“Fantastic start to our Headwater walking holiday”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

From the moment Frank met us at the railway station we knew we were going to enjoy ourselves. On the journey back to the Quinta, Frank was cheerful, chatty and informative. The Quinta itself is in a beautiful spot, overlooking the water, with gardens cascading down to the waters edge. Our room was lovely, with a wood burning fire (which was helpful to dry clothes after a very wet walk!), the bedrooms don't have all the extras of a 5* chain type hotel but we were there for the walking, birds, wildlife etc and not for a hair dryer! The meals with Frank, Danielle and family were great fun (you all eat as 'family') and delicious, with good Portugese wines.
The Quinta is remote, don't go if you like the roar of traffic, little containers of shampoo etc, do go if you enjoy beautiful surroundings, great company, good food and wine. Enjoy!

Room Tip: All rooms are on the ground floor and face the lake with an outside sitting area. We stayed in a fam...

This is a really remote getaway - don't try finding it for the first time in the dark! The unpaved track into the Quinta seems endless but provides fantastic views. The atmosphere created by Frank, Daniella and family is very warm and welcoming & we appreciated the roaring fire as the weather was a little disappointing. We had a fantastic day birdwatching, which gave us great views of the locality aswell as exciting bird viewing and all kinds of interesting information on the countryside from Frank. My only comment is that it would be nice if there were a few local restaurants - the nearest ones are almost an hours drive away! but we had a couple of lovely meals at the Quinta with interesting Portuguese wines. It is just over an hour to the Algarve or to the West Coast, with fantastic beaches at both locations, It is the kind of place that a car is really essential but you can arrive by train if prepared to do little but eat, sleep and walk.

Room Tip: All rooms have views of lake

We really enjoyed the peace and friendly hospitality of the Quinta, and the excellent home-cooked meals. The lush garden is quite an oasis, and the adjoining lake is perfect for a refreshing dip or paddle on a warm summer's day. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with lots of character. At dinner-time we chatted with interesting people of various nationalities around the table, and enjoyed the ever-changing vista across the lake. Frank is an excellent bird-guide, and knows where to find the avian specialities of southern Portugal. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet, and look out over the garden to the lake.

We booked this place on the strength of the photos. It looked perfect for a get-away-from-it-all holiday, and it was! The scenery is amazing, and not even at its best as we went in mid November when little was in bloom. We booked at very short notice and were the only people in the place as it was their last week. Working in the tourist industry ourselves, we thought Frank & Daniella might have given us a slightly "cool" reception on this account and be desperate for their own holiday. None of it! They couldn't have been more welcoming. Their company, and that of the children, was wonderful, relaxed and chatty. Nothing was too much trouble, the room was clean, with a woodburner had we wanted it, the bed extremely comfortable and the food excellent. They also keep a few, locally made, good quality souvenirs if you want a reminder, and sell their own, delicious honey.
The only points one might want to consider if booking are:-

The 4Km track to get there, and I mean track! But if you want tranquility and exclusivity, this is how to get it. There's not a sound except birds, breeze and water. No intrusion from 21st century motors.

If you are a busy, self employed person needing constant, fast wi-fi, it's a bit slow, so leave someone else in charge at home except for emergencies!

If you require 5* hotel treatment, you don't get it from solar panel power! (No TV, kettle, hairdryer supplied in rooms) but If you want a coffee or tea it will always be gladly made for you, and if you're a 5* sort of traveller, this probably isn't the place for you.

...And you do have to like dogs. We do, and all four resident hounds were very friendly, accompanying us on walks around and looking very crestfallen if we got in the car to go further afield.

All in all a brilliant holiday and we will be going back, ideally when the flowers are in bloom.

When we received from Headwater an email advertising their first bird watching holiday we leapt at the chance. The whole trip exceeded our expectations in many ways: Quinta is a truly wonderful place, a beautiful setting, comfortable, and of course hosted so well by Frank, Daniella and family. Daniella produced lovely meals each evening, and Frank took us out on several great bird watching trips. We lost count of the number of birds we saw for the first time ever (lifers!), not to mention the wild boar family (!) and learnt so much from Frank on out travels. We'll definitely be planning to return!

This was an amazing experience with breathtaking scenery and peaceful surroundings.Frank and Daniella were wonderful hosts.Daniella's cooking was great with dinner being quite an occasion. We did a bird watching trip with Frank and with his knowledge of birds and his ability to spot them made for a very interesting outing. We will return.

My first visit to Portugal, and also the first time I have given feedback on TripAdvisor, and La Quinta was the perfect place to start our holiday. The place has an incredibly relaxing atmosphere and the hosts, Daniela and Frank, could not have been more charming. Our room was very comfortable and the meals provided every evening "family style" were delicious - fresh ingredents simply and well-cooked. The lake was great for swimming and the scenery on the local walks stunning. We loved the place and would thoroughly recommend it.
