“Perfect Beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014 via mobile

If you are looking for a quiet beach holiday then the Heliconia Hideaway Beach Bungalow is perfect. Located almost at the halfway point from the main town on Rarotonga's circuit road, it's secluded and nestled on a gorgeous sandy beach. Everything is provided for you - even a happy birthday surprise if your lucky enough to be celebrating that event. We were lucky to have the most amazing weather and we swam everyday. There is a resort just nearby that you can visit and enjoy an evening cocktail or morning coffee and a bus right out your front door for further travels. Across the road is a beautiful garden and cafe you can visit at your leisure. The hosts, Hinano and John, are up for a chat or leave you to enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings. If resorts are not your ideal getaway, then this little slice of paradise will tick all your boxes.

Is it not true that we have all seen the pictures read the descriptions of a place only to find that it is not what it looks like nor what they said it was? WELL Heliconia does and is what it looks like and the descriptions are possibly even understated. Truly, a very special place in the world. A villa on a stunning private beach, great swimming and snorkelling at any tide level (beware as not all places on the island are good at low tide!).Location is excellent shops etc restaurants all in walking distance. The self catering facilities are excellent with absolutely everything... BBQ on the deck, microwave, pots pans lovely glassware etc...just what you would expect in a well equiped kitchen anywhere. The complimentary plunger coffee tea, milk, sugar cooking oil etc etc..,lovely fruits on arrival, AND bottles of red white.sparkling wines from the owners vineyard were a superb touch and very yummy too! The bathroom and private outdoor bath/shower are as gorgeous as they look in the pictures. So romantic and really special.Outdoor furniture is abundent so you can relax on the deck eat there or relax and eat on the sand. Kayak and snorkelling gear is yours exclusively too. An endless list of special touches really. The gardens around the villa are really delightful. The hosts are involved and uninvolved at a superb level by this I mean they are really helpful friendly and keen to ensure you are happy and cared for in every way,yet they also respect and care for your privacy and quiet relaxation. This is the way the staff also interact really helpful and friendly yet unobtrusive.
We looked at many places and then walked past and through some. We felt truly lucky to have selected Heliconia it was/is the best by comparison. I would book it now because as people find out about Heliconia I am sure it will become increasingly more difficult to secure a holiday at this unique and very special spot in Rarotonga.

Room Tip: On the beach is best

We have just enjoyed 15 days’ stay at Heliconia Bungalow on beautiful Titikaveka Beach in Rarotonga. Firstly let me say that the weather is always a lottery in winter and we live in a place in Central Otago that gets very cold, so we left in -6 degrees celcius and decided that we didn’t care what the weather did – we were on holiday and would be very happy whatever happened…. And along came a southerly front for the duration of the trip which didn’t mean it was cold – just windy enough on the beach that we couldn’t swim or snorkel there apart from 1 day. (We went to Aroa most days for some lovely shelter). The well-appointed cottage is set right back from the beach (maybe 30m?) and in a sheltered, very beautiful, long narrow garden. The house next door is owned by the owners and has a walled garden to give a feeling of relative privacy. You can lie in bed and see a bit of the sea which is beautiful. It has two bedrooms with an extra single in the spacious lounge and feels light and airy. Ok – a couple of negatives for us: the first one is the relative proximity to the road with only a hedge to shelter you from the traffic. This won’t be a problem if you are used to traffic but we found it really noisy and mostly used the next door bedroom so that we could get a decent sleep. There are ceiling fans but no insect screens on the windows…. We used several cans of repellent and burned nightly coils against the mosquitoes just so we could sit outside (or inside). We stayed for 15 nights and only had our sheets and towels changed once, after 6 days. If you want this to happen more regularly then you will need to speak to the owners, Hinano and John (he was away when we were staying). Hinano was a good host; loves a chat and was happy to deliver some more of their excellent well-priced wine during our stay. The staff delivered fresh fruit from time to time. There is purportedly a lot of petty crime on the island so we made a point of hiding our important stuff when we went out, or Hinano can secure it for you, but there is no safe.
Now for the good stuff  Although it’s not inexpensive Helicona is a great base for a family or couple on what is truly a beautiful beach. It’s close to Little Polynesian for the odd lunch or dinner by the pool, and about 30 minutes’ walk from Muri. We hired a little convertible from Polynesian Car Rentals and it was fun, particularly as the weather was a bit changeable for the first week. The cottage is well-appointed with a dishwasher, plenty of hot water and a pretty good shower, a washing machine and some supplies to get you started, oil, salt, pepper, some breakie, and oh joy (!!) – a couple of bottles of excellent complimentary wine when we stumbled through the door in the middle of the night. There is a café – Maire Nui right across the road in a stunningly gorgeous botanical gardens where we ate one night. So – we are happy campers, pretty much. We had a lovely and long-overdue break and very much enjoyed our stay.

