“Perfect Location on the Island”
Reviewed September 14, 2009

We just got back from 6 fabulous days in Rarotonga. I had done all my research thru Trip Advisor on locations and was very happy with the Moana Sands. The location is wonderful, peaceful and the swimming, snorkling cannot be beat. The water is crystal clear with so many fish you would think you are at the Aquarium. Wish the weather had been a bit more warm but there were a few sunny days and when that sun came out, you felt it. Loved the wind blowing thru the palm trees and hearing the ocean as you slept. The room was cleaned each day with fresh flowers. All rooms have an ocean/lagoon view. Having the PawPaw restaurant next door was great too. We had excellent food-especially the Thai Chicken Salad which my boyfriend loved.
Getting around Rarotonga is easy by bus. The bus stops right outside the hotel. We had wonderful food everywhere we went, but our favorite was Trader Jack's in Avarua.
Right on the water. Rarotonga is truly a "gem" to be discovered. Very few American's seem to travel there, mostly New Zealanders. The island is lush and clean and on our last day there while walking down the "back road" were greeted by a resident on a scooter who stopped to welcome us. The people are friendly and we were really amazed at how tidy and clean it was. I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for beachfront at a very affordable price.

We were one of the first families to try the brand new Moana Sands Villas. We got a surprise upgrade to them from the main hotel. A very pleasant surprise that is. The villa is split into 6 apartments. Ours had two ensuite bedrooms and a spacious lounge/diner with modern kitchenette, including fridge/freezer, microwave combination oven and small hob. The water was filtered and safe. There was also a lovely balcony with patio furniture, overlooking the crystal clear lagoon. The beach is adjoining the Villa and is exactly like a postcard picture. We were rarely in anyone else's company there except for the occasional walker. Our hours spent snorkelling in what seemed like the giant tropical fish tank of the lagoon were blissful. The lagoon is totally safe as long as you wear reef shoes to prevent cuts on the rock and coral. There are also plenty of sandy areas and it doesn't get too deep anywhere. There are free masks and snorkels as well as Kayaks. At night because of the almost complete lack of light pollution the stars are amazing and very romantic! The maid and handyman (Angel and Mercy!) couldn't do enough for us and always greeted us with a cheery smile. In fact everything about the place was great. The owner Althea, was very charming and welcoming, showing genuine concern that we had the best time. There is a small local supermarket opposite, a bus stop right outside and one good restaurant in both directions within walking distance. The only down side (if that is what it was) and this is being picky, was that there was not much else close by and if you want more, you will need to either make good use of the buses or hire a car. Some however may think that this was a bonus. Don't miss the HIghland Paradise, both for the day tour and evening 'Island night'. Both are fun and informative and transport is provided.

The best holiday ever.

Our room was great, clean & spacious, and with a lovely balcony overlooking the lagoon. The beach position is perfect- great swimming and snorkelling just steps from the hotel.

The restaurant in the hotel serves good food, but it's really easy to get around to other places too. We caught the round the island bus for evenings out, and visited restaurants all around the island. Cycling is also really easy, and a lovely way to see around the island.

The accommodation on either side of Moana Sands charge about 3-4 times as much for the same beautiful location. We'd be back to Moana Sands in a flash.

I would recommend the Moana Sands Beachfront Hotel over the Pacific Resort. It's in much more reasonably priced and in a patch of beach/ocean that has been named a "marine reserve" so it's very pristine, and there is lots of marine life. I would recommend their rooms on the 3rd floor (which I think are their best rooms in house). If you stay here, you are beachfront, without the beachfront/resort price. You also don't have to deal with a suffocating resort atmosphere (without any local culture), which was definitely a plus for us. The continental breakfast isn't a buffet by any means, but the fruit, toast, and cereal provided is excellent quality and filling none-the-less.

We went here on our honeymoon and absolutely loved our stay.

