I did not find this hotel as bad as some of the other reviews. It was very basic but I did not expect a resort style hotel on Easter Island. The rooms were clean. The breakfast each morning was fine. I am not sure what else you could want here and the price was not too high

We stayed in one of the deluxe suites and had a larger sized room but that was the best part of our entire stay. The rooms were not as clean as they should be, our toilet ran the whole time and although we called, nobody ever showed up to fix it. We had no hot water for the first two days and they took 6 angry calls and 1 desk visit to get it fixed. And, our mini fridge mad a terrible noise until I kicked it. Not worth the $280 a night.

Okay it is getting a bit run down BUT the location is the best. Stunning sea views. Good spacious rooms. Nice bar and restaurant (but not the best cooking). Lovely grounds. I have stayed here twice (once 3 years ago) and it had just aged a little more - and I loved it. Staff are OK and helpful. The row of units that are not deluxe / superior are to be AVOIDED - they are dilapidated smallish and have much poorer views. The deluxe / superior rooms are great and I got a good deal through Octopus (Australian firm). They now have a web site and the hotel is owned by a company that plans to change it, do it up - but I fear may spoil it. If you can stay here as it is now in a superior room go for it - it is special now but may not be soon (could be better - I just don't think so)

  • Disliked — getting a bit worn
  • Tips/Secrets — Superior room ONLY

The operators of this flea bag operation are unprincipled in the basic tenants of hospitality and customer service. They will lie to your face and tell you that no reservation was made--this in spite of a confirmation number, for a prepaid stay of three nights! After discussing the matter with the clerk for nearly 30 minutes, we were offered a room, in a deluxe category, for $25.00 more per night than what we had already paid for. Furthermore, there was nothing deluxe about the room, which was bug infested and lacking in basic amenities. We declined the management's "gracious offer" to accomodate us for the duration of our visit, and moved on to the Tau Raa, where we should have gone to begin with! The owners of Tau Raa are amazing, and they go out of their way to accomodate your needs and make your visit to Easter Island memorable. Even if you do not stay at the Tau Raa, be sure to book an island tour with Bill. In closing, we were able to have the charges for the Hotel Hanga Roa removed from our credit card account. I would advise all prospective visiotrs to remote tourist locations with limited lodging facilities, a final word of warning: research your lodging choices on the internet very thoroughly, and choose your lodging wisely. It really can mean the difference between a mediocre visit, and a memorable one.

It is the worst as it advertises as 4 star, very misleading.
Booking
We booked this hotel orginally as we could find little information before travelling to Easter Island & the photos seemed okay on each website we found. The other advantage was it took credit card as payment. I booked this through amadeus it was ironically listed as 4 star!! We wish amadues would remove it as a hotel or at a minimum change the star rating.
Arrival
On arrival at IPC airport we were the only ones without a pick up transfer as all the B&B guests were greeted by the famiiles and that was the first sign for us. It was so lovely to see the friendly locals meeting other visitors & we felt like oh dear! We got a taxi (a local's car), paid USD$3.00 to go around corner more or less and as we drove in it looked run down like it was a great hotel maybe 30 or 40 years ago.
Reception
Well there was a window in the wall with a nice lady, the owner or manager was always around but to get half a smile maybe required a tip. We were shown to our room and on the way there I thought okay maybe renovations are being done but infact the standard of this hotel is 1 star in our opinion. We were amazed our reservation arrived here electronically as it seemed so backwards & yes they took AMEX!
Rooms.
On entering the room the smell was as if the windows hadn't been opened in many years and the humidity and the stale smell in the bedding made us not want to use it. We reserved a king bed, oh but of course not available only 2 singles so we thought okay we will push the beds together. We approached reception to ask if any king rooms available they said they were full - not true. I agree with the other forum member who wrote the towel situation - we had the same, we ended up wearing out beach shoes to have a shower as each time flushed the toilets the contents (putting this nicely) arrived on the floor. The stop tap was so rusty and leaking water that when we tried to use this to stop the water flooding the bathroom it broke and more water flooded out. We found a bucket to collect some of the water. There was water on the bathroom floor the whole time we were there so we used shoes all the time. The only window in the room was the bathroom window and it was broken. The wardrobe was closed in who knows how many years and smelled from the humidity. Safety deposit box was a padlock on a metal box, just worked. Again, no possiblity to change rooms or hotel as others full. We had a deluxe room but I dreaded to see the standard category. We saw a lady "cleaning" the standard room and from the glance inside they were terrible. It is ground floor, sliding door faces small patio with plastic chairs outside that face the only positive thing about this hotel the nice view of the ocean. Wild horses also ran past our window each day, just wonderful. There was a kettle in the room and tea and coffee available, don't think it had been touched in many years, a tv where we had some interesting yoga moves to get reception to Chilean tv channels. We met people on our travels on the island who were camping or at B&B and it is our recommendation to stay in B&B. Everyone was happy where they were staying on fellow guests at H.R. all felt the same. We visisted some other places to see availability options, the people at other places were so so friendly, very clean and well kept. Tthe management if we can say that of this hotel did not care at all of our concerns, complaints or requests. They had our money and knew we could not leave as only LAN flies there are there were no flights to even change on the day in concern. So if one was to have problem with the hotel it can be a bit isolating.
Facilities
Breakfast was included and it was okay. It again was in need of renovation and very basic in furnishings which given it is rated a 4 star was interesting. The pool was empty and the garden area which was the panorama from the dining room very overgrown and unloved. The manager just sat at the table next to us each mornign and watched all the guests. No greetings. There is minimal lighting around the hotel and the paths are very few so it is muddy if it has rained so take shoes you dont like to this place. This hotel is famous for the entertainment I'm not sure if it still hosts but visitors to the island come to this hotel to watch the islanders show I think on a Sunday. We found on the website that this hotel had undergone renovations but it needs to either be bulldozed down or completely redone.
Area
The area is okay we did most on foot and then hired a jeep. No insurance available for rental cars it is 100% cost if there is accident etc even though in English they advertise insurance as we could speak the language there was laughter when we queried insurance. Other accommodations on this island would make it a perfect trip, unfortunately this hotel did not make ours perfect however we still enjoyed the destination and made the best of the situation.

Our family (two adults, 1 teenager) stayed three nights at this hotel in January 2006. It was very nice but only after we up-graded our reservation to the deluxe rooms. The standard rooms are terrible (too hot, too small, thin wooden walls; more like a bad youth hostel). The deluxe rooms are very nice, clean and spacious. The view is just great over the ocean. The service and breakfast are okay. Pool was under repair. Internet is free. In general a good place to stay.

We "treated" ourselves to this place, after staying in one of the cockrach infested residenciales for a few days. They claimed they didn't have any of the cheaper rooms (around US $120) so we opted for the deluxe room. Nice room, but the service at the front desk was unbelievable. We only had two towels in the bathroom, so I went to the front desk to politely request more towels, and was told that NO, I could not have any. I then asked for just one to put on the floor for when we got out of the shower. (Did I mention that by "two towels" I mean "no bathmat?") She then just reinforced her "no." We were paying over two hundred bones a night, and this is what we got.
Oh, and the pool was quite dirty. Very cloudy water. There's a sort of "foot bath" area meant to clean your feet upon entering, but it was dry, natch. The whole place really needs some attention.
