We stayed at Durham House for 3 nights at the end of August. Although we arrived early we were lucky to be greeted by Shelly (who was very welcoming), and shown to our room.

Our room, at the back of the house was a bit of an odd shape - sort of long and narrow(ish), but it was very clean and tidy, with the bonus of a newly fiited en suite with shower.
Nice to have a proper window too instead of just an extractor fan !

We were given a parking permit for the main carpark - just 2 minutes walk - so no problem.Beer itself is a lovely town, very pretty with flowers and hanging baskets outside many hotels and shops.A good choice of pubs and restaurants all on the doorstep.( The Anchor Inn has really good food.)

The bed was VERY comfortable, the seagulls will make sure you don't sleep late though !

Breakfast was good too with a choice of something different from the usual - nothing wrong with the Full English mind !

We walked to Seaton and did the tram run up to Colyton - made a nice change. Next day, we walked in the other direction to Branscombe and had a good Sunday lunch in the Masons Arms.
The simple pleasures of life - and why not ?
Reccommended.

Dear hywel_smith
Thank you for our great review on tripadvisor. It is fab that you had such a good stay with us.
We do get lots of comments on the sleep quality and I am glad that you found your bed so comfortable - you will not have a relaxing break if you don't sleep well - sorry we can't sort out the seagulls though!
We have also put a lot of thought and effort into creating an exciting breakfast menu for guests -with several choices away from the usual cooked fare.
As you mentioned Beer is a beautiful village which is well cared for by the local community.
Shelley and I hope you come back to enjoy it with us again.
Many thanks
Kind regards
Martin

What a wonderful place. I normally do not like B and B's . I prefer to keep myself to myself, come and go as I please, eat breakfast on my own table etc etc. I think you get the gist. But this place was wonderful. Simple check in! Shelley (I think) was really nice. Gave us the keys and a car park pass, took us to our room and asked us if we knew Beer. The room on the second floor was lovely. Very shabby chic and very comfortable. We both agreed that we could simply stay there all night and watch TV. However, we went out to experience the delights of Beer.

Breakfast in the morning was great. We had our own table and the food was beautiful. We had the full English and Eggs Benedict with bacon. The eggs were wonderful and full English was cooked to perfection with no grease at all. We were not rushed or pressured and it was a delight to have Shelley's daughter take the order. Nice touch.

Simple check out. Just handed over the keys and cheque and said our goodbyes.

Cannot fault anything about this place. Clean, comfy, great food and non-intrusive owners. Thoroughly recommend. And very reasonable too!!!

Dear PeteBFC
Thank you so much for your great review. Wow what can I say - it is just so brilliant to get something written like that about Durham House. Shelley and I really try to make guests feel welcome and relaxed and hope the rooms help to convey this.
Our daughter's waitress training is a bit hit and miss but hopefully the training will pay off!
Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you here again in the future.
Kind regards

We booked into Durham House last minute on the recommendation of family - we certainly were very lucky. The Durham House is perfectly situated in the beautiful village of Beer - free parking is a short walk around the corner. From reservations over the phone to service at Breakfast, they really do pride themselves on friendly and warm service here. With a young family they are honest about the fact that you may well be left to your own devices but with a quick call they hurry back if required.
We stayed in a room right at the top of Durham House, the room was an excellent size, lovely decor and great facilities. The rooms were a perfect temperature and with plenty of fresh air and views from the large windows. The bathroom facilities were perfect too.
I cant say much about the breakfast that hasnt already been said - essentially its brilliant!

Durham House is an excellent choice to stay in Beer- great service, great facilities and great price!

It is lovely when guests write such amazing responses to their stay with us. Shelley and I have tried to create the right 'feel' about Durham House and although it is hard to completely satisfy everyones needs when we receive a review like it makes us feel like we are getting things right.
Thank you so much for staying with us and hopefully we will see you again.

