My wife and I spent a week at this hotel as a package through Thomson/First Choice. It was just about out of season and not many kids about! Our arrival was well received by the efficient, well spoken, receptionist. We were allocated room 1073 which was on the same level as the reception. A lovely room and did not smell of smoke as reported on other reviews. The double bed was massive and firm but very comfortable. The room was very modern and also big with a very nice bathroom. The balcony was a little narrow but fine. The only downside was that we paid extra for a sea view and although we could see the sea, it was restricted as there was a flat roof in front. We thought this was a little naughty but to be honest we could have complained but chose not to so our choice. The room was serviced daily with a sheet change once during the week. Toiletries were topped up daily. Clean and well furnished.

The hotel itself was well worthy of its 4 star rating with very well furnished public areas and immaculate. A small negative was that the public areas were quite warm and didnt seem to have air conditioning on. Again a disappointment was the fact that there were extra charges for internet (cable and wi-fi) when just 50 metres away there was free wi-fi available provided in the town square provided by Madeira. We thought this was not good for a quality hotel. The hotel also charges extra for use of the gym and indoor pool (11 Euros per day), again, disappointing for a quality hotel.

The outdoor pool was large and the surroundings well kept. During our stay we managed to get a sunbed but during high season this may have been a problem. Towels are supplied by the hotel but we only found this out after 3 days! Not a problem however as we had our own anyway.

The hotel provides a free minibus shuttle to Funchal. It is also fairly cheap and pleasant to catch one of the regular (every 15 mins) buses to Funchal and elsewhere.

We were staying on an 'all inclusive' basis. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner was on a buffet basis with snacks and ice cream available at any other time. Drinks were availabe which included, tea/coffee etc and also any soft drink, beers, spirits, local liquor and wines. There was a cocktail of the day.

The food was excelent with a good choice and changed daily. Waiters and waitresses were attentive.

Santa Cruz grew on us. A very quiet town/village with not much in the way of shops and a few bars which looked a little drab to us. Lovely views to sea from the promenade and views to the hills from everywhere else. The town has a waterpark within walking distance as well as a small shopping centre (nothing to get excited about!) with a supermarket for your cheap bits and pieces.

Being near the airport was absolutely fine. We could see the edge of the runway (nothing else) from our balcony and in fact it was rather nice to watch the infrequent plaaes coming and going. With the balcony doors shut there was no noise at all.

Room Tip: Beware of Rooms 1072 to 1076 which overlooks a flat roof (although a rather nice roof that looks lik...

Ok - to put to rest the main concern - the planes are really not a hassle - I promise - see photos. The majority of the time they land across the bay in front of the hotel - you really don't take any notice of them & there isn't much noise. On 2 occasions when the wind changed they took off towards the hotel - slightly noisier but still no problem.

The hotel is about 20 minutes from Funchal, & with the excellent road network it's easy to get around - although you do need a head for heights!
Santa Cruz itself is pretty tiny & there's not a lot there - but a couple of nice local bars, pretty squares & the church - & a lovely promenade walk.
If you want to just chill out, which we did, you couldn't ask for a better place - it's a beautiful island. We had the warmest October for 70 years apparently!

Good stuff - hotel is contemporary with smart decor & furnishings, & very very nice & friendly staff - without exception.
The A La Carte restaurant is also good & worth a visit - our All Inc included a meal there - lovely dining room & good food.
The pool is lovely - refreshingly cool - & the whole hotel, inside & out, is kept spotlessly clean.
Our room was on the side of the hotel facing the town, & it was absolutely fine. We could watch local life going by, the sea & the planes - all from our balcony. The room itself was a good size, with a kingsize bed, TV, DVD, air con etc - & the bathroom had a good shower!

