“Luxury in Costa Rica”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2014

We stayed in a 2 Bedroom condo (Veranda unit) in Los Suenos, Costa Rica. The grounds are beautifully landscaped making it a nice walk to the marina and area shops. The condo unit was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was fully stocked with all dishes, utensils and cooking gear needed including a blender. There were plenty of towels for 3 people, including beach towels. The washer/dryer came in handy. Wifi signal wasn't the strongest, but worked enough to send/read emails. The signal dropped a few times daily but came back up a few moments later. The TV had a few English channels but most programming is Spanish or dubbed in Spanish. The nicest part of the complex was all the swimming pools. Each condo cluster has their own private pool and small jacuzzi (with manicured gardens), plus you have access to the big "Beach Club" pool. The big pool has a kiddie pool area, swim-up bar, a jacuzzi, and adjacent white sand beach. The white sand beach is nestled between the Beach Club pool and the natural black sand beach, so the ocean waves break against the black sand. Thus, the white sand beach isn't next to the ocean water. The white and black sand beaches were empty with everyone getting sun around the pool. The big pool is very family friendly, so expect a LOT of children. (Most pool visitors had multiple children there). The Marriott next door allows you to use their pool too, so take a walk over to check it out. (Lots of families with children there too). At the Marriott pool, there are a lot of iguanas running around laying in wait for the pineapple garnish adorning your pool-side cocktail. If you toss it on the ground, they will come. (Marriott drinks are about $9).

Room Tip: We liked having a first floor condo unit since the back sliding glass doors lead to a patio walkway...

We spent 6 days in a Del Mar condo and overall we were very pleased with the experience. Although we were only one couple, availability was such that the condo best fitting our preferences (top floor, ocean view) was a 3-bedroom. We were able to get it at the one-bedroom rate because of the length of our stay. Although two of the bedrooms were locked off, the living area was very ample and we did have access to two bathrooms so we found it an excellent value. Note, however, that the Del Mar condos do not have elevators (we were told when we made the reservation that there were elevators, but learned when we got there that Del Mar is the only condo area without them); we didn't have a problem climbing the stairs but others very well might. Interestingly, the plumbing in the whole condo was shut off the day we arrived because of needed repairs and when we complained to our rental agent she lugged two enormous containers of bottled water up those stairs (we were both very pleased and impressed!). We never did figure out the cleaning service; we were told that the condo would be cleaned and linens and towels would be changed twice a week but the maid only came once, and not on either scheduled day. That was not a big deal for us because there were so many extra towels in the condo. What was a bit more troublesome were tiny ants around the sinks, which required that we be very meticulous in putting away all food and keeping all the counters and sinks wiped dry. The grounds at the resort are beautifully manicured and very ample. Unless you come with the intention of staying on the golf course (in which case a rental golf cart would serve your needs), you'd want to have a rental car for the flexibility to get around the various areas of the resort as well as nearby attractions. Aside from the rolling lawns, the Del Mar area has 3 pools, which were very quiet and peaceful. The resort also has a club pool in the center of the resort, which is open to all condo residents, but we found it to be just the opposite, with its swim-up bar. Getting blasted in a swimming pool is just not our scene, though it seemed to be the preferred activity of a number of the condo residents; fortunately the pool is so large that you can escape much of the noise by sitting and swimming in areas away from the bar. The resort has its own stretch of beach but we preferred walking the adjacent beach at the Marriott. The marina area has a number of shops. We didn't find the pizza at the Italian restaurant to be very good but we particularly enjoyed the pastries and breads from the bakery.

I go to Costa Rica regularly and I always stay in the condos at Los Suenos. They grounds are well kept and beautiful. The pools are clean and large. The beach club has a fantastic pool area and swim up bar that will grill fresh hamburgers and chicken sandwiches (or you can order from the other resort restaurants and they will deliver to the pool)
The Marina has great charter boats for fishing day trips ("Hoo's your Daddy" with captain Dana is our favorite)
You can find condos on VRBO -- I always try to use the condo Colina 12A if it is available. Large, 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and great views of the mountains

Room Tip: La Colina 12 A is the best condo I've stayed in. There are other avialable too. just check VRBO

If you want to stay in a first class place, in a still underdeveloped country, then this is the place. I would put the Los Suenos resort up against a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton any time. The four of us (two couples), split a three bedroom condo on the golf course for roughly $325/night total, and I was blown away. Rent a golf cart while you are there to make your life much easier while on the poperty. I will definitely stay here again.

