Having a rather poor experience some years ago, with another holiday house, it was with some trepidation that I agreed with Jane to rent Iro's Beach House. Arriving at some ungodly hour , approx 1.30am, we were more than happy that we had chosen well.
Clean, well equipped and right on the beach we couldn't wait to sunrise and to start exploring our surroundings.
We went to sleep with the sound of the waves breaking on the reef some 200 metres away.
Next morning a quick trip to pick up the scooter, pre booked by the agent Jenny, and off to the Saturday market. Great choice of vegetables and two magic bakery stalls saw us set up for the first few days.
Wigmores supermarket, 3 or 4 mins away on the scooter had more than enough choice and prices were not too bad either. We took some bits and pieces for evening hors doevres to have with our gin and tonics and were surprised to see the same gourmet olives we bought at Countdown, not only stocked but cheaper.
The Iro family have won us over with their hospitality and service and with the Grandparents, living opposite, having a fresh fruit and vegetable stall meant fresh Paw Paw for breakfast every day. The beach is fine for swimming , not at low tide, but just 50 metres either way from house had good swimming at all tides. Snorkeling was OK but we have been spoilt with Fiji and Tongan experiences.
Great BBQ on the deck and plenty of coconut trees for us to sling our hammocks. We always take our own to ensure we have somewhere to lay back and read our books/kindles.
The family were very taken with the hammock idea and we feel sure they will be adding some to the house kit.
Titikaveka is about halfway around the Island from Avarua so you can get either clockwise or anti clockwise buses at the gate and the journey to town is the same distance.
Great sunsets, peaceful surroundings [ the house is well back from the road] and beach front . What more can you ask for.
It was great to see the local dogs playing silly buggers in the early morning before the day heated up and they all seemed to have big smiles on their faces. The holiday home next door had two young children in for some of the days we were there and they played and played with the dogs.
Lots of chickens and ,of course some were cockrels, but what is a Pacific Island holiday without waking to the sound of early morning crowing!
Would we reccommend Iro's as a place to stay? Would we ever!!
We will definitely be going back again.
