It was my second visit to this marvelous hotel.
The previous hotel staff was gone but new receptionists Laura and Carlos, plus manager Goncalo and the others are also great people.
Biggest news: 6 weeks ago a big storm caused a lot of damage to Santa Cruz and also this hotel.
They had to close the main pool down by the ocean as 4 meters of wall had disappeared and the pool was a big mess now. They said it will take 6 weeks to reconstruct but they will not start yet, but later on, before the summer season. Water is rather cold, so not many people would swim anyway.
The upper pool of course is still in use and the little one down by the ocean at the entrance to the hotel.
In summer these pools can also be used by non-guests at a price of 15 euro. It is a beach club, after all.
I was given a standard room again. I was offered an upgrade for next 2 nights but declined as the only difference is that the superior rooms are on top floor with a balcony, but for the rest they are identical and in this low season it did not matter to me that people can look inside as there were hardly any people and also I noticed that the ocean is reflected in the windows so that one has privacy still.
It was more crowded than 2 years ago when I was just about the only guest. Now in January it was about half full, 7 or 8 rooms of the 15.
No inside noises. I got too see the 1 suite. This is 2 former rooms joined together as there are still 2 bathrooms. But just a double bed and a sitting room.
Breakfast is quite nice with eggs made to order. Not my favourite cereal though (no crunchy cereal).
Bread is not wonderful on Madeira. It is hard to find good bread IMO.
The same huge restaurant is used for dinners and it is not atmospheric. I had my dinner brought to my room but did not know it would cost 6 euro service charge. but not expensive though, 9,50 euro for chicken, 14 for lamb. In town there are take-aways but it takes 20-25 mnutes to walk so not much of an option. Nice walk though and the promenade under the airport runway has been restored after the storm
The bed in the room felt harder than before. I did not like it but asked if they could improve it and they put a duvet under the sheet which made all the difference and made me sleep well.
TV has many channels but not BVN (Dutch) but the big TV in the recreation room did.
There's a free internet PC, but when sending an email, the button with the @ sign did not work.
I had to copy and paste it from the internet (arroba in Portuguese).
Nice was the free fruit basket when I arrived. Not replenished in next nights though.
The big supermarket in Santa Cruz (Sa) has gone. People have to go to Machico now.
The Santa Cruz Shopping mall is mostly empty now.
There are a few mini-mercados still but these dont have much. I could not find a 1 liter icecream anywhere. The minibar in the room has space for own things (1 big bottle fits in there).
All in all a good stay and l can well well recommend this hotel for peace seekers. One hears traffic a bit in the upper pool, but hardly the planes.
