“Don't Bother”
Reviewed May 9, 2010

We booked one night at Cameron House following on from a stay in Prestonfield in Edinburgh, as we had business in Glasgow the next day. We had stayed there in the past, prior to the much-vaunted refurbishement, and I was looking forward to seeing what they'd improved upon. Answer is not much! We arrived around 4pm to find Cameron House hosting a wedding and not coping very well. The self-park car park was closed and valet park was the only option offered. The overworked, understaffed, valets could not cope with the simultaneous demands of the residents and the wedding guests. The first question asked by the reception staff was 'have you booked your dinner? We are very busy tonight.' Welcome! The standard double room with loch view in the newly added wing was stylish, but small and very dark . One of the windows was permanetly sealed and blacked out - it was overlooked by an adjoining room. Hope they didn't pay the architect for that one. The bathroom on the other hand was spacious and well provisioned.
We walked to the boat house for a cool drink. The boat house had been nicely extended since our previous stay, and had lots more water-inspired furnishings. Sadly it was staffed by youngsters who had no understanding of service and even less of mixing cocktails. At least two tables sent theirs back - I was asked what made up a white wine & soda (?) - and clearing up was non-existent.
That said, we also ate dinner in the restaurant there and the contrast was amazing. The food service staff were prompt, attentive and very friendly. Probably the high point of the stay. The newly refurbished Great Scots bar was fine with lots of interesting photos of famous Scots, sparking conversation as to who we would have added or left out.
Back in our room, the bed was seriously disappointing , with one of the thinnest, hardest, nastiest mattresses I have slept on since I left my student days, Have they not heard of pillow tops? memory foam, luxury of any kind? Additionally the now very merry wedding guests serenaded us from time to time as they made their way to their rooms. Don't you just hate when your sleep is interrupted by people enjoying themselves?
To add further insult, we received a letter under the door, helpfully suggesting that we might like to eat breakfast down at the Boat House, rather than in the hotel itself as , surprise surprise, they expected to be very busy in the dining room. That was pretty much the last straw. Despite having paid for B&B, we skipped the latter and headed to the city for some real hospitality
All in all this was one disappointing stay and other than location, it's hard to understand why this hotel is ranked alongside some of the other top hotels in Scotland - Prestonfield, Inver House, Loch Torridon. In fact on the same trip we also stayed at teh Crowne Plaza at the SECC and I'd rank that way above C.House for quality of service.
I did talk to the duty manager on check out and she did offer to compensate us by giving us a voucher for free accommodation on our next trip. Is she kidding? Life is too short to spend another night in that particular horror chamber.

I can't believe some of the reviews people have written about this hotel i really can't, i was a little nervous about going to this hotel given the bad rating of the hotel staff and food, but i could not have faulted this hotel one little bit!

The staff were very friendly and very attentive to there customers right from the consierge through to the staff in the resturants and bars, the waiter in the Boat House remebered us from lunch time and enquired in to our day asking if we had enjoyed our stay so far i felt very welcomed, the wine was a little expensive but VERY nice the steak was the best steak i had ever eaten i put a piece in my mouth and it melted i thorughly enjoyed the food and drink and relaxed atmousphere of the Boat House!

The room was first class when i walked in we took one look out across the Loch (well worth the extra money for the view) and felt instantly relaxed, we even opted for Breakfast in bed - which was free and brough hot and at our required time - the fluffy bathrobes are so lovely!

The health club there if you don't mind children is loevely also and much fun as there is a water slide also which adults can also enjoy :-) - there is also a garden chess and mini golf.

Much to say i had a wonderful time and i can't wait to go back to have another lovely enjoyable stay!

I only stayed for one night but found my experience at Cameron House to be first class. Hotel staff were always courteous and friendly and service very good. I particularly enjoyed my trip on the champagne loch cruise, which, together with a lovely sunny day was an experience to remember. The Boathouse restaurant was great especially with the lovely views over the loch. Can't wait to go back.

The more you pay the longer you wait. A fabulous hotel with 5 star luxuries. But the service I would say is 2 star. We ordered room service twice and it never arrived. When we told reception they apologised and said there would be some extras in the room when we returned that evening. They never arrived. We queued for breakfast. When the waitress cleaned the table next to us we were sprayed with cleaner. There was never enough plates, on both mornings and the orange juice ran out and was never replenished. We decided to book an extra night because of the heavy sonow and problems with travelling 300 miles home. My husband was told there was no available room. When I asked a few minutes later we were offered a room at a rediculous price. Because it is such a lovely hotel in a brilliant position we will try it again in the hope that customer service has improved.

My husband and I both agree that although this is a beautifully designed and appointed hotel, the only consistency throughout the hotel was the very, very poor service. We were traveling with a group of 19 other couples (who also voiced a similar opinion). The bar, lobby, rooms, restaurants and common areas highly contradict what you would expect from the staff in a setting such as this. The lack of organization and chaotic behavior exhibited by almost all of the staff in the hotel was incongruous with a 5 star rated hotel.. The food and the service in The Boathouse was mediocre at best. Loch Lomond is such a special place, so it is really unfortunate that this hotel is such a disappointment.

Stayed for 4 nights to incorperate our annivesary and yet again we enjoyed the tranquility, service and ambience of this hotel, the weather was poor for the 1st 2 days (snow & rain) but we were able to venture out in the lovely countryside.
would recommend as we have never encountered any problems when we visit, will be back again next year.

We went to Cameron House for two nights spa and relaxation after a city break in Edinburgh. I booked this hotel because of the luxury aspect and that it seemed like a real spa retreat on the website. Having stayed in 5 star hotels before we were very much looking forward to it.
When we arrived check in was smooth but when we got to our room there were a few issues. I had booked a double room which turned out to be twin beds pushed together but still with separate bed linen etc. There was also a bit of a lack of attention to detail eg no toilet paper in the bathroom. The room was extremely hot too for the entire duration of the stay. The 'garden view' was actually a view of the car park however I suppose there were some shrubs around the car spaces.
We decided to go to reception and book into the Carrick Spa but I felt very misled as the website implies that facilities are included for hotel guests however use of the Carrick Spa was an extra £35 per person per day. We then decided to use the leisure facilities at the hotel instead which were nice but full of local kids and it very much had a Butlins/Centre Parcs type feel to it which was a let down.
Things did not get better from there. In the Great Scots Bar, the bartenders seemed to only be interested in one side of the bar. We managed to order a drink but then had to send it back and show the bartender myself how to serve it (it was a simple mixer and spirit). He was very pleasant but didn't seem to have been trained atall. We ate in the Cameron Grill both evenings and it was perfectly decent but absolutley nothing special and certainly not worth the prices they were charging (£35 steak and chips, £28 and upwards for an average bottle of wine)! We had paid less for a meal at a Michelin starred restaurant in Edinburgh and enjoyed it an awful lot more.
I suppose my point is that Cameron House is a perfectly adequate hotel with nice facilities and nice food etc but it is in no way a 5 star luxury hotel and spa. We had booked on a spring break deal so it was a bit cheaper but I would have been very upset if I had been paying the full rate as I'm afraid it is not worth it.
