“Beautiful setting among the vines”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2011

For a family of four adults, we reserved the two story suite with a double down and twins up. The rooms were spacious and airy. The bathroom, with a view of the very nice pool, was reminiscent of that found in a dormitory...huge with lots of dated tiling and not one, but two enormous walk in showers - very clean to be sure. I can only imagine that it costs a fortune to renovate a Chateau, so I am certain the owners are working their way through that process bit by bit. The lobby was gloomy, and the 'garden' needs some tending to. The staff was very friendly. We opted not to have dinner at the Chateau, preferring instead to venture into St. Emilion, which was worth the trip. Our visit to this charming town was the highlight of our visit to France!

We found Château de Roques on the internet. The older reviews were very negative, but we learned the hotel changed owners not too long ago. The new owners redecorated and freshened up the place, but unfortunately buying a Chateau is obviously expensive, because our room looked like an Ikea-catalogue. We dined in the restaurant the first evening and did not dare finish our tuna - it smelled and tasted not very fresh. However, the whole place is tidy, which is becoming quite rare in France nowadays. Staff was friendly, there is ample parking space and the castle, the domain and the region are very beautiful. All in All it's not too bad, but the pricing is not on par with what you get.

We had 2 rooms, a charm and a standard for 1 night here, It was a beautiful setting, the gentlemen who checked us in was very helpful and the evening meal was delicious albeit the staff were rather slow in serving you.
The rooms were lovely and after the awful hotel we stayed in Spain, it was a welcome relief to arrive there.
I would certainly stay there again, no hesitation.

evening meal good on our arrival on the sunday evening, but quality changed from monday to thursday the standard of cooking declined tramaticly. Friday and Saterday evening meals good again. We were staying demi-pension; bedroom would benefit from a full length mirror. Nowere to relax on a wet day except in the bedroom sitting on the bed as there were no comfortable chairs to sit on.

This was a wonderful choice for myself and my just-turned-19-year-old daughter. We stayed en route from the Loire Valley to the Basque country. The hotel itself is exactly what you'd expect of a Bourdeux chateau winery. The staff were relaxed and welcoming ("Please! Go have a walk in the vineyards to stretch your legs!") the wine-tasting great fun (part wine/part history and the caves amazing), the room we chose was one of the simpler room but it was large and had an unbelievable view of vineyards. All in all an experience I'd happily repeat!

We arrived at the Chateau on Bastille day after driving 300km and exploring a packed St Emilion and it was a breath of fresh air. The setting is breath taking, of course, but the beauty does not end outside. Our room was quite lovely. We had room #10, a charm room. It was very spacious and even had a little outdoor deck. My one complaint would have be that we did not have much of a view as there was a large sliding glass door, but beyond that, there was the wall of the castle with a small 'porthole' in it to peek through. This little deck, however was perfect for stargazing. From the hotel we went for a few walks around the property. If you walk straight out the front door and walk along the gravel road for about ten minutes, there is a plum tree on the left side. If you are lucky enough to catch it at the right time, you will be treated to wonderful little red plums. I spent at least 20 minutes gorging on them, and then filled my pockets for later, which meant 5 minutes later. Anyhow, it's a very nice hotel, but what made it for me was the surroundings and the price. We spent about $100/night and were treated to a very lovely experience. As far as some peoples comments on service, I thought it was quite sweet that the same person who showed you to your room, serves you dinner. I had a little issue with a vineyard appointment and the woman at the desk was more than willing to call them for me (she tried multiple times, but the winemaker was on his tractor and couldn't hear it.) The food was fairly good, traditional French fare, but one night was enough for us. I did really enjoy the wine that the make there, though and St Emilion has some great little places for dinner.

Chateau de Roques although warm and inviting from the outside left us feeling a bit chilly from the lack of hospitality.

The staff could take a few lessons on ambiance and warmth from the beautiful fireplace in the dinning room and the charming rooms.

Upon arrival they barely spoke to us, leaving us to wonder around the Chateau hoping to find out a little more about the property, and only giving one word answers to our questions.

The biggest issue though came when I asked to utilize a computer to check a tasting reservation upon checkout. Unfortunately for us, I forgot to print it it and could not remember the name. She refused to allow us to use the computer and or check it for us and recommended that we drive 20 minutes into St-Emillion to the tourist office.

Needless to say by the time we got to St. Emillion and found a PC it was too late to make our reservation of which was one of the only places doing tastings during harvest. :{

Sooo although a very clean, neat chateau, I would say stay at one of the many other choices who not only may welcome you with a smile but might be willing to help you out in a tight situation.
