Having visited Beer on many occasions we chose to return en route back to our hotel in Sidmouth. We stopped at the Captains Cottage in the late afternoon and chose to have a cream tea for two. Delicious scones with cream and jam and a cafetiere of rich coffee as an alternative to tea. We sat at the side of the cottage watching the world go by. We were slightly surprised that this outlet closes early, when clearly there were hundreds of people still in Beer who could have enjoyed both the excellent service and delicious food. I would recommend a stop off at the Captains Cottage if you are passing.

All I can say is the mini hot scones, lashing of creme and jam and a very nice cup of tea served on some very stylish blue & white china just left us wanting more! Definitely one of the best places, as far we've experienced, to get a Devon Cream Tea!

Also, the environment is very.... unusual. In a good way of course, it's as if you're actually sitting at the front of someone's house and all of the lovely quirky ornaments, furniture etc. are for sale!

A great place for your Cream Tea fix, especially if you want to buy a mantle clock too!

We walked from Beer to branscombe to visit the Masons Arms, only to be told we were five minutes too late for food! Exhausted and disappointed staff gave us directions to a tea shop in branscombe village, we trudged off, but never did find the tea shop. So back over the almost vertical cliff walk! to Beer. Now we hot, hungry and annoyed, as well as exhausted and disappointed. A visit to the captains cottage soon remedied that. Yes, it might have been a bit disorganised at times, but we had the most tasty sandwiches, served on delicious bread, with a side salad, and the largest pot of tea I have ever seen. Some restaurants would expect it to serve half a dozen people. We were very thirsty though, and soon downed a couple of the super sized cups filled with tea. We also had a slice of lemon drizzle cake, which was sublime, so lemony and tangy. In fact the whole meal was so good we went out of our way to visit again the next day, and it was just as good then too. A proper no frills, but quaint, English tea shop, serving delicious food.
