“Best resort on Easter Island”
Reviewed June 25, 2014

We stayed here this past Easter <get it?> and after touring the entire island found this place to be the best place to stay. Excellent location over looking the ocean. Very clean and modern. Only problem was the wait staff was undermaned (possibly due to the holiday). Don't expect TVs or great internet service, but consider where you are. This is the most remote inhabited place on earth. This would be our choice if we go again.

Room Tip: Ask to stay close to the reception building. It can be a long walk.

I cannot imagine a better place to experience the magnificent Rapa Nui island than at the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa. From being personally chauffeured from the airport to the hotel (complete with a welcoming lei), to enjoying a refreshing drink at check-in, to having the staff promptly and professionally cater to your needs, the service here was remarkable. What made it stand out though, was the welcoming, friendly feel of the staff. Unlike other hotels where the employees can be so professional that they're almost cold, these people were warm-hearted and conversational. We learned much about the culture of the island just by chatting with the employees. Overall, this was a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experience staying at Hotel Hangaroa on Rapa Nui.

Room Tip: Getting a room close to the sea is the best. You can sit out on your porch, relax, and hear the wave...

Let me begin by saying that we checked into another establishment in town that received good rating but was less expensive. We were unsure of the extremely high prices of the few larger hotels on the island. Upon checking in, we immediately switched hotels to the Hangaroa and never looked back. We knew that the less expensive places were not luxurious, but it was more rustic than we had in mind. With all that said, we took out our credit card, took a deep breath, and enjoyed our complimentary daily glass of wine overlooking the beautiful ocean sunset from the Hangaroa Bar. The room was very well appointed and clean. Each room has a patio overlooking the water. The beds were extremely comfortable. The mini bar offers both complimentary waters and sodas. Although the hotel offers tours, we choose to take a 2 day private tour from Easter Island Spirit. I would highly recommend that tour company as well. We also rented a car so we had the independence to see some of the sites on our own.

It is true that the staff can be somewhat sparse. Yes, the minibar was not restocked promptly. However, if I asked anyone for assistance, it was acted upon quickly. I also felt as though the staff genuinely wanted to make you happy.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. The location was great. It was quiet, beautiful, clean, and luxurious. It absolutely added to our Easter Island vacation experience. .

We spent one night at the hotel every catching up with a Ship. We had a suite with a view and this review is consistent with others that mentioned oversized room, pleasant and natural furnishings and an interesting design.

Breakfast was included with the room, and it was very good. I had heard that the food was mediocre, but that was NOT our experience.

Our experience with the staff and the service was excellent. But, we never asked for room service and I never used the telephone so....

The check out time was 11:00 AM. Due to the fact that our ship was not due to arrive until around noon, we asked for late check out. They said "no problem." to a 12 noon check out. A little later, we decided to tour the island during the day, and we asked if we could check out even later. Again, we were told "no problem. The room is not otherwise booked." And they meant it: it was not a problem.

I had an issue with the air-conditioning because its dials did not seem to work. A little down the road, I realized that it must be a dehumidifier and that the best way to handle the climitization is a combination of it and the ceiling fan. This worked better than a "pure" air conditioner and kept us very comfortable during the day and through the night.

I suspect that all of the rooms are good, but I cannot know for sure because we were very happy with room 10 where we stayed and did not check out any others.

In short, I highly recommend the place.

Loved the Hangaroa. We booked into a Maunga Suite, which was a single oversized room that incorporated the sleeping area as well as a seating area. Not really a suite, per se, but was still nice considering it was just for 2 of us. A nice outdoor patio overlooking the ocean was also very pleasant for sitting and relaxing. Despite being very close to the road, the room was super quiet.

The service here was a bit spotty. The front desk was either excellent, or terrible, depending on who happened to be sitting there. If Andreas was there (a Rapa Nui local who was educated in the US), the service was fantastic as he went out of his way to make sure everything was attended to. But other front desk staff would barely acknowledge your presence. One person was so clueless that when I asked her to kindly make a dinner reservation for us at a local restaurant, she refused, and tried to tell me that they aren't allowed to book reservations at anyplace other than the hotel restaurant. Huh?!? Fortunately, Andreas happened to walk by, and he said "sure, no problem."

Food and beverage service was downright poor. No service at the pool at all. Zero. Not even a place to go get something and bring it back to the pool. Lame service at the nightly "sunset cocktail hour". If you were sitting outside watching the sunset, someone *might* come by to ask if you want something, or they might not. At least 2 or 3 times, we had to walk inside, go to the bar, and ask for something, at which point they would bring it out.

Despite having supposedly 3 restaurants, the availability of food was quite limited. One restaurant was only opened for breakfast. Another seemed to be open only at dinner time. We never saw the 3rd one open. Want something to eat at, say, 6pm? Good luck with that.

Still, despite the service shortcomings, we enjoyed the stay and would recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the road have the best ocean views, yet they're quiet

This is a beautifully designed hotel, reflecting the influence of the traditional homes of the Rapa Nui people. Each room feels like a cottage, with patio and views of the ocean. We had the Premium Package that included all meals, beverages and tours of the island. It was expensive, but worth it.

The food is good, although a little more variety would be nice, and we wish they had used some of the other dining spaces (only one space was open during our 5 day stay). The restaurant staff is friendly and they want to be helpful, but they lack training and experience.

On the other hand, the front desk staff was neither friendly (quite the opposite) nor helpful, and they too lack training and experience. They couldn´t answer even the most basic questions and were not even able to give us change for a 20,000 Peso note (about $10 US).

I´d like to see much more focus on customer service. This has the potential to be a great hotel.

Fabulous location overlooking the ocean, a beautiful compound, spacious rooms and service that will satisfy every traveler, there is no better place to stay on Easter Island. A very unique stay.
If you're traveling with a group, solo or with family and friends you will feel at home at Hangaroa.
The dining room has a wonderful breakfast and lunch that you can eat out on the terrace or inside overlooking the beautiful blue ocean. All rooms have a nice patio/terrace to enjoy sunset.
I'm looking forward to returning next week!
