“Very friendly staff, good hotel”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

The best in this hotel is the extremely friendly staff. The manager welcomes you and after dinner the cook comes to every table and asks if you like the food. Also the waiters are very friendly.
The rooms in the new part are quite ok, nothing special, but ok.
For me the only drawback is the food. It is ok, no question. But I don't come to Sri Lanka to eat meat balls with potato ;)
Even the Sri Lanka food is not spicy. But the quality is good so don't be afraid. The bread was toasted in advance and very dry. I mentioned this to the manager and he will stay a toast machine in the breakfast room... we will see :)
Overall it is a good Hotel and I enjoyed both nights.

Room Tip: The new part with the white rooms. The old ones (red carpet) are not so nice.

This was a basic hotel with a good sized room with TV but no air con. The overall impression of the hotel was a bit run down. The welcome was nice with tea and biscuits and the food at the buffet dinner was relatively good. The main problem was the noise as the room overlooked the main road and temple and it wasn't particularly clean.

No free wifi; paid 100 rupees for what was supposed to be 3 hours. The WiFi stopped working at exactly 2 hours.

No AC in room, no fan, and no screens on the windows. Thankfully it was raining when we were there so it wasn't overly hot. The carpet in my room was dark, had ripples, and did not look clean. My room was against the street so it was noisy. The shower head was in the middle of the tub, not at the end. Taking a shower was without having water go everywhere was a challenge. No safe in the room.

Dinner and breakfast buffets had good food and service.

Arrived Bandarawela by train from Pattipola with Exodus tour. 5 minute walk from train station up the hill past the Post Office, the Mosque, and Buddha statue.

Warmly welcomed with butter cake and tea upon arrival. Shown to room #345, a corner triple room with king bed and 1 single. Room is carpeted (only one on our entire trip in Sri Lanka) and had windows on 2 sides, making cross-ventilation wonderful! Bath amenities were shampoo and shower gel. No washcloths. Bathroom had tub and shower. Shower water controls located VERY high up on the wall. Powerful shower! 2 free bottles of water daily. Free wifi in 30 minute sessions. No air con in room, but not needed due to climate of Bandarawela. No fridge or kettle for coffee/tea. Hair dryer can be borrowed from reception upon check-in. No pool, either, but who needs it? Friendly staff, especially the room boys.

New building rooms have terraces. Nice beer garden and restaurant/lounge.

Short walk down the hill to "downtown" area where you'll find several grocery stores/Cargill's, and lots of other shops including tea shops. Be curious and go in and let them show you what they have! I bought a 250gram bag of #1 Tea Dust for 150 rupees. They also sell leaf tea.

We ate at Buhary Hotel in downtown. Highly recommended! Friendly waiters who speak English. Mr. K.M. Ashraff is an excellent cook!

This hotel is one of the nicest in town. Breakfast was also good. If I return to Bandarawela, I would stay here.

Room Tip: New wing rooms have a terrace you can sit out on. Room #345 (main wing) is a triple and has cross-ve...

I have stayed at the Orient many times but quite some time back, in all my visits I enjoyed the Hospitality they offered, the rooms are more colonial, but very clean and comfy, the food is excellent, and the staff are very friendly. The Manager is a very nice person and very flexible too. It’s in the heart of Bandarawela Town, and makes it and easy access to go anywhere.

Room Tip: the rooms at the corner of teh Hallway are the best, the ones with t eh poster beds.

We stayed one night at the Orient, after spending a night at the Pippet Gap campsite, owned by the management of the hotel in the hills. They immediately made our rooms available to us so that we could freshen up and, after experiencing a lot of timid showers elsewhere in Sri Lamka, these were a DELIGHT! In our one night, I had three showers! The climate is considered to be perfect in Bandarawela, and they don't have too many bugs so they don't have a/c in the hotel, but we did find it a little stuffy and we did get a bit munched by mosquitoes when we had the balcony doors open. Cable TV in the rooms was a treat and we could catch up with the Olympic action back home!

The chef gave us a cookery lesson as we were keen amateurs - even the boys enjoyed helping prepare supper! Food was good and we enjoyed a fun evening with cocktails at the Karaoke bar.

Manger shook us warmly by the hand when we left- possibly the size of the bar bill helped! But he and his staff were all great. Recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new wing. They are apparently better than the others.

On our trip we spent one night in this hotel. It appeared we were the only guests for that day.
The room was nice and clean with a good size terrace we did not use.No AC however and that was a small problem because this was the only hotel were i had to hunt down the mosquito's (4) before going to bed.
Impressed with the staff.
The cook made a very nice evening dinner that we really enjoyed. All fresh from the market.
Location not impressive but nice hotel to explore the surrounding countryside.
A walk in the town is some experience in the evening when the market starts. Very few tourists in June so you tend to get some attention from the local people, but in a nice way...
