We had simply the most relaxing weekend at Crockerton House. Chris and Enid (the owners could not have been more accommodating). The breakfast was perfect - freshly brewed coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and the bread is almost fresh out of the oven. Afternoon tea with perfectly baked scones couldn't have been nicer. We couldn't recommend this place more.

My wife and I stayed here on 8th May 2010, our wedding day.
I stayed with my brother and sister and their other halves the night before.

They undoubtedly have a very beautiful home, however we / I felt very disappointed by some aspects of our stay.
The house and room were great.
Our bathroom in the silk room had a few problems.
Firstly the flush on the toilet was very weak / ineffectual.
Secondly the shower was also weak, and 'thready', with no screen or curtain, leading to a very wet floor.

These however minor points.

My biggest disappointment relates to attitude.
On the morning of our wedding I was finalising my speech and generally preparing myself.
A nervous time. It then came as an unwelcome surprise that Enid said I needed to leave my room at 11am, so it could be cleaned.
She said I could have 30 minutes more, and then at 1130 was very abrupt and demanded that I leave the room. There was no note of conciliation, and no manners.

Again, this is something I would have overlooked, on it's own.

The moment that we felt especially galling was when the entire party were practically hounded from the house at a few minutes after 1100, the day after our wedding, having been told this was check out time. Again tact, manners and understanding were totally lacking.
My new wife was told to leave the house, into the rain outside, carrying her wedding dress. She was very upset.
This was despite no other guests arriving on that day.
This total lack of hospitality and understanding was astounding, especially considering we were guests paying £135 per night.

In short we felt that we were staying at Crockerton solely on their terms, with no regard to our needs.
We felt that considering the price for each room, well in excess of £100, the specification of the bathrooms was poor and the attitude we encountered was inhospitable at best, and thoroughly rude at worst.

This is a 'luxury' B&B, with price tag to match. Considering the price we thought it poor value for money. We expected more.

We will certainly not be recommending Crockerton to anyone, especially when considering so many family and friends had a wonderful experience with many nearby B&Bs and hotels.

We were surprised and saddened to learn of the groom's disappointment, especially almost a month after his stay when no complaints were made at the time.

This is our fourth season and we have not received any other complaints about the bathroom in The Silk Room. The shower is built into an alcove so there is no need for a screen or curtain, and the wall unit and shower head have three settings. It is a pity he did not ask us so we could help with the controls.

Access is required to service rooms between 10.30 and 12.30 when our housekeeper comes in. We delayed from 11 to about 11.45 and the groom finished his speech in the lounge.

Latest checkout is 11am and our guests were certainly not 'hounded out'. We had other guests in that night and his sister-in-law did not leave till about 11.30. I offered to carry the bride's dress and she was welcome to wait in the lounge.

Normally we do not take children but because they had booked all three rooms, made a special excepton and accepted the baby to help out.

We were flexible and believe our rate of £119 (not £135) offered good value; also do not think we were inhospitable or rude.

We are glad he thinks we 'undoubtedly have a very beautiful home' and 'the house and room are great'.

We have just returned from a two night stay at Crockerton House, having booked directly by telephone with the owners. Enid and Christopher's home is delightful, it is tastefully decorated and furnished. We stayed in the Heytesbury Suite, a large light room with its own bathroom and separate toilet. The room was spotlessly clean, tea and coffee making facilities (fresh coffee and cafetiere), water and fruit are prov ided. Lovely thick towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. The weather was kind to us and we had complimentary tea and home made cake in the garden on the day of arrival. Enid prepared dinner for us at Crockerton House on our first evening, and although Crockerton House is not licenced Christopher and Enid are happy for you to bring your own wine.

We enjoyed a three course dinner and coffee which was delicious. Breakfast on both mornings was excellent, fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit salad, a selection of cereals, and a cooked breakfast with organic ingredients, beautifully cooked on the Aga by Enid. On the 2nd evening we enjoyed a lovely meal at the Bath Arms which is just a short stroll away, although we would have been content to spend another evening at Crockerton House, it is such a lovely place to spend your time.

Christopher and Enid were very attentive hosts and are happy to help with any sightseeing or local information.

We can thoroughly recommend Crockerton House, we took the opportunity to look at the other two bedrooms and we would be happy to stay in any of the rooms should we visit again in the future, they are all lovely.

A relaxing and enjoyable stay in a beautiful home.

