“Excellent stay at Marriott Los Suenos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

We recently stayed at the Marriott Los Suenos and had an excellent stay. The pool and the grounds are really in terrific condition. The staff we encountered were all very well trained and friendly. The only drawback for families is that the food is quite expensive -- expect US resort type prices (such as the $16 Marriott hamburger). We stayed here before so the food/drink prices were not a shock to us but I can see how people would go to Costa Rica and expect things to be less. The breakfast buffet in the morning is really well done, the food is fresh and plentiful. We did not play golf but the course looked to be in terrific condition. The rooms are very nice (all tiled floors) and have a colonial type feel. We recommend the hotel highly.

Beautiful facility, but poor hospitality service. We had 30 family members staying at Los Suenos for a wedding in Jaco, and the Marriott made it difficult for us from the beginning. They refused to hold rooms without a sizeable deposit and required an upfront payment for a minimum of ten rooms. They also required that the wedding planner handle all the money payments--she was the only one they would accept money from. When we arrived at the facility, the first thing we were told was that breakfast was not included, despite the fact that the contract we had with them very clearly said it was included. They tried to deny the contract and claim the wedding planner had added the language without their approval. After a tense few hours, they agreed to abide by the terms of the contract, but the next day, they started telling our guests again that breakfast was not included. They also claimed they did not have to honor the requests for certain bed sizes in the rooms, even though the wedding planner had given them a complete list of what each person needed--a list necessitated by their own requirement that we do everything through the wedding planner and not make our reservations with them directly. All told, this initial aggravation put a very poor first impression on the facility. I would not recommend it to anyone, and suggest that their staff attend some classes on hospitality training.

Both hotels offer very different experiences. JW seems a bit more modern, less jungle-like.

1.) Service was a little more friendly/authentic at Los Suenos compared to JW.

2.) Greater variety of restaurants on the resort to choose from at JW. Breakfast at both places is pretty expensive (~$25 for breakfast buffet). JW has dinner buffet for ~$28, but Los Suenos doesn't have the buffet option.

3.) JW seems to have closer beaches where you can surf. Los suenos doesn't have as much emphasis on beach-life/snorkeling/etc.

4.) Pool at JW is easier to lounge at, and you can see the ocean from the pool which is pretty cool. The Los Suenos pool is a bit colder but there's a cool man-made waterfall.

5.) Both hotels offer travel /tour agencies that can help you book.

6.) Rooms were nice in both places - a bit more modern and chic though at the JW. Nice tub we got at the JW. Both have fold-down service.

** Overall, Los Suenos is a bit more tucked away, while JW offers a more modern-resort experience **

Room Tip: Roads easier to get around at Los Suenos than JW

We stayed late July to early August, 2013. The only rain we experienced was at night, and the last night was the only time it was torrential, which we thought was magnificent to experience from The Point restaurant in Jaco (more on this later). We were never hot, unless we were in the rain forests, which are incredibly humid. The weather was just perfect for our trip. Rainy season?????

Before I get into all the things we absolutely loved about Los Suenos Marriott, I need to mention something I really wish I’d been aware of before our trip. The resort offers really cheap deals to Costa Rican citizens, I’m assuming just during the low season. What this meant was both weekends we were there, the resort was completely packed with huge groups, most with many, many small children. These where not your typical resort families. The pool area went from being a relaxing paradise during the week to something more akin to an apartment complex pool. There were strollers everywhere, pool toys and other toys everywhere, easily 50 kids under the age of 5. There was the constant screaming that comes from a pool full of very small children. The mother of an older toddler changed the child’s poopy swim diaper right next to us. She had the child bend over and touch her toes, giving us a full poop covered moon. When she was done cleaning the child, she left the diaper laying on the ground next to her chair, where it sat until one of the staff members cleaned it up. Many moms changed diapers poolside. The pool area started to smell. There were wet t-shirts wadded up on the pool deck. Also, these locals know how the resort works, and snagged chairs very early, so it was very hard to find lounges together for our family, and volleyballs and pool floats were gone. There was a 30 foot long line waiting to get into breakfast. I loved the resort so much, I would still recommend it. But I would suggest that you plan your adventures and dining out for the weekends and enjoy the beautiful pool during the week.

Before choosing Los Suenos, I read many reviews on Trip Advisor, and agree with the vast majority who rated this resort as excellent. From the minute we arrived, the staff was exceptionally helpful, friendly, and professional. Several exceptional stand outs were Susana Flores and Alex Delgada, at the front desk, and Andres, a waiter who greeted us by name the second time we showed up to eat at the lobby bar restaurant. Our room was spotless. There is absolutely no explanation for any negative reviews about the staff and management of this hotel. The staff is just the best we’ve experienced. To a person, they made us feel welcome and taken care of.