There is a courtesy bus into Funchal running several times a day between 0900 & 1715 - (it would be nice if there was an occasional evening one too) - we went into Funchal twice & really liked it & would have liked to go back of an evening - but you do have to be careful of getting ripped off by taxi drivers so we chose not to use them.
The huge cruise ships dock in Funchal pretty much every day, so it's worth getting in there early & going for a wander around the old town - we didn't go up the cable car cos we're cowards! There are cafe's everywhere - all serving excellent coffee, & lots of little shops - you need to poke your head through the doors & look inside - they don't have big shop fronts like ours have.

Not so good stuff - hotel food quality was good, but food variety wasn't so good - room for improvement there.
Unfortunately, there was a large group of Polish guests staying at the same time as us - who drank the hotel dry of several drinks, & who were pretty inconsiderate towards other guests. I do feel the hotel could have done more to kerb their antics before they caused as much disturbance as they did.
On a personal note re the room - the pillows were very soft & squidgy - a choice of firmer pillows would be a nice idea, & the sheets were very starchy - not good for delicate skin.

Bad stuff - The Satsanga Spa. It now charges 11 euros for the day - & this is the only way you can use the indoor pool - expensive I think (it was 3 euros). We had one cloudy morning so we thought we'd spend the day in the Spa - only to be told we were expected to wear a silly little material hat in the pool for health & safety - absolute rubbish! It just means they don't have to clean their pool filters so often! The hat was so small it wouldn't even cover your head - so what is the point! We have used the Satsanga Spa in one of the Brazilian hotels - & never had such a ridiculous requirement - so it is not a company policy. We asked to see the manager - but no-one ever got back to us.
Also - don't expect cheap treatments - you'll pay the same or probably less in a Spa at home.
As it was, the weather was so fab we didn't want to use the Spa again - but it could so easily have been a big issue - disappointing.

Overall, I'd happily visit again. The hotel is very good value for money, is a pleasant environment, & above all has great staff - Fellipa in the bar & Sandra in the restaurant in particular.
A good chilled holiday - just what we wanted.

I recently stayed at Vila Gale for a week with my husband on an all inclusive basis, having made a reservation at the last minute. We were both pleased with the high standards of the hotel, the predominantly attentive staff, and the beautiful Madeiran location. It was a good base from which we could enjoy leisurely strolls or take longer walks; we also found it easy and inexpensive to travel out to other parts of the island without having hired a car.

The positives for us:
Comfortable, attractive and well maintained interior and exterior facilities. Plenty of seating areas and no shortage of sun loungers around the large pool. A good selection of food - granted, some of the food combinations seemed slightly odd - but there was always plenty of food available and something to satisfy most appetites. Helpful waiting staff in the main restaurant who delivered service with a genuine smile. Good standard of soft and alcoholic drinks. Room well maintained and very clean with comfortable bed. We also really liked the piped 'chill out music' that continually played in the background each day. For us it added to our relaxation levels. Although we like children very much, we don't like to holiday in areas full of children. Vila Gale was ideal for us in this respect. Most guests like ourselves were adults without children and this added to our relaxation experience. In fact we were delighted to have socialised with several other couples whose company we totally enjoyed - but without the noise of excitable children running everywhere in the distance!

The negatives for us:
In error our room was not serviced on one day; when it was serviced it was done so late in the day that we had run out of necessary bathroom essentials. The poolside snack bar was under-staffed with queues being the normality. The self serve hot drinks machine there was insufficient for the number of users and constantly ran out of water. The entertainments area bar was mostly well stocked but extremely under staffed. The one bar man serving was quite surly at times but who wouldn't be when under the pressure of serving onging queues of customers? But the oddest all inclusive moment for us had to be the 'dry evenings' that we encountered after the heat of the day... Yes, the hotel ran out of beer, gin, vodka and cola one evening and for most of the following day!!!

Other observation:
Locals in the area seem to be keen dog lovers. Our room on the fourth floor overlooked in the distance two private houses which had three barking dogs between them. They tended to bark in the early morning hours. Beyond the hotel's control of course.

