“Great value and very welcoming”

I first visited Easter Island in 2003 and prices were very reasonable then. What a change a decade makes and now everything is very expensive, especially if you've come from say Peru or Bolivia. The host Carmen speaks little English and once you're in your room, you won't see much of her except perhaps at breakfast. One morning I woke up very early to catch sunrise at Ahu Tongariki and Carmen had prepared a cooler box with my breakfast all ready for me to take.

The room was basic but clean and very quiet. The only downside is the location is a bit of a walk from the town centre. If you can't get a taxi back in the evening then it's a 15 minute walk along the road, which is safe even very late at night but it's unlit, so use your phone's flashlight app if you can.

WiFi access is almost non-existent on the island although it works reasonably well at the airport. for tours and car hire I used Kia Koe on the main street - they were very good and well priced too.

We stayed here for 4 nights in a double room with ensuite bathroom. Carmen offers a wonderful Islanders welcome and assists where possible.

Accommodation a little tired but comfortable overall.

Location is an easy 10 minute walk along the sea front or through the streets into town. It's very quiet at night, lovely.

We had breakfast provided which was simple but substantial.

We would happily recommend this establishment with the proviso that your not paying Hilton prices so don't expect Hilton standards. This is a well run guest house with a welcoming and considerate owner.

The grounds are well tended with a seating area and sea view.

The cabanas are basic but nice. The shared kitchen is really nice to have. The view is wonderful. It is a little bit out of town (10 minute walk) up on a hill. This is a bonus, because it is much more peaceful here. There is a big yard with some chickens. The roosters do crow, but we found the baby chickens fun to watch. The yard is beautiful and full of flowers. Carmen is wonderful. She is a busy single mom, so don't expect a 5 star hotel experience. However, we always had everything we needed and Carmen helped us with everything. She even drove us into town for groceries and brought us homemade guava juice. She was always going out of her way to bring us something extra, such as fresh flowers in the kitchen or bread and jam for breakfast. She also invited us to church on Sunday to hear the beautiful singing. We felt like we were staying with a friend rather than at a hotel. Thank you Carmen!!!

Room Tip: The cabana on the end (farthest from the kitchen) has two windows, great for a cross breeze.

We did careful research in picking Cabanas Manatea, since prices in Easter Island are about the highest in the world. We had a group of 7 so booked the private cabin plus two of the rooms in the main building.

The cabin is quite nice. Very scenic and set back from the rest of the property. A good sized living room and kitchen with 2 bedrooms and bathroom. But for the roosters and dogs often crowing/barking through the nights it was restful sleeping. It is rustic but comfortable and good value.

Where things fall apart is the service (when you can find them, there is no reception). While friendly, the staff are very irregular in their upkeep. We booked the cabin for 4 people and they provided only 3 towels and 1 roll of toilet paper for a week. We had to follow up several times on each for more. Garbage is not removed daily, which is a major issue since the location is understandingly prone to attracting insects (from small ants to huge cockroaches). Also staff do not have strong English and will have inconsistent policy. One told us no fee for laundry if we provided the detergent while the other later insisted we also pay an extra $30. A ride into town costs much more than local taxis even if you are catching a ride when they are going anyway. Also, expect no refunds - one of our family members had a medical emergency and had to cancel - we notified Cabanas Manatea in advance but there was no wiggle room (also understandable). But insultingly, they mismanaged their own bookings and asked us to leave the private cabin we payed more for a day early since they had another group come in (we didn't go, it would have wasted a lot of limited vacation time to repack and unpack everything).

Overall a good stay if you don't mind frequent service hassles.

Tip 1: book the cabin, the rest of the rooms are small and crowded together.
Tip 2: put garbage outside after every meal to avoid attracting insect swarms.
Tip 3: the excellent museum is across the street, don't miss it!
Tip 4: the coast at the bottom of the road is beautiful (especially at sunset), and the best way to walk to town. Taking the main road is a long boring walk with lots of traffic.

Room Tip: Tip: the cabin is the best bet for a good stay. The other rooms where some family stayed were small...

We stayed 5 days on easter island and since the island is expensive chose budget accommodation. The cabanas were just fine -- we appreciated the kitchen as we made our own food and the property itself is quite scenic. It is a bit of a walk to town but we rented bikes for 2 days which was a great way of getting around. It suited us for the price.

Carmen, the host, was the best part of our stay -- very caring and drove us to and from the airport. She gives the best hugs! She has basic English so knowledge of Spanish will help.

Because of the harsh environment the rooms have a bit of wear, which means you may have some close encounters with the bug life so don't expect a hermetically sealed environment!

My boyfriend and I spent a week with Carmen at Cabanas Manatea and everything was just great. Because they were doing renovations, we had the entire Blue House to ourselves, including a kitchen and living room - which was great for cooking and spreading out our gear. The front porch overlooked the ocean and was perfect for watching the sunset. While the location was a bit far from town, ~15-20min walk, we really enjoyed the seclusion and quiet (minus the barking dogs, of course). Plus, I couldn't find a better price, not even close! Carmen was also such a sweetheart: she took good care of us, made sure we were comfortable, and - when my boyfriend had an allergic reaction to the detergent used on the sheets - she was happy to rewash the sheets with the detergent I brought. She even offered to wash our clothes for us! While this might not have been right for everyone, it was perfect for us!