The hotel is just beautiful, with almost everything but the rooms being open to the beautiful grounds, including the hallways. Lots of thought and detail were put into every aspect of the resort. The pool area is beautifully laid out and landscaped, the pool furniture is in perfect shape, and everything is kept very clean. While enjoying the pool, you never have to wait long for someone to come by and ask if you need anything. We didn’t come to Costa Rica for the beaches, so we weren’t disappointed by the beach at Los Suenos. It is natural, and the pink shells on the dark sand were beautiful. If you’re looking for a typical white sand beach, Manuel Antonio beach is unbelievably gorgeous. There is a bathroom nearby, but bring your own food and drinks, and understand that there is a bit of a hike to get there from the entrance. We saw lots of monkeys and sloths on our walk.

The food at the pool restaurant was good, and we all really liked the food in the lobby bar restaurant. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, and had new dishes every day, which kept it fresh and fun. We left the resort to eat most of the time because we like to explore. Our favorite restaurant in Jaco was The Point, which is right on the beach in an open air “shack” with GREAT prices and really delicious food. We really wish we’d discovered this restaurant earlier in our trip. We also really liked the Taco Bar, which was very crowded, but fun.

We booked our excursions through Piko Travel, out on the beach by the hotel. We saved money, but they really don’t describe the adventures very completely, and on each one we did, there was information that I wish I’d known. The horseback riding to the waterfall was up a path so steep that we all admitted to each other afterward that we were terrified. Well worth it, when you get to the waterfall, but there was also a steep hike down to the water from the point where you leave the horses. Just wish we’d known.

Wonderful country, wonderful vacation, wonderful resort, wonderful staff!!!

Room Tip: The view from the ocean side rooms is spectacular, and when we were in the room in the evening, one...

We stayed here as part of a mini vacation after a family wedding. The group booked ten rooms and we used a business credit card to secure all rooms. Upon arrival we all were checked in within seconds as the English speaking reception staff were ready for us. My wife and I waited until the entire group was off and were told our bags were in the room.....4001 at the far end of the large property. We decided to walk...all the floors up and a block through the long halls. We were actually a bit miffed as it was hot and the halls open to spectacular views. After hours of travel we had hoped to be in our rooms and prepare for a swim ...quick as sticks... As we approached the door...at the end of the long hall, a staff person asked us for our key and she ran it through the reader and asked our names. Then she opened the door. Ugh...they had made a mistake and given us a room that we could not afford.......( we had reserved best available ...but thought within the posted prices.............This was the Presidential Suite. It had a magnificent foyer with a guest powder room with a solid onyx sink and antique wooden base. The entire suite was over the top. I immediately walked back to reception to announce the mistake. They were horrified I was unhappy......I was not unhappy but thought this super expensive room was way over our budget limits.......and we needed to move immediately before charges were started. To my surprise, the management had up-graded us at the regular best regular room rate to the finest they had to offer. Anyone finding a fault with this suite needs to stay home. The massive spa tub was the largest indoor spa I have every seen. The marble double sinks were of the longest slab of granite/marble I have heard of. The
full kitchen was the nicest hotel suite set up possible. We had four balconies to enjoy views from every direction. What a spectacular set up.
The hotel pool is huge. It has rivers of water with islands everywhere. Fantastic.
Food good to very good. Service...most pleasant and effecient...like we were honored cousins from over seas.
The casino was underwhelming. Since we are next to Nevada and frequent Las Vegas, not suprised with the low key gambling. The beach is not a first rate site but the hotel, the setting and the warm vibes make this a go to spot. The name Los Suenos means DREAM......
My wife and I recommend to all this be an actual event...not a dream. Worth the extra time and effort and typical of the warm welcome Costa Rica gives to all with open arms.

Room Tip: The corner suite was over the top....book it for a special event...worth it. If it is not available...

This hotel was the last 3 nights of our Costa Rican stay. The grounds are huge, with mini golf, a nearby marina, and a pool that has eclipsed the Olympic sized pool our girls are accustomed to . Wonderful staff and excellent breakfast buffet. They also offers kids activities and also a casino for the adults.

Stayed here in July with my family and this property is stunning. Everything from the views of the ocean to the pools, grounds, and the marina. Rooms were nice size and very comfortable.
Pool area was very big and very clean. All of the staff were exceptionally nice and helpful. Food and drinks were good, but of the resort price.

If you are going to spend extra money to stay in a resort of this level you won't be disappointed.