Restaurant attire:
I like to dress for evening dinner, as I noticed did several other guests. For me this adds to the sense of holiday occasion. Both my husband and I were disappointed by the hotel's acceptance at evening meal time of all styles of dress, often including shorts and beachwear. I think dressing for dinner should be encouraged at Vila Gale.

Helpful tips:
If you want a lovely local dining experience with great service and delicious food, visit 'Bom Jesus' in Santa Cruz. It is located adjacent to the beautiful old church. Martin is a wonderful host who looks after all guests with dedicated care and thoughtfulness. And the food is fantastic value.

A trip to Mahchico (past the airport) is a nice day out. The bus stop is within a couple of minutes walk from the hotel and is less than 2 euros fare. About three times the size of Santa Cruz with a clean beach, lovely harbour, lots of history, great shops and decent generally inexpensive restaurants.

Don't worry about the airport being within five minutes of Vila Gale. It didn't cause any disturbance to our stay whatsoever.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the fourth floor if possible because of nearby barking domestic dogs!

Just arrived back from the Viila Gale overall enjoyed a very nice relaxing hollday. THe hotel is very clean and the staff are very helpful and welcoming. The rooms are very good even better than some 5 star hotels that we have stayed in, The main resrurant has good opening times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is nice but limited in choice. One thing I would say is that because the hot food is stored in shallow pot dishes sometimes the food was bit cool I prefer my food piping hot. The pool side bar does do snacks but again choice is limited. The bar is closes at 23.00 which is based on the main clientel which is the more mature couples not a place for young children say between 4 & 16. The hotel is in a very nice location close to the sea with a small walk to the little village. There is a supermarket 5 minuets walk away there are a few bars in the village. The hotel is very close to the airport so you do get planes coming over landing. There is not one every 5 mins not all so we found that this is not a problem. Although it is all inclusive there are no tea making facilities in the rooms, So if you are like me and like a drink before breakfast invest in a travel kettle. We had a partical sea view room which we found was perfect for us. We could sea and hear the sea and as it was on the inside we had a view of the pool area and bar..

.

Room Tip: Try and get a inside room over looking the pool

Just back from our 3rd visit to what we consider an excellent hotel, have to say this was the busiest we have seen the hotel but we still found the staff to be very friendly and attentive, although at times a litle stretched with the amount of people. We have made a lot of friends at the hotel and from the reception to the bar and restaurant and cleaning staff, they are all quite superb. Food was of a very good standard once again although we did find it a bit strange that the chef who is doing the cooking at the grill, also has to maintain the other hot dishes and also the salad and sweet dishes, which can create queues at times. For the first time we also used the A La Carte Restaurant which we thought was excellent, very well presented and cooked.

We were in room 3012 which had an excellent view of the village and the sea, spotlessly clean as usual, clean towels every day, sheets changed once a week, although I would agree with a previous comment re the smell of stale cigarette smoke, why cant they be made non-smoking , plenty of other areas to smoke, even on the balcony.

Just a couple of other minor gripes. On our first visit 4 years ago you were not allowed in the restaurant for dinner in shorts, this rule seems to have been dropped, which I think is a shame, a personal opinion I know, but I dont really want to sit next to somebody who looks like they have just come straight from the pool or a run. Lunchtime no problem, we all do it. The other gripe is the business of putting towels on sunbeds, there is a notice in the room saying that this is not allowed, but I saw people out there at 7:30 doing this. OK you put the towels out and go for breakfast and then come back to the sunbed but here were some putting them out in the morning and not using them till the afternoon. What makes it even more annoying is that there are plenty of sunbeds there for everybody. Pool itself is fantastic and very well maintained.

Entertainment in the evening is very laid back and not every night, not something we find particularly annoying, although it was exactly the same entertainment as 2 years ago, the local village dance troupe and the trio.

Overall we still think the place is great and will definitley be returning as soon as we can.

