“The perfect couples' retreat”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed at Thalassa Beach Resort in July 2013 for a week and had an incredible vacation. The hotel was smaller and more intimate than we expected, which was a very nice surprise! As a couple, we value quiet and privacy, which is why we chose Thalassa (an adult only hotel) and we were not disappointed.

The hotel staff are truly remarkable. They went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating, and they were almost all very friendly and funny. Manos and Girgio (apologies for the possibly incorrect spellings gentlemen!), as well as the hotel manager/owner Mariana, were particularly wonderful people! They took care of all reservations for us and recommended some great activities. The one tiny issue that we had (so small it's not really worth mentioning in detail because it was really just a misunderstanding) was handled very professionally and with a lot of effort by the staff and by Mariana, which we very much appreciated!

The hotel is on a nice stretch of beach, but also has a nice grassy area by the pool for those who don't care to get sand everywhere. There were plenty of sun beds, which meant we didn't have to fight over them with other guests, and the main road with tons of shops and restaurants were right behind the hotel, so it was easy to walk to everything. The car we rented through the hotel was delivered to us and picked up from the hotel, so we didn't have to worry about anything (and for those who are wondering about foreign licenses, my Canadian license was not a problem to rent the car!).

Thank you so much to Thalassa's staff for making our holiday so fantastic. We will definitely be back and we highly recommend this hotel to anyone considering staying in the Chania region.

Room Tip: Obviously if you can afford it, the sea view rooms are lovely, but I think you might actually have m...

Nice room, exactly as described and shown on website but very loud fan from the room below was disturbing and the curtains were insufficient making the room very bright in the morning. The room was clean, food at breakfast and at lunch was generally excellent and the staff were friendly for the most part. The Spa was ok too. Unfortunately the beach in front of the hotel is very rocky making access to the water difficult. The beach is much sandier if you walk a few hundred metres along in either direction. The hotel does provide free beds and umbrellas at its own beach and the wifi is accessible from the beach which is a nice bonus. The pool with the swim up bar is nice too.

Hotel and rooms extremely well maintained and EXACTLY as shown on the website. All the staff were great and nothing was too much trouble. Spa excellent and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back next year. Thanks

Hotel very comfortable and clean. Staff is really very kind and helpful, and they try to solve all the problems. Upon arrival we were upgraded from a Junior-suite to a Suite free of charge. Unfortunately the room was noisy and smelly-due to kitchens below- for our standards, so we asked for a change and we were immediately assisted by the staff. We finally got a junior-suite which was smaller but definitively suited our needs. We could also take advantage of the nice balcony. The Hotel has direct access to the seaside with facilities included, and the sea is wonderful. There is a nice pool (not for swimming training). We had chosen this hotel also for the yoga-pilates and Aqua-gym lessons advertised, thinking they were daily. Actually we only had 1 pilates and 1 aqua-gym lesson in a week, maybe because it was only June. We had the Breakfast only package, and it was perfect so every night we were free to eat at different restaurants, either in the surroundings or the locations we visited day by day. Breakfast is gorgeous, even if we are not used to eat all the food they provide (white wine too is included, for us it is unusual!), but if you need an espresso coffee you are charged of extra 2.50 each, which seemed a little strange provided that there was a cook only to cook eggs and bacon and all sort of food, for no extra charge.
We had rented a car so in a week we managed to see the Balos Lagoon (a paradise on earth, but do not go by boat, chose to go by car, easier than you would expect - and note: Balos does have beach facilities, do not bring umbrellas), Falasarna Beach, Cnosso and Heraklion, Chania, Imbros Gorges (better go there rather than Samaria), Marathi Beach, Kalathassa.
Our stay in Thalassa was perfect and we would definitively recommend this structure to friends and trip advisor users.
Crete is a wonderful island and is so warm and romantic!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the upper floor (they are junior suites or suites), because I have noticed that tho...

The hotel is one of the nicest hotels in Agia Maria!
The staf was more than friendly, very helpful, always smiling and happy to help!
The view from the pool to the beach is stunning, drinks and food were good!

Only two little negative points: The room we had was quite loud (sounded like the aircondition from the above room), but we booked last minute and did not have one of the bigger rooms as we thought we will only be in our room for sleeping and taking showers, so we did not have one of the suites with sea view. We had to heck out at 10 on our last day and did want to take a shower later as our flight wasn't leaving until 10pm. They gave us the key for another room and we were able to take showers and get ready there, which we found really friendly (they do offer the option of a later check out for 30€ though).

The food in the restaurant was good, we would have eaten there more often but they didn't really offer seafood so we went out for Dinner pretty much every night which was OK as there are plenty of places to go to.

The rooms are absolutely clean!! As this hotel is especially for couples there were no loud children in the pool and we were able to enjoy a glass of wine at the pool bar (actually IN the pool). All in all a very good hotel I would definitely recommend. The town itself is very touristy and there is not much to do.

Room Tip: If you think you use your room a lot go for a room with sea view, otherwise all other rooms will be...

This hotel compares favorably with J.W MARRIOTT AND HILTON. Fantastic location on beach, great staff and excellent food. Champagne for breakfast -what more can you want. Rooms have everything. Good position for sight seeing tours--little fun train next door and great tavernas 2-10 minutes walk.
No children-good to have a rest-recommend to slightly older couple wanting to escape grandchildren for a brief while.
Absolutely fantastic place. Highly recommended

Room Tip: go for a sea view suite

I have stayed in this hotel with a couple of friends for 8 days in June 2013. It was excellent! Room with garden view was quite spacious for two people, big clean bathroom with bath and nice balcony with table and chairs.
Wonderfull swimming pool, not too big, Id say about 15-20 meters length, with access to the bar, where they serve ice cold local Mythos beer! Stuff was very attentive, smiley and made us feel relaxed. There are a lot of comfy sunbeds, so no pressure to find a free one. A few meters from the pool and bar there is private hotel beach, with beautiful views. It is a stone beach and it can be tricky to get into the sea, but it is ok and sandy if you enter the sea by the left pier.
We all really liked breakfasts - tasty fresh juice, freshly made omlete to your taste, wide variety of dishes and treats. You can even have sparkling wine in the morning!
Stuff was very helpful when we wanted to stay for 5 more hours after checkout time, and provided us room where we could take a shower. Also we got complementary 15 mins massage in the spa.
The only-adults policy was what attracted us to this hotel, and I must say that it works wonderfully! Quiet relaxed atmosphere, and no screaming kids in swimming pool!
The location is good, 15 mins drive by car to Chania, which we liked a lot, where we spent time walking along narrow old street by the port and having dinners in tavernas. We have also visited Elafonisi beach which was about 2 hours drive from the hotel, and Balos bay to which it is better to catch a boat - 30 minutes to the port by car from the hotel.
There are a lot of shops and tavernas around the hotel also, so you can go to new place for food every night.
I would definetely come back to this hotel again and recommending it to everyone I know!
