“Nice place for a short break”
Reviewed December 3, 2007

Just back from a weekend at the Errigal which we booked at short notice, mainly because of the reviews here (our other option received awful reviews here so I cancelled).

Thankfully we weren't disappointed. The staff were friendly and efficient (special mention to those working in the restaurant on Saturday night - despite being incredibly busy they were attentive and did all they could for us and we were not kept waiting) and the bedroom was a good size and very clean. It's a shame that there is no swimming pool as the weather was atrocious and there wasn't much to do in the surrounding area, but that's a minor quibble. As for the food - breakfast was excellent, the bar food (as mentioned by others) is definitely overpriced and could benefit from some seasoning and fresh herbs/spices, and dinner in the restaurant was of a high standard.

Two pieces of advice tho: (1) do not use the hotel website directions - we got quite lost and it took us at least an extra hour to get there; and (2) book directly with the hotel by phone because otherwise there is an outrageous €15 credit card charge when booking online.

This quiet, lovely, rural property was the perfect antidote to two hectic days and nights in Dublin.

We arrived about 11 pm, the hotel arrangement having been kindly made for us by the staff at the Crystal in Cavan. There was some confusion about the arrangement, as we wanted two twin beds and all the hotel had left were rooms with one double. The manager graciously gave us an extra room - at no additional cost.

The property itself is very new and our rooms were spacious, clean, and well maintained. My room had a coffee/tea maker and even some biscuits (cookies) - a nice treat after a full day of driving.

The hotel has a very nice bar where we felt comfortable having a late night drink. The hotel bartender, Nile, was gracious and genial.

We had the full Irish breakfast the next morning and everything was more than satisfactory.

If I were going to be in the Cavan area again, I would definitely stay at the Errigal.

My wife and I had our wedding reception at the Errigal Hotel - so we stayed in the Bridal suit. We also had about 22 rooms booked out for family and friends.

We found the hotel excellent and they catered for all our needs. Ann Marie, the hotel manager, is an excellent host and it meant we could sit back and enjoy the day.

In terms of the actual hotel. All our friends said what a good hotel is was. All the rooms were spacious with all the mod cons you would expect. The restaurant is probably above average in price but the food is excellent - I do believe they have won awards for the food there. If you don't want to pay restaurant prices then have a meal/snack in the bar - again excellent quality.

Another food place worth mentioning if you don't want to eat at the hotel is Murph's in Cootehill on the main shopping street. We had a meal there and it was very very nice indeed!

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night over the May bank holiday weekend. The hotel location is wonderful set amongst rolling countryside.just a 5 minute drive from Cootehill.

We were upgraded to a Lodge on arrival, the reason being a very large wedding was in progress. In the evening we were thankful for this, as we were not disturbed by the 'craic' and general merriment of the Wedding guests.

The Lodge was a new house in the grounds, wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and very private, yet close to the main hotel.

We did not have dinner in the hotel, having looked at the menu, we thought it was bad value for money re choice offered. We had seen a lovely pub/restaurent called 'The Stray Sod' on the Cavan Rd about a 6 minute drive from the hotel. We had drinks, main course and dessert for half of what we would have paid in the hotel!!

We visited Cavan town and also nearby Lough Annagh which was beautiful. All in all a very pleasant mini-break.

Stayed for 2 nights in February while visiting family. The rooms are very impressive for a 3-star hotel and are bigger than most 4-star hotels, with very contemporary decor and well appointed bathrooms. The only oddity was that the bed was a standard double and not king size as is normal these days pretty well everywhere.
As other reviewers have noted, the staff are very pleasant and friendly, though our dining experience wasn't as good as some. We had dinner in the restaurant one night - my partner's steak was great but my scallops were bland and rubbery. I suppose I should know better than to order shellfish in a landlocked county!!
Overall I'd really recommend the Errigal if you are in the area.

myself and husband recently stayed at this hotel with our toddler daughter......staff were very friendly, the food was absolutely gorgeous, especially the bar food, the only thing is the location were you would need a car to get to places...we stayed 2 nights and on the both nights there was a wedding, so we did have to listen to the music into the wee hours...luckily we were a bit away from the function room, we will definately be going back to this hotel......