Just back after spending a lovely week at this hotel. I work in the travel industry and have done so for over 20 years and have spent time at many different hotels of varying standards, good and bad, this falls into the good percentage. I'll try to give a thorough and honest review of my stay - here goes.

On arrival, there is a ramp to take your luggage up to the main doors, but it would be useful to have a handrail up the main stairs, especially for those more elderly customers. Reception was helpful and polite at all times.

We were allocated room 3018 - at the very far end of the longest corridor directly facing the sea, literally about 10 metres from the waters edge - wonderfully private balcony, lovely comfortable patio furniture too. We often waved to the planes landing, this was part of our holiday, we knew how close we were to the airport and it was great fun - they literally pass right in front of our room but the noise was not awful at all and only lasted a few seconds, some days there were less than 8 flights coming in.

My only concern on entering the room was that the first thing that hit me was the smell of stale cigarette smoke, why do people feel the need to smoke in a hotel room, it is so selfish! The hotel can do nothing to stop them and even if they change the linen and curtains, these rooms have carpet which will trap stale smoke for years! It should be banned. We chose to live with it as we had such a great view but it could be smelled every time we entered the room and especially when we first turned the air con on it seemed to pick it up. In photos of the hotel I have seen, there are bath robes and slippers on the beds, not in my room, not sure what the deal is there. The beds were very comfortable but the pillows were shockingly bad, poor quality and offered no support, even getting some extras did not make that much difference plus I was surprised that a 4 star hotel did not change the bed linen in the whole week we were there (not that I do my own at home more than every week but that's not the point I am making here). Towels were however changed daily and the bath towels were of a good size, not the usual little ones that barely cover you up. Lots of hot water, tap water was fine for teeth and for making our tea too. The sink in the bathroom was pathetic, it might look trendy but is about the size of a medium sized mixing bowl and more the sort one would have in a small downstairs loo for instance, plus the black marble gets very dirty with soap and scum. There is a useful little shelf just above the free safe box to put a travel kettle (plug right there) and we kept milk in the little mini fridge. The TV was great, had various English news channels but also local channels that had UK TV shows on, Jamie Oliver seemed popular for some reason!!!!! There is also a DVD (get the remote from the reception), so if you like to retire early, perhaps take a couple of your favourite DVD's from home to watch, there are two most comfortable leather chairs in the rooms, ideal for watching a bit of telly with a hot drink and a brandy from the bar for a night cap.

Our corridor was very long, stuffy and warm - also sometimes poorly lit.

The pool area was superb, the water in the pool cool but refreshing and what a smashing size to be able to have a proper swim - a real highlight of our stay. There were plenty of sunbeds, and whenever we went out after breakfast we always got our choice of beds without having to reserve them. It was kept spotless, we saw the whole area being mopped and hosed down and even the beds scrubbed.

There was a small pool bar to get drinks, ice-creams and snacks from, to be honest I sort of got the impression that there was an element of "out of sight, out of mind" when it came to snacks here, nothing was on display and if you wanted a snack during the all-inc hours you asked for what you wanted and then were given a receipt (for stock control I was informed) and then waited whilst it came from the kitchen I believe. I did not see more than three people having snacks whilst I was there although to be fair they looked freshly made and tasty looking. Tea and coffee were from a machine on the counter, and the coffee with milk was very nice (nicer than at breakfast in my view).

