“Lovely hidden gem of a place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2013

Really enjoyed looking around this castle, love the slightly isolated nature of it. Very well preserved and excellent, comprehensive details about the history of the castle and how it's structure changed over the years! Also loved the shop!! - Very friendly, helpful staff and excellent selection of unusual wines/liquors - ginger, strawberry etc - delicious!!

“OFF THE BEATEN TRACK”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

Aydon Castle is a great example of a fortified manor house and well worth a visit even thought it is off the beaten track. If you like your history then make sure you visit this place.

Atmospheric, beautiful little castle!
Enjoyed looking around this fabulous little castle, picking apples in the orchard, icecream sat on the grass, walking round in the lovely wooded area with stream, running alongside the castle, like a fairy dell, perfect for picnics!

“Hidden gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

This medieval Manor House was use as a farm until the 1960's.
It is remarkably well preserved and well worth a visit. It is quite small and at the end of a 2 mile drive on a narrow road but is worth the effort as you can imagine what it was like in the past. There is space to have a picnic. It also has a small shop and toilets. It is on two floors all of which can easily be reached.
It is an English Heritage site with a small entrance fee. I would suggest that you allow up to an hour to visit. Unlike most E.H. sites it has a roof so can be visited in wet weather.
This is a real gem of a site.

“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2012

Aydon castle is a medieval fortified house, occupied as a farm house until the 1960s and now stripped back to reveal the unaltered medieval structure. I think I would have liked more photos of how it used to look inside before it was stripped back (there is just a victorian staircase and some windows as a clue, plus you can see where boarded floors have been taken out) and/or some furniture to show how rooms would have been used in medieval times, but it is a fascinating and atmospheric place. Had an odd experience when I heard music in the courtyard, is it haunted? Anyway, I really enjoyed visiting and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in old houses and/or castles. It's quite unique.