We stayed at Crockerton house for only one night, (27th June) but wished we could have stayed longer. We are already planning a return trip.
The house is located in glorious gardens, and is well situated for visits to Longleat and Stour head, (National Trust) and not far from the city of Bath.
Initial booking contact was by telephone, and Chris clearly outlined the options. We elected to stay in "The Officer's Room" with private bathroom. A confirmation arrived by post the next day.
On arrival, we were met and shown to our room. It was spacious, well furnished, the bed very comfy and the attention to detail outstanding... Fresh flowers, a bottle of water, a bowl of Organic fruit, many choices of tea and real (not instant) coffee, and fresh milk.
The bathroom was spotless, and two towelling robes were available. Towels were on a towel warmer....
We had arrived in time for tea, and real, loose-leaf tea was served, with Tea bread and cake, all home-made. It was possible to have this in either the guest lounge, or in the Garden.
We later had dinner at the Bath Arms public house, about half a mile away, an easy walk, where we enjoyed an excellent meal.
A peaceful night followed, and we slept well.
Breakfast was served in the dining room... help yourself to fresh fruit salad, and three or so choices of cereal, freshly squeezed orange juice, water and tea (loose leaf) / coffee. A cooked breakfast consisted of Bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, tomato and mushrooms, all top quality ingredients. Home-made jam / marmalade accompanied the choice of toast, and more toast was happily provided when we asked for it.
The emphasis at this property is quality and attention to detail, and we left feeling very content.

Crockerton House is a well situated quality B&B for those guests seeking a very comfortable base for Longleat and the numerous attractions of Wessex. We have just returned from a 2 night stay -

1. The House and grounds are lovely, the property is a period gem.
2. The room we stayed in was very well appointed, with very comfy bed, tea making facilities, plenty of space, TV, ironing board etc. We opted for the non-en suite room and whilst the bathroom/WC was located down the hallway we didn't find this too much of a convenience. The bathroom was ours to use and was NOT shared.
3. The breakfast is organically prepared. We believe local produce - this may not meet with everyone's taste but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
4. The hosts were very friendly and very efficient. We like our privacy when we stay anywhere and I have to say that on too many occassions we have suffered at the hands of over zealous hosts wanting to please you at all cost - Crockerton House is different, you will be served and be asked if everything meets with your satisfaction - you will then be left alone - we liked that!
5. Afternoon tea on arrival - a great touch, especially as we could enjoy this in the garden.

Overall we enjoyed our stay - if you after a cheap B&B that engorges your delights for great British breakfast piled high then this is not the B&B for you. If however you are a culture addict and want to taste life in a superbly refurbished period setting then this might well be the B& B you are looking for...quiet, tranquil and peaceful...

My partner and I stayed one night at Crockerton House - a Wolsey Lodge B&B - in April 2007.

House/gardens - The house is newly and very tastefully decorated and the B&B only opened in Jan 2007. The lawns and big organic veg garden
are also very nice. Hostess is a very keen gardener (they are hoping to be able to to provide all their own veg later in the year).

Location - Easy to find as it's the biggest house on Crockerton Green, a few metres back from the main road. There's some traffic noise but it's not too bad. House used to be part of Longleat estate so most visitors are staying in order to visit Longleat.

Hosts - Christopher is very keen to please ... slightly nervy disposition. He takes the bookings, welcomes guests, carries luggage and serves breakfast. A nice chap. Enid stays out of the way - gardening and cooking organic delights on her Aga. However, she is definitely the boss....

Room - Nice room with very comfy bed, flat screen TV, kettle etc. Bathroom and separate toilet were down the hall - this wasn't made clear before we arrived so we were a little surprised. Shower was tempramental and you could get burnt if not careful.

Brekky - When Enid asked how I would like my eggs, I asked for boiled
and was told firmly that she does not 'do' boiled eggs and I could only have scrambled/fried/poached. Scambled it was then (v. nice too). Ketchup was also a big 'no no' ( they didn't have any - too common?) when we asked for that. The cooked English breakfast was v. nice but not v. big .... much emphasis on 'organic' and 'home made' but little emphasis on making the B&B homely, catering to your needs,
making you feel relaxed etc. You were definitely there on the owners'
terms - regulation 1 mini-slice of white toast and 1 mini-slice of brown ("all home made by Enid"). No more was offered. The sausages were literally just over an inch long each - no doubt all the rage with the organic 'local food' in crowd, but not v filling for a special brekky on a weekend away. We dared not ask for Marmite for fear we would be ejected for being common perhaps. Only home made jam
was on offer. That's ok but it's not good to be scared of your hostess is it? When they had finished serving us (whilst we were still eating), the hatch to the kitchen was slammed shut and we were left to our own devices. We were relieved.

Overall - Expensive, house/gardens lovely to look at but not good value for money (£102/night for cheapest room). Better suited to older people I would suggest.

Hint - Wouldn't recommend eating supper at Crockerton House (offered @ £28/person, bring your own wine) ... we ate at the Bath Arms in Crockteron village - really fantastic meal and service, only 15mins walk away, great value (£51 inc. beer + wine).

We tried to make their stay as enjoyable as possible and our response is as follows:

1. We are set back behing the village green about 40 metres from the main road with little traffic at night
2. Our offer, confirmation and brochure stated that the room has ‘an adjacent private bathroom with bath and walk-in shower, and separate WC
3. The shower is thermostatically controlled and we have not received any complaints
4. Brown sauce was accepted as an alternative to ketchup
5. Extra toast is always offered
6. Marmalade is provided as well as jam
7. The hatch was closed to give them privacy (not ‘slammed’)
8. Afternoon tea was also included and gluten-free cakes specially baked
9. On leaving they asked to see the dearer en suite bedrooms because they said they were hoping to return