Ps. The "soda" (ie.cafe) across the street, directly in front of the gate, has incredible food. A must do for breakfast or lunch.

Wonderful Condo, Del Mar 3N, is on ground level with pool just steps away. Directly inside gate which made for easy golf cart ride to store, and local beach. (Thank Goodness, for cart, it is across resort to marina, but every trip was wonderful due to view). Only one hick up for an adventure planned, but made things right a few hours later. Cleaning ladies did a magnificient job and the landscapers were terrific. (Beautiful landscaping and care for grounds, plus very friendly and said good morning while having coffee on patio). Help with anything was just a phone call away to front office. "Tourismo" drivers were all fantastic, with information about local things and stopping to point out wild McCaws flying in trees next to road. All security personnel were very pleasant and got to know you by second day. Made us feel at home. Golf course was awesome, but never got to use it! (busy catching and releasing 26 sailfish and a bull Dorado in three days of fishing) CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN TO MY NEW FOUND PARADISE!!!!! A bit spendy, but you only live once, and if done right, once is enough! Highly Recommend for a vacation of a lifetime!

Room Tip: Del Mar 3N is on ground level, better view from above, but steps to carry things up and down.

The English translation of Los Suenos is "The Dreams". And it is aptly named.

This was my seventh stay in Los Suenos. I booked a seven-night stay through the Stay in Costa Rica agency for the Del Mar condos in unit 2D.

The Stay in Costa Rica management office is very accommodating and arranged for a free golf cart. This came in handy to get around the large resort, which includes a Marriott, a marina, several restaurants, shops, and a spa. The management office also arranged for taxis, dinner reservations, a daily cleaning service, and were there 24/7 to answer any questions.

I chose Del Mar because the views of the golf course, Pacific Ocean, and sunsets are spectacular and it did not disappoint. Eating breakfast from the terrace is a great way to start the day, often with all manner of birds singing while iguanas curiously observe you from the nearby trees. Then the highlight of any day at the Del Mar condos is the sunset. You can take in the sunsets from your terrace, poolside, or from the nearby Marriott. The only drawback was the living room furnishings were a bit dated in my particular unit and due for an update. But this was only a minor issue.

Between breakfast and sunsets, there is plenty to do including swimming, golfing and deep-sea fishing. I skipped fishing on this trip and opted instead for major R&R including swimming, poolside reading, and the spa at every opportunity.

Just outside the resort Playa Herradura is a five-minute golf cart ride away. This is also an outstanding area for sunset viewing and dinner.

Other trips you can do in a day or less from Los Suenos include Jaco Beach for souvenir shopping and for its active nightlife and dinner scene, Manuel Antonio National Park, the Pacific Aerial Rainforest, a giant crocodile-viewing tour on the Tarcoles River, Carara National Park for hiking, and so forth. Either the management office or the Marriott tour desk can help arrange these.

All in all, this trip to the Del Mar condos in Los Suenos was great for R&R and I plan to return again.

Room Tip: Second and third floor rooms are available but stairs can be cumbersome if you are not accustomed to...

Stayed at a villas owned by a guy from WPB, FL. Went here for a fishing trip with 5 other guys. Very nice resort in general. The Villas were nice, but definitley not very convenient in terms of getting down to the main resort part of town (needed a car). This was purely a fishing trip (which was excellent). So i didn't really get to explore Costa Rica or the grounds too much. I would definitely go back again. Our days consisted of getting up and on the boat by 7am and didn't get back till 5pm. then we drank and hung out at the community pool (our villas was 1 of about 24 villas on a private street that had a community pool - much like any gated community). It was nice. Didn't see the beach or main part of hotel. Got to explore some of Costa Rica, but it's not a 4 Seasons and you are in Costa Rica. I have to believe that this is the nicest major resort in this part of Costa Rica. People are very nice.
