“Good & Bad”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

My wife and I stayed in this hotel in September which was quite a surprise as we had booked the Santa Marina Plazza just a short walk away, for the reason that we wanted an adults only hotel that would be a quiet and more relaxing place, and because it had fantastic reviews. Due to an error by the travel agent, or so we were told? we were booked into the Santa Marina Beach by mistake. (Not a good start to our holiday), and we could not get into the Plazza because it was fully booked. I have to say that rumors of overbooking in both hotels were common.

Anyway we had no option but to stay and were put in a small room right at the back of the complex over the road. This was a small, dark and not particularly nice room, with two bunk beds as well as two singles, that was clearly not good for a couple. We complained straight away and to their credit our room was changed to a much better pool view room.

The hotel is generally very clean but it is split between two complex's, which are joined by a tunnel under a busy and sometimes noisy road. The pool area is quite large and clean and there is a small bar. In the main complex it is again very clean, and the real positive was the staff, who are all really fantastic, friendly and helpful.

This part of the hotel is right on the beach front and you eat your meals outside, if you wish, in a lovely area overlooking the sea. All very nice. However the hotel is very basic and in need of a revamp in places. The beach is not the cleanest and you have to pay 5 euros a day for the use of two sun loungers, that's if you can get one as many people get up early and put towels on them just like the bad old days in Spain.

The food in the hotel was generally OK. A very good selection both at breakfast and in the evening. We were not all inclusive so I cannot comment on the food at other times of the day. Although there was some hot freshly cooked food, most of the cooked dishes were often cold and not particularly good, although the salads and sweets were excellent. Be warned if it rains and everyone is inside eating it is chaos and very very noisy.

There were a lot of small children there even in mid September. Not that I have any issue with children, but if you want peace and quiet this may not be for you.

Overall this hotel is in my opinion no where near a 4 star hotel, more like a 3 star. It offers fantastic service from the staff, but is just like going to Spain in the 80's. It is very tired in many areas and is on a busy main road.

The resort itself has the benefit of being only a few kilometers away from Chania, which is a lovely place, but other than that it is a small place on a main road, with a small beach, which is not particularly clean, and a selection of taverna's and shops. We found some great little bars with live music, the best of which was Sebastian's, which also served great food.

Would I go back? probably not as there was nothing there other than Chania to make it an attractive holiday. But I would go back to Crete as it is lovely and the people were amongst the friendliest I have met anywhere on holiday.

I hope this is of help to anyone travelling to this resort and hotel. I have tried to be as honest and fair as I can and appreciate that many people may have a different view.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the sea, which will be the quieter rooms with the best view.

Dear Paul P
Thank you very much for your comment on Tripadvisor.

Firstly, on behalf of the Santa Marina Plaza hotel, we would like to mention and clear thing out as there was no booking sent to us from your agent. It is obviously the travel agent error and not of the hotel's and that can certified, as the voucher of your original booking was refered to the Hotel Santa Marina Beach, and not to the Santa Marina Luxury Boutique Hotel. It is quite unfair and we will not accept any responsibility for the misunderstanding between your party and your travel agent's.

Regarding your complain about the room, as you already notice, we did upgrade your room category at no extra charge (which is not common), in order to satisfy your needs and because you had already been inconvenienced by the misunderstanding between you and your travel agent.
Regarding the number of the available sunbeds comment, we would like to mention that it is impossible to put as many sunbeds as the number of our guests, due to limitations on the beach capacity available to the hotel. The beach is being cleaned every day and we try to maintain it clean during the day.
However, it is great to hear that you have enjoyed our hospitality and the facilities of our hotel.
We are looking forward to welcoming you again in our Santa Marina beach.
Best regards
The management.

Our stay in the hotel was very nice, the biggest + is the location - very close to the shops, restaurants etc. The room was OK, cosy and clean. The staff was extremely friendly, especially Eftihis and Stavros in the main bar :) We drank a lot with our freshly met friends from Denmark, but this was very funny and good time :) We enjoy our stay and we could recommend this hotel also for families and singles! let me start by saying i have not stayed at this hotel however with a week to go before my holiday have been advised that they have an overbooking situation and will have to cancel my booking. i booked this holiday three months ago so it seems strange to me that the hotel has been overbooked for 3 months and i am only now being told this. i searched hotels a lot before i booked this hotel and this is not the first time this has happened at this hotel according to tripadvisor reviews. it shows a lack of organisation and professionalism by the hotel in my opinion.

Dear Vicky27,

Thank you very much for your comment on Tripadvisor.

Firstly we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this confusion has caused to you.
We would like to notice that we never ask from you to cancel your reservation. We contacted your travel agent twenty days before your arrival to report the complications we had with some bookings. We offered an alternative solution to reallocate your reservation to upgrade your reservation to a five star hotel.

After all we would like to apologize once again for this situation.
We hope to give us a second chance in the future to redress.

Best regards

Forget emotional stuff, these are facts only
I and my family(4) stayed at St Marina Beach Hotel for two week in the end of August beginning of Sept.
We had all-inclusive
We ate in the hotel all our stay

Hotel
- The premises is moderate in size , not small but not very big either so all rooms are close to the sea
-one swimming pool, deep and clean but no water slides
-Maisonettes are big and comfortable
- rooms with bunk-bed are small for a family of four if kids are teens
- rooms cleaned every day, very clean but beds mattresses a little bit hard
- rooms near the road a bit noisy due to cars
- soap and clean white towels at room are provided daily, beech towels can be collected from reception with 10€ refundable deposit
- near to town centre 15 minutes by bus, bus stop in front of the hotel, ticket 1.60€ p/p one direction.
- plenty of supermarkets and restaurants within minutes walking distance
-internet 15€ a week , they can give you pass for two devices same price if you ask, internet covers most of areas
- Hotel premises are very clean, but some astray dogs and cats. They need to look into solving this prob.
- Greek night every occurs two weeks, is entertaining, and they do BBQ, held outside. Don't miss it

Restaurant
- indoor open buffet, but you can set and eat outside, Waiters bring the drinks
- food is fresh, amounts are plenty, good variety, but some odd days varieties are limited
- traditional greek food
- There is alacarte Restaurant by the sea, Chef should be congratulated for his alacarte dishes they superb.

