We spent the first night of a trip to Italy (April, 2005) at this wonderful castle. We had such a lovely experience viewing the winery, talking with the owners, and drinking wine and eating appetizers (provided by other guests who had stayed there before) beneath the beautiful trees. Our family of five stayed in Roncade 3, which was not luxurious but had lots of space and lots of character. It was an easy walk down the street to any of several good restaurants. This was one of the most memorable experiences of a trip that included so many fabulous places; we only wished we'd planned to stay there longer.

We've just come back from a stay at the fantastic Castello di Roncade. This place is not a hotel as such but a working castle and vineyard which lets out some of its rooms and appartments.

We stayed only one night as we were heading to Venice for the weekend but I would recommend it to anybody visiting the area, particularly those looking for a special place to stay.

The wine produced at Castello di Roncade is just great. They do a great Merlot, prosecco and a couple of white varieties. The owner organsised an impromptu wine tasting with some other guests. Wine, bread and cold meats were provided! The wine starts at €3.00 per bottle which coming from London is a real bargain. We bought a few bottles.

The best thing about this place is the friendliness of the family. Claudio, the son, picked us up from the airport and made us feel really welcome. His dad organised the wine tasting for us.

The only bad comment about the place is that we booked a particular appartment (the Patriarca) in the main building but got another appartment in one of the adjacent buildings. As we were only staying one night, it didn't matter as the whole experience was great.

Roncade is a tiny town, but there are a couple of great restaurants including 'El Grillo' (not sure about the spelling, sorry) in the high street. Also for €1.60 you can jump on the bus to the medieval town of Treviso (20 minutes away) and spend a few hours there. Treviso is the home town of Benetton, the italian fashion house.

Guests can easily get to Venice by taking the bus to Treviso and the train from the station behind the bus depot. It's very cheap and easy!

All in all, a great place to stay.