Not sure I would call Durham House a hotel, but its certainly a B&B with all that you could ask for. There is no parking on site so we emptied our luggage into the hall and then parked the car nearby using the free car park pass. The entrance to the house is very attractive, with an original tiled porch, and a fantastic tiled floor in the hall, also there are original stained glass windows in the hall, the dining room and one of the upstairs bedrooms. I feel this really adds to the character of the place. The carpets looked new to me, and everywhere was clean and fresh. We were greeted my Martin who helped us up with our luggage, but if the owners are out they leave a note for you with instructions (and parking pass presumably).

We had a comfy bed, it was a long narrowish room, so not loads of space beside the bed, but a very spacious area at the bottom of the bed with wardrobe and chairs, and a small table, and a dressing table as well. Again all the bedding and carpet looked new and very clean. The shower room was bright and modern, with a good corner power shower, one with a head that slides up and down which I find so much more convienient that the fixed type.
The room had no view, but was at the back of the B&B so it was quiet and we slept really well. The information pack in the room is very helpful with ideas for where to go and where to eat (we chose Steamers for our evening meal which was excellent and only a couple of minutes walk away).
Breakfast was all ordered at the table, the hot food was particularly good, eggs benedict was my favourite.
We would definitely like to stay here again, I found the B&B suited us well, and it was less that half the price of the hotels we stayed in on this holiday, where we were probably paying for facilities we didnt use. We did have decent weather though, there are no public areas to sit if the weather was bad.
Beer is a lovely little village, with a steeply shelving pebbly beach that was busy with holiday makers going out on boats and playing in the sea, and plenty of walks if you are feeling energetic.

Dear Herewardtw
Just a few lines to thank you for staying at Durham House and posting us a lovely review.
Although Durham House was once a small private hotel we are in fact a guest house(unfortunately we are still often referred to as a hotel due to postal reference etc. which can be misleading for guests). We do not offer many facilities that a hotel can but we invested a great deal to try to make guests feel welcome and relaxed. Nearly all of our rooms have two chairs and a table so that guests have a place to sit - even if the weather turns bad !
As you mentioned we have a great location for exploring the village. We do not have sea views but our rooms are on the whole very quiet - far enough away from any musical events etc. that may be on in the village but still only 150 yards away from the beach and the main throng of the seagulls!
We are continually upgrading our rooms and it was great that you found yours so clean and fresh and the bed comfortable to sleep on.
Breakfast is another area we have really tried to offer guests something more than just 'a full English' (though we are told this is very good too!) so again it was great that you found the Eggs Benedict to your liking.
Thanks again for staying with us and for writing such a positive review and
Shelley and I look forward to welcoming you back to Durham House again in the future.
Kind regards
Martin

For starters you cannot ask for a better location than Beer. It is a beautiful small town with lots of walks, fantastic beach and lovely people. We have stayed in Beer and Lyme Regis most years whilst camping but this year we decided to up the anti and stay in a hotel. And what a hotel it is. The rooms are cleaned every day with fresh towels at your disposal, each room has a TV and some even have a DVD player (which is great as the shop opposite sells rental DVDs to anyone staying there). The rooms are decorated lovely and the bathroom put ours at home to shame!! On top of that, tea coffee and toffee's are refilled each day in your room.

Now on to the main highlight of the hotel...the breakfast!! For starters you could have fresh melon, cereals or toast with orange or apple juice. For mains you could have eggs Benedict, french cinnamon toast, full fry up or you could specify your own versions of whats on offer. All meals came with lots of fresh fruit and ample amounts of tea and coffee. Plus refill of toast throughout the meal. The hotel and staff were very friendly and welcoming from beginning to end. I cannot praise the hotel enough, it really made our holiday one to remember, each morning we knew we would wake up to beautiful scenery, wonderful breakfast and a fresh start to the day. What more could you want from a holiday?!

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are quieter as the first floor rooms are above the main kitchen and you ca...

Stayed for three nights the rooms were very clean and comfortable, the choice and food quality at breakfast was excellent.
Room was very quiet - not even seagulls to disturb us.
Right in the village, short 2 minutes stroll to the beach.
Friendly welcome from Martin.
Big coincidence that one of the staff came from Leeds and recoginsed my wife!
