and paste it from the internet (arroba in Portuguese).
Nice was the free fruit basket when I arrived. Not replenished in next nights though.
The big supermarket in Santa Cruz (Sa) has gone. People have to go to Machico now.
The Santa Cruz Shopping mall is mostly empty now.
There are a few mini-mercados still but these dont have much. I could not find a 1 liter icecream anywhere. The minibar in the room has space for own things (1 big bottle fits in there).
All in all a good stay and l can well well recommend this hotel for peace seekers. One hears traffic a bit in the upper pool, but hardly the planes.

I stay in a lot of hotels for business and am generally left cold by the experience; this was for pleasure and it really was. Many hotels can have the bells and whistles that give them lots of stars, but too frequently they are following a formula. In the case of the Albatroz the setting and facities are excellent and the staff are the stars. Outstanding, thoughtful and chatty when you wanted it, service delivered in an unobtrusive way, and if you thought that wasn't possible - visit and give it a try. This is a small hotel with good sized rooms lokking straight over the sea. The pools, two of which are washed by the waves, are great and you wouldn't believe that it is soo close to the airport. The food was of a very high standard; many of the same dishes as elsewhere on the island, indeed restaurant menus seem remarkably similar throughout MAdeira but this was much the best interpretation, cooking and presentation of the various places we tried there. Prior to arriving here we had just about decided we were unlikley to return to Madeira, a visit to this hotel changed our minds.

Room Tip: upstairs possibly marginally better but all have great views

As always an amazing thing happens as you go through the gates of this hotel off the main road. You cannot hear anything from the airport right next door it is good sport watching the plans in the bay but u never hear them.
Life becomes magical just chill & read one of the many books found in the reading room on the 1st floor. Take a couple of days by one of the 3 pools read, sleep, everything you will need will be on hand. Then if you want to find the gems of the island ask the very helpful staff. You could walk down into Santa Cruz check out the small fish market, it will take about 10/15mins. You will need a car if you want to go around the rest of the island, but we hired a taxi (a friend of the taxi driver we used last time both spoke English ) He took us to some places you may have missed out on with the minibus trips. Nelson caught his 1st fish ever at one of the swimming pools it was a great way to spend the afternoon. Food was great as alway, Breakfast has a huge list of amazing yummy things fruit, cold meat, salmon, cooked English, cake, the amazing custard tarts & all that you would expect to find. Scarbard fish cooked the Albatroz way is really what Nelson loved the best. The stars were very bright in the sky, little boats of the fishermen with the lights they fish by looked like a reflection of above........... Did i say amazing staff ! We will be back again !

Room Tip: Any room is nice but 1st floor is amazing!

We wandered by one afternoon whilst staying on the island - the view from the hotel was amazing and we decided to return for an evening meal. We were made most welcome and enjoyed our evening there. We would recommend the hotel, its location and its quality of service.

We used our trusted TripAdvisor to book the Albatroz and again we were disappointed. From the minite we arrived until we drove away we felt part of a family. The staff were helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Everywhere was clean and well presented. We were amazed how quiet the hotel was being so close to the airport. The hotel was an ideal base for our walking holiday and are counting the days to our return. Thank you to all the staff.

Many thanks again Goncalo to you and the extremely dedicated staff of the Albatroz Hotel for our wonderful vacation again this year. Margaret & I had a great two weeks with you all again during September and look forward to return visits in the years ahead. Without doubt you have achieved & maintained a very high standard of hospitality at the Albatroz, this view being echoed in the various other reviews which I have read throughout this web site. What you're doing is exceptional so keep up the good work.

Room Tip: All the rooms are of an excellent standard with unrestricted sea views, balconies, well equipped and...

We stayed at this hotel four nights,September this year. The view from our room, second floor, sea and Deserted Island, was gorgeous.Every thing and every where, the garden and surroundings were beautiful . Breakfast was O.K. but for such a place we expected a more diverse and rich assortment. Although close to the airport it was tranquil.Staff was exceptionally nice, friendly and very helpful. Definitely we shall stay next time at this wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for second floor room