Meals, let me start by saying I did not go hungry on my holiday but I was also not spoilt for choice with the food on offer at lunch and dinner. The was quite a limited choice of salad items (and often things would be emptied and not replaced - for instance one time a lovely bowl of prawns was emptied and replaced with a bowl of chopped olives instead). On another occasion there was no lettuce leaves, and there seemed to be fondness for left over brussel sprouts to be served as some sort of salad the next day (along with left over mushrooms and peas!). There was always a good selection of fresh fruits on offer and the bread rolls and pastries at breakfast were lovely. Some days were better than others for main dishes, there was a lot of pork which was sometimes a bit tough but the fish (especially the grilled salmon and the perch in butter sauce was wonderful). We had chicken twice in a week which was so tender it fell off the bone and another lunchtime they were were doing clams on the hot plate. On Madeira night (Wed eves) they were doing the famous beef kebabs but the queue was 25 people long to get one with one poor girl trying to serve one at a time, I went without and had something off the hot buffet instead although I really wanted one of those kebabs. Food was always hot, and also you could get a hot plate too, but make sure you use the napkins provided to pick them up, they really are hot plates which I really like to have my food on. Desserts, again sometimes there would not be much left apart from some sort of coloured, packet mix gloop in a glass dish but when there was gateaux, it was lovely. You could also make lovely ice-cream sundaes if you wished, complete with toppings etc. Personally I just think the food was a bit hit and miss and I've have had better (and worse!) at other 4 star hotels. They need some more staff in the restaurant, a few more choices of dishes for starters and a few more desserts I feel. The breakfasts were great, look out for the tiny little Portuguese custard tarts in the big pastry baskets every other morning, we always finished breakfast with a second cup of coffee and one of these, lovely!

It used to get very warm in the dining room too, by the end of dinner you would be sticking to the seat, they need to look at the air conditioning here.

Drinks are served by the waiters at dinner and lunch, they come to your table with water and a choice of wine served by the glass (we had the red wine which was perfectly fine). However, if you like more than one glass of wine with dinner you may be in for a fight to get their attention to serve a second (or third!) glass when the restaurant was busy (it seats 260 at capacity) and there were only about half a dozen serving staff in there, all of whom were very nice (we liked to sit on the bench seat along the wall close to the entrance, the young male waiter there was quite charming). The rest of the time I never had a problem getting a drink at the main bar (albeit there was normally only one chap on duty who was sometimes absent from his post out the back in the kitchen). That bar was a miserable place, poorly lit and lacking atmosphere, we much preferred to take our drinks outside onto the terrace, if they were to light some little tea lights in the main bar (like the ones provided in the bedrooms) it would make a huge difference.

All in all, a really nice hotel, despite a few criticisms from me, would I go back? Yes, with great pleasure and next time for two weeks. That should say it all really. Anyone who fails to enjoy their stay here or says they had no choice but to eat out, clearly has chosen the wrong place and is even fussier than me about the food. I hope this review helps, please feel free to message me if you are travelling here and want any further information.

Room Tip: Book a sea view or ask for a room close to the sea.

We stayed for 1 week at the villa gale at the end of august. The hotel is immaculate and value for money on AIl inclusive is fantastic. The food was varied and something for everyone.
We met some really nice people and will keep in touch with 2 of them who dont live too far away in England from ourselves. What was annoying was other guests that placed towels on the sunbeds before 7.30 in the morning and you would not see them use the beds until 2 - 3 in the afternoon or on some occasions they never used them. This was rude as it seemed to be 2 parties of around 8 in each party so there was a lot of beds unused. The management have notices in the rooms etc. for this not to happen but obviously some people just go ahead and ignore.

The weather was very changeable. We cloud bathed most of the time and on 2 occasions rain bathed. On one day we put 3 parasols together and sat and chatted and watched the rain pour down.

The itallian restaurant was lovely and it was my birthday so my partner had ordered a beautiful bouquet of flowers for me and on this evening i had wore a long cream dress and a flower headband so it was really funny walking through the hotel as we looked like we had just been married. It was a talking point and had lots of the guests numerous nationalities approaching us and asking if this was the case. No just my birthday.
If you do have flowers whilst in Madeira you can take them home. If you dont want them as hand luggage (get squashed easily) The airport charges 3 euro's to box them up and you check them in as fragile. My bouquet is still in my kitchen window and every time i look at it I think of Madeira and the Villa Gale and what a lovely time we had and we will most definitely return.
