In crossing from the Andaman coast to the Gulf of Thailand, my partner and I chose to take a short sojourn from sun and sea in order to explore a non-touristy Thai city. My Friend Guesthouse was a perfect if simple base for our two-day/two-night exploration of Trang.
ROOM: We stayed in a twin air-conditioned room with window, for THB590, which was cosy and somewhat reminiscent of a twin bedroom in an elderly relative's house. The bathroom was a fairly small wet room, but it was spotlessly clean.
FACILITIES: there was an indoor lounge area near the reception, and outside at the front of the guesthouse was a small pot plant garden with tables and chairs. The guesthouse is a multi-floor building with no lift, so if you're not partial to stairs then I recommend requesting a room on a lower floor.
SERVICE: Staff were unobtrusive. We had no real need to interact with them other than check-in/check-out, but they seemed pleasant enough for that.
LOCATION: Perfect - the guesthouse is located in the corner of a cul de sac, meaning it is devoid of nighttime noise. It is also a mere stone's throw from the bustling weekend night market, a well-stocked supermarket, the train station, and some decent-enough restaurants. The week-day night market is a bit further afield, but still reachable on foot.More