My parents and I stayed at Moana Sands for a week and had an amazing time!! the Moana Sands is the perfect place to stay if you want to go on an island holiday. The accomodation was superb - very modern facilities, spacious and very clean. We had our own kitchen area which was brand new- we loved this as we enjoyed being able to do our own food as opposed to having to go out all the time. The rooms were thoroughly cleaned daily by the lovely cleaners.

The location was the best. We were right on the beachfront. It was a tiny walk into the sea for a swim, the snorkeling was great! i have never been to a place where the snorkling was so close! it felt like our own private beach! it was a very peaceful place to stay. We have been on island holidays before and our sole purpose is to be able to relax and have a break from our busy lives. Moana Sands was the perfect place to do that. It is very peaceful and relaxing!

The Service was outstanding. The manager was the best we have come across. She was very attentive, often visiting us to check all was well and giving us fantastic advice about various activities to do on the island. She was very polite and friendly. The other staff were all excellent also!

I will definately be going back to Moana Sands next time I go to Rarotonga. I would recommend this as a place to stay for anyone who is going to stay in Rarotonga. Our best Island holiday by far! I can't wait to go back.

After exploring the many hotels and beaches in Rarotonga, we were so pleased we stayed at Moana Sands. It was peaceful, the staff were friendly, island bus stops at the front door, there is a cool restaurant on-site plus self-catering facilities provided...all this… right on the sand…on the best beach!!!

We stayed at the Moana Sands Hotel because our travel companions had stayed there 3 years previously. They were sure we would fall in love with the hotel and its location, and they were so right – it was all ideal for us. The hotel has an excellent site on the white-sanded Titikaveka Beach and the best stretch of the Island’s lagoon. We had a ground floor room which opened out onto a tiled patio and from there a short walk across freshly-combed sand past the coconut palms took us down to the water’s edge. There were ample sun loungers, kayaks and snorkeling equipment, and the lagoon fish were amazing to watch and feed in the clear water. The view from the hotel was stunning with a beach in both directions and waves gently breaking over the reef a few hundred metres away. The accommodation was perfectly adequate although showing a little tiredness here and there. Nevertheless, the place was clean and tidy, and fresh blooms were placed on the bed when the room was cleaned every day. The hotel issued vouchers for use in the adjoining Paw Paw Patch restaurant for breakfast of fruit, cereals, toast, tea/coffee, which was perfectly adequate for us in the warm weather. The restaurant also served excellent food in the evenings with a good choice on the menu at reasonable prices, and the hosts Meagan and Tooks were keen to ensure customers were happy. Their staff even recommended we used ‘Seafaris’ for a sports fishing trip – and we weren’t disappointed; we caught the first Marlin (71Kg) of the season. For a small fee, Meagan’s staff also provided a salad to go with our BBQ of home-caught tuna. One evening, the Paw Paw Patch provided live entertainment from a female singer-guitarist that will probably turn professional she was that good! A store is situated about 10 minutes down the road, and so it was possible to grab a snack if we didn’t want to make the trip to Avarua. The island bus service stopped outside the hotel and was cheap and very reliable with Avarua some 20 minutes away. As a consequence, we saw no need to hire personal transport, but instead worked with the bus schedule to go places. We quickly came to accept that life went at the relaxed pace of ‘island time’. Through the hotel, we booked to go on the Island Experience evening, which was most informative and entertaining. The hotel manager, Althea Oldman was helpfulness personified, and her staff were all equally supportive and cooperative. Although the guest internet equipment was awaiting technical intervention, Althea ensured we were able to send essential emails through the office to keep in touch with home. It’s true that reception was not always manned, but staff were there at core times, which was what we would have expected for a modest establishment of this nature. I cannot understand some of the overly negative comments about the hotel. It is what it is – a little piece of superbly situated quiet heaven which is away from the bustle and raucousness of the pool-side crowd. Book with confidence, take off your watch and relax in a spot of paradise. We will certainly do our utmost to return.
