“An idyllic oasis”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Idyllic; isolated; relaxed; oasis: all describe the amazing guest lodge that Frank and Daniela continue to run in the Portuguese Alentejo. I last visited nearly 20 years ago. Going back somewhere always runs the risk that it will not be quite as good as you remember but it is even better. It's difficult to add anything to the existing reviews. They are all entirely accurate. Just go!

Room Tip: They are all terrific

Once you have navigated your way along the 4km track for the first time you are immediately struck by the perfect isolation of the Quinta. We were greeted by a Nightingale singing in the garden and wonderful views of the lake.

This is indeed paradise and we were quickly made welcome by Daniela and Frank. Our room was lovely and comfortable, but if you are looking for luxury go the Algarve coast with everyone else!

Superb meals prepared by Daniela were taken "en famille" with the family, staff and other guests. This was a relaxing and really enjoyable time to catch up with the highlights of the days activities of the other guests.

If you are a birdwatcher or have just a keen interest in birds this is the place to come. Frank McClintock's knowledge and enthusiasm is second to none and whilst we are relative novices he was very patient and helpful. The bird watching trip to the Plains is highly recommended and was an unforgettable highlight of our holiday. Hopefully we will go back one day!

For once the advance publicity isn't let down by the actual experience - this is a lovely place to stay, whether you just want to chill out or, like us, you're on an organised bird-watching trip. Everything gets top marks - as one should expect here, the cabin-style rooms are not 5-star luxury but they are very comfortable and well-equipped and just right for the location.
If you're driving here, as the track from the road winds up, down and around, best to make you first trip in in daylight (particularly as you'll immediately be rewarded by the lovely views)!

Many places promise paradise and disappoint. This is the real thing. 4km down a private road you step from your car into terraced, landscaped gardens that lead down to a lake. Flowering shrubs surround you and bird song fills the air. Daniela welcomes you with home cooked food that is absolutely delicious and owes much to the local sourcing of ingredients. Here is a place to escape from the bustle of the Algarve, so near yet so far away. Peace and tranquility are the keynotes of this special place. It is emphatically not just a hotel. You are part of the community while you are there, sharing meals with family and other guests and able to take advice as to what you do. You can just relax in the gardens, read, write, paint or compose. For absolute relaxation book one of Daniela's massages, which can make your stresses just float away. There is the lake for swimming, canoeing or sailing if you are experienced. Guides to local walks in the shady valleys are available. You could take your car to historic attractions like Monchique.
But of course the main attraction, that brings visitors from half way round the world, is the bird watching. Frank McClintock is a rightly renowned expert, with over 25 years' experience in the region. I went and was astonished at the wealth of his knowledge. His infectious enthusiasm is so great that he managed to enable even a relative novice like myself see a magnificent variety of species. The many repeat visitors are testimony to the very special qualities that Frank and Daniela have created here. I can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: The ones on the terrace have verandas with flowering jasmine and views of the lake

We went to Quinta do Barraco to chill out after a hectic time. Perfect in every sense. Welcoming, relaxed, beautiful surroundings - it really is paradise. We went early in May, when the flowers were out, but the clear, mozzy-free lake was very swimmable even though the days were comfortably warm, not hot.
Excellent food and wine, and attentive hosts Frank and Daniella.
Only an hour or so's drive from Faro Airport. Can't fault it

Room Tip: if you want total privacy, book a "honeymoon suite"

Frank and Daniela's haven of peace and quiet cannot truly be described, you have to be there!! The knowledge of the man himself is staggering, and the locations of various species are all well researched, so hopefully giving you success. The rooms are perfect for the location and remain cool to return to. The food provided is varied and enjoyed by all guests. What more can I say, only that it will a pleasure to return and renew the friendship, and of course see more birds!!

Room Tip: In this location all 10 rooms are much the same.