Staff
Wonderful! Very friendly and very polite all of them

I recommend this place for families, or seniors

All the staff should be congratulated for their lovely attitude,

We have just returned from the Santa Marina Beach Hotel, after 2 fabulous weeks. The hotel is split into 2 buildings – beach side and pool side/garden views divided by a busy main road that is easily and safely accessible via a short subway.

Our outward flight with Monarch Airlines from London Gatwick airport was delayed by 4 hours, and as a result we arrived very late in the evening, only to be told that the sea view room we had paid extra for would not be ready until the following morning. Disappointed, but too tired to argue we spent our first night in a small, but clean road-side temporary room that reception had allocated. At breakfast, we were informed that our sea view room was ready and we were quickly transferred to the lovely room 219, with beautiful views of the sea and the sun rise and sun sets! Our room was compact but very clean and comfortable. There is an additional charge for the safe, but in our case, this was automatically waived by reception because our room had not been ready on arrival.

My husband celebrated his birthday on holiday and the staff marked his special day by leaving treats of grapes, a bottle of wine in our room and we have received additional cakes with our dessert at the a la carte restaurant.

There were some minor glitches relating to a water leak from the air conditioner, de-magnetisation of our our room cards and the safe battery needing to be replaced, but these were addressed promptly within minutes of reporting these difficulties to reception. We were impressed by the staff commitment to provide a high level of service and ensure we enjoyed our holiday.

The quality and choice of food was very good for all inclusive and excellent in the a la carte restaurant. All inclusive guests are permitted one ‘free’ visit to the a la carte restaurant but the drinks are payable.

The staff were friendly and worked so hard. A huge thank you to all the staff at Santa Marina for working so hard to make our holiday so enjoyable and special! Crete has just become one of our favourite Greek Islands. We would definitely go back.

Recommended trips - We would recommend:

(1) Elafonisi is a great day out to blue Caribbean- like warm shallow sea on the south side of the island, although there are surprisingly few fish or other sea life worth snorkelling for and the beach is very popular with visitors.

(2). The Samaria Gorge walk has spectacular mountain views, is a great personal challenge and way of burning off some of those excess all inclusive calories! However, do wear good comfortable walking shoes to support your feet and prevent blisters. I’m not a hiker, so wore trainers and the walk wrecked them and I developed blisters on my toes from the arduous downward walking. Glad we did it though!

TIPS
(1). If possible get a sea view room for lovely views of the beach.

(2). Beach chairs: There is a small charge for beach chairs with parasol - 2.5 euros per person, but it's worth it. Get there early, as the beach gets very busy in August.

Room Tip: (1). If possible get a sea view room for lovely views of the beach. (2). Beach chairs: There is...

First the very small bad bit. Stayed at the Santa Marina with family. Booked two family rooms after researching the hotel on their web site. Expected two rooms, instead only got a double room with a bunk bed in. Interestingly on the back of the door it stated that it was for a maximum of two people not four. Not good if you need a little privacy from your children. Also room not ready when we arrived; had to stay in another room for a night. The worst bit - Omar (the lifeguard at the pool was as much use as a chocolate fire guard! He was supposed to supply the animation - ha that's a laugh. We stayed in one night for the disco which was supposed to start at 10. Asked about - no one knew where he was. We found him later by the pool with a young lady - who he was seen to take out the next day on his motorbike. What a loser. All braun no brain. Such a shame as the rest of the staff were absolutely perfect in every way. Good bits - food excellent, lots of choice every day both morning and night, even for picky children. Staff extremely helpful and always smiling. Beach beautiful and sea very shallow for a long way out. Though don't understand why the hotel charges all inclusive customers to use their sunbeds on the beach - very strange. Lifeguards on duty during the daytime. Pool for hotel is through an underpass - but this was not a problem very clean and well lit. Felt safe everywhere. Travelled with four children two aged 13, two aged 11. Air con free for the stay. The whole place was very clean, our room was cleaned every day - no bugs, very few mosquitoes. Must say all the staff (apart from Omar) work extremely hard and are always pleasant and smiling. There are very few Brits about, apparently not many travel to this side of the island. I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel. Thank you Santa Marina.

Room Tip: If booking a family - apparently you have to book a masionette.

The staff are fantastic!!! The location at Agia Marina probably suits someone or a couple younger than my age but the position of the hotel is ideal as its right on the beach.
The food at the resort was really good!! There are many cafe/ restaurant options within walking distance. Ask for the part of the hotel right on the beach on the beach otherwise you will be across the road((
Another tip DO get a massage from one of the people walking the beach!! They are expensive and rubbish!! Book one through reception for about the same cost but by a trained person!! Have a great holiday)))

Thank you very much for your comment on Tripadvisor.

Taking the chance of your comment regarding the road crossing in between the two parts of the hotel, we would like to notice that there is an underground tunnel which connects these two sections.

This tunnel has been constructed in order to secure the safety of our guests; it is private for the use of our Santa Marina Beach Hotel guests.

We are looking forward to welcoming you again in our Hotel.
