We didn't stay in the hotel itself but used the bar and the restaurant. The restaurant has possibly the cheapest prices in the island but offers the same great food quality nonetheless. Typical main dish is about 120 bahts.
Bar has fire show at about 9-9.30 every night and is maybe the most popular bar on the island ( having said that its not too busy! )

First of all - do not book the cheapest bungalows. There is only a fan, holes under beds and in walls and cockroaches or other insects can be inside the "building"
After 1 night I've changed bungalow to the more expensive one (+500 THB extra) with air con. No holes, quite nice room and rest of stay was excellent.
Quiet island, no routes, nice beaches, magnificent views.
If you are looking for entertainment do not stay to long. It is boring during evenings.
Breakfasts are included and were OK (american or continental style)

The reception is in a shed, not a good start. We were then shown to our bungalow. It was dark dank, airless and shabby. The Electricity only works from 5 pm till 5am so it was also hot!
I found alternative accommodation at the Fantasy resort for only 600 baht extra. I happily paid the first night fee to not stay there. I wouldn't give it one star but trip advisor have that as the minimum.
Do not waste your money on this!

First of all, if you're going to Koh Ngai, you shouldn't be looking for a club scene or a lot to do. It's a pretty laid back island with some great snorkeling off the beach, nice sandy beaches, beautiful views and some kayaks for rent. There are probably around 8-10 places to stay and eat on the island with varying degrees of cost - Koh Ngai Villas being at the budget end. The whole island is on generators, and the Villas have power from around 5 or 6 in the evening until the same time in the morning. The higher prices hotels probably offer power all day. I stayed in one of the "grass shack" bungalows and they are very basic, but also very inexpensive. The bedding was clean and there were screens on the windows. Basically, these bungalows are one step above camping and, if you want something more luxurious, you can certainly find it on this island. I liked the cost, the shelter, the people who worked there and it was a great beach offering lots of shade. In fact, people from the higher end hotels came to "our" beach because of the shade and hospitality of the staff.

Room Tip: The bungalows are VERY basic. The aircon rooms are a step up.

One's stay on Kho Ngai consists of activities along a short stretch of beach on one side of the island where 3-4 resorts lie. This place is one of the less expensive, but very comfortable and very low key. One has the spectacular beach, good food (and one can opt to eat anywhere), a quiet little bar, Isaan food by the bar, and charming staff.