We had the pleasure of staying at both the Beachfront Villa and the Bungalow during our stay.

Bungalow
The Bungalow is comfortable and homely. We were self catering and everything needed was there including platters and enough cutlery/crockery for hosting guests and a dishwasher (yay). There is no air-conditioning, but ceiling fans do help. There is a short walk to the beach, and a picnic table set up down there for meals etc. There are two beach loungers which we took down to the beach. You are alongside the road, however there is a lush hedge, so privacy is not a problem - you can hear cars/scooters from time to time, but it wasn't intrusive. We cooked on the barbeque most nights - there is a good size fridge/freezer. Mozzie coils were provided which we also supplemented as the front deck (which is surrounded by garden) does get some insect action at night. We had a mosquito net, which we used so we could leave the doors open for the cool night air - I think there was a net there at the bungalow, but I didn't go looking for it as we had our own. Good value and clean basic accommodation.

The Villa
Wow, try to treat yourself to a couple of nights. Its just gorgeous. Again, we were self catering, so the amenities were terrific. A good supply of staples such as olive oil, breakfast cereals, milk, fruit etc were very welcome as was the lovely gift of red wine (the owner's winery) and top notch bubbles. A truly lovely covered deck with a couple of steamer chairs and I was in heaven. Actually did not leave (other than to swim/snorkel right out the front) for the whole time we were there. A lovely outdoor shower/pebbled bath was a tropical treat. Massive king size bed, flat screen tv (didn't turn it on, outdoor view was just too good). Very nice bathroom with an open shower, which unfortunately was not operational - a problem if you had any type of mobility issue.

I would say that you should take a sleep mask if you are woken by light, as the room gets light quite early.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this lovely property and would definitely stay there again.

Very comfortable self contained villa with amazing hosts. Breakfast on the beach was my favourite time of the day and not another soul around. I love Rarotonga and hate having to leave the island. Such a paradise.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights as a stopover on our way to New Zealand. We enjoyed it so much that we made arrangements with John and Hinano to stopover on our way back from NZ. Our gracious hosts arranged for fresh coconut, and fruit to be delivered everyday in addition to supplying us with some great wine and champagne. The spacious, well appointed villa is a perfect accommodation for a couple looking to get away. Great snorkeling and kayaking are just feet from the back porch. The views of the lagoon and the sounds of the waves breaking on the reef are unbelievable. If you get the idea that we enjoyed our stay--you're right!! Ace and Heather

My partner and I and my 14 yr old son stayed for 5 nights at Heliconia. The two bedroom Bungalow was the Perfect size and had great amenaties. We had a BBQ every single morning for breaky and several dinners. It was just so relaxing to sit on the deck, cooking a bbq and looking out over the garden through to the aqua reef and white sand. The Bungalow is very comfortable, clean and tidy. I felt very safe and we made ourselves at home very quickly. We made good use of the Kayake and snorkelled right out to the floating boy. The staff were excellent (Sami & Tucker) welcomed us with warm opened arms, took us through the bungalow showing us where everything was and how to use BBQ, dishwasher, TV, lights etc. So it was a very warm welcome. My son loved the bungalow and every day played in the back yard, on the deck and down on the beach. The only thing i was a little surprised at was the beach was a little further down the yard than what i was expecting. But in saying that, it was probably better and we were more protected by the garden etc. The Botanical Gardens accross the road from the bungalow are amazing and a must see. We loved our stay at Heliconia and will definately be back again some time soon i hope.
