Wine Tasting at McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills
Ranked #37 of 100 things to do in Adelaide Hills

The McLaren Vale wine area is not publicised as much as the Barossa but I think it's nicer with the hills in the background and the sea close by.
Some great wineries and the township itself has lots to see and do.

We spent last weekend in Adelaide and decided to do a tour of the McLaren Vale wine region. Having done some big, boozy Barossa bus tours we were really hoping for something very different in this region.
A friend recommended the Prime Mini Tours http://primeminitours.com/tours and we were happy to find they offered a McLaren Vale Premium Food & Wine Experience (for only $115 pp). It was STUNNING. It was basically a tour of four wineries with huge platters of food served at each winery. All local produce the food was selected to compliment the wines (or vice versa). Our tour guide David was really knowledgeable and friendly and gave us plenty of time to sample and purchase wines. He even threw in a stop at the Willunga Farmers Market.
All in all it was a relaxing, fun day, with excellent value for money.

My wife and I snuck away for a long weekend recently to McLaren Vale and we enjoyed it immensely.
The highlight of our trip was a chauffered winery tour with Richard from R&M Transit Tours. For 5 hours we were chauffered around McLaren Vale in a Statesman and given a good overview of the area and its wineries. This was so relaxing, just the 2 of us and we could go wherever we liked instead of being in a group sticking to an itinerary. We managed to squeeze in 7 wineries (Richard told us he had never squeezed 7 into 1 day!) and it was great not worrying about driving. Also very reasonably priced. (approx $270 for 5hrs). Cannot recommend it enough!
The wineries we visited were:
Wirra Wirra, amazing wines and fantastic cellar door. The atmosphere is great and the staff very knowledgeable. Also large picnic area where you can bring your own food and enjoy their wines.
Rosemount, not as busy as most, but had nice wines and a great art exhibition in one of the cellars.
D'arenberg also very nice and had a great restaurant to stop and snack at along the way, great view overlooking all the vineyards.
Coriole was a very busy little winery. Wines were nice but they really need to extend the cellar door, very crowded. Great little restaurant/cafe also.
Maxwell, great wines (and Mead) and a fantastic location. The cellar door overlooks the winery below through large glass windows. Beautiful restaurant also but was not open when we visited.
Fox Creek, great little cellar door and beautiful grounds. Once again, delicious wines.
Ekhidna was our last stop for the day. Beautiful spot and is a winery aswell as a micro-brewery and restaurant. A cleansing ale or 2 at the end of the day was just what I needed!
None of the wineries we visited had tasting fees (except for the 'top shelf' wines).
These are just a few of the MANY wineries in the area and we would love to get back there someday soon to try some more. Once again, R&M Transit Tours are fantastic and can cater for 1 to 4 people in a chauffered car or a group on a mini bus.
A McLaren Vale winery tour is a must if you are visiting Adelaide (and if you live there). Loved it.
