“excellent customer service”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

I was very pleased with Tupa Hotel. I value great customer service above all else and the staff at Tupa Hotel excelled in this category. They speak fluent English which was a plus as my Spanish is limited. The staff was also very responsive via email while I was planning my trip. This made for making arrangements and answering questions very easy.

I was pleasantly surprised to find I could rent a vehicle directly through Tupa Hotel. One more detail I did not have to go elsewhere to arrange.

The hotel staff also proactively notified me that my flight from Easter Island had been delayed. Tupa Hotel was aware of this even before the airline notified me. Plus, even though I had already checked out of my room, management at Tupa Hotel allowed me to rest in my room until my flight was due to leave. They did not have the room booked that evening, so allowing me to rest there was very welcomed as my flight was very late at night.

The hotel includes a very nice breakfast which was welcome and convenient as its quite expensive to eat out on the island. It also allowed me to get a quicker start in the morning not having to go out for breakfast.

They provide free Internet access but at times it was rather slow and on occasion unusable. However not surprising considering the remoteness of the island.

The rooms do not have air conditioning or ceiling fans; however, simply taking a cool shower in the evening was enough to make for a reasonably comfortable sleep.

I agree with what people have said, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The beds and floors were clean. The rooms need updating and security seems to be an issue at night. We were told to lock our door to the outside, making for no fresh air in the room at night. We figured out a way to secure the screen so we could have fresh air. I think this should be a pretty easy fix for the hotel using local supplies. It is an old hotel, but that is part of the fun! Laundry service would also be a great addition, that would be charged for and support itself. Thank you!

Everyone was just great..! We would definitely stay here next time we go back... and this is not our first trip to the island of Rapa Nui. This time we were married in a traditional Rapa Nui tribal ceremony at Anakena Beach. To our suprise, we were greated when we returned from our reception with another reception arranged by Sergio... There was a homeade wedding cake and a whole new group of friends complete with champange there in the courtyard to greet us. The breakfast every morning was more than adequate. Fresh baked breads, pasteries, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juice... Again I've returned home from Rapa Nui talking about the food... no fertilizers needed, everything was fresh, homemade or homegrown. First thing you have to take into consideration is that you are 2500 miles off the coast of Chile, on the most remote, inhabited island on the face of planet Earth. I don't care how good the hotel is... the lagistics of their location will always be a factor, and you must take this into consideration when you walk out of the "comforts" of your own front door. There was no television, no radio, and no telephone... It was perfect..! You want fast internet... stay home..! Hotel rooms on Rapa Nui are not desinged to "hang out in"... If you went to Rapa Nui to hang out in your hotel room, you might as well go to Ames Iowa... Again let me mention that this was our second trip to the island, 8 days on the island is not long enough to see all there is to see, or "experience " what Rapa Nui really is... "A magical getaway"... When you leave the island you'll have more questions about it's "mystery" than you arrived with. Always remember... when in Rapa Nui... do as the Rapa Nui do...

We stayed in the 'Budget' room for 7 nights. Though a good size the room was grim, unloved and needed modernizing. We didn't want to spend any time there other than to sleep.

The hotel is in a reasonable location, short walk to the coast, town and Santander cash machine - the latter being quite important in this town.

They have a slow internet connection in the reception area. Breakfast was okay, nothing amazing but nice enough. Free airport transfer was convenient.

Everything is expensive on Easter Island, so if you plan on being busy touring the island then this hotel would make a good alternative to some of the more expensive hotels in the area (which I hear are also quite basic). If you just want to relax, best find another accommodation.

Room Tip: From what I saw, the Sea view rooms looked the best. Garden view rooms seemed dingy and overlooked.

Thank you for your review, we appreciate hearing your thoughts on how to improve our service. You are correct that many of our rooms are very simple, and basic. This is mainly because the cost of materials and labor here are so high we can only remodel small sections at a time so as to maintain our prices low for our customers. We have been trying to remodel and rebuild since our hotel first opened in the 1980s, but finding parts and replacements are difficult and we need to import them. Also, the majority of guests that stay with us are here to see the statues, not the inside of a hotel. For that reason, we are slowly remodeling the gardens, outsides, and public spaces before moving into redoing all the rooms.

We are currently working on removing the wall paper on some of our back rooms and repainting them so that they are more light and airy. This action came from an earlier Trip Advisor review, which we take very seriously. We hope this makes our customers' stay more comfortable, while still maintaing the island accessible by not charging as high as other hotels.

As you probably noticed, we try to serve home baked goods and fresh local produce for breakfast. Because our agriculture on the island does not produce many diverse products, and the majority of all the other foods need to be imported from Santiago, we are limited in what we can serve during breakfast. We are currently looking at how to improve this service, and are considering growing our own produce in the back portion of the hotel, but this may require more infrastructure before we can get it started.

The best thing about the Tupa Hotel was the service. I had sent them our flight information 2 months prior to landing on the island. They promised to pick us up but I was thinking after two months the flight information was either lost or forgotten about. Not the case. The manager of the hotel warmly welcomed us to the island with a lei and took us to the hotel. We checked into our rooms and found a basic but surprisingly clean place to lay our heads. Maid service daily was also a welcome surprise. The breakfast was great with fresh fruit, cereals, breads, coffee and tea.
Now for the downsides. The internet was only in the common areas and painfully slow. It was only really good to check email and that at times as a stretch. Also, no ashtrays anywhere on the property made it difficult for me to throw away my cigarette butts.
We had a wonderful time on the island with Tupa being a very decent place to stay.

Hotel with basic facilities, very clean, friendly & helpful staff, transfer from/to the airport, close to main street and coast. We stayed in the newer building, large room, but with basic facilities, nice sea views. Internet in the lobby very slow especially in the evenings.

Stayed at Hotel Tupa for 8 nights in September/October 2012. The Hotel was chosen because it seemed to be a small intimate hotel with no frills, in a very convenient location, and because it had rooms with a view of the sea. Booking went without a hitch, and with reassuring return e-mail asking for arrival times in order to pick us up at the airport. They also warned us they didn’t accept credit cards. On arrival at the airport we were presented with lei garlands and on the way back to the hotel they gave us a little sightseeing tour of Hanga Roa, the main town. The rooms were rather basic but large with nice en suite facilities, and fresh flowers everywhere. The view was OK, but you had to stand to really see the Sea. Some of the older rooms may have a much better view. Breakfast included fresh fruit and cake and took place in a spacious room with a beautiful view of Hanga Roa and the Sea. Internet was only available in the sitting room and with luck in the dining room. Staff not very informative, but when asked were helpful and multilingual. Except for one night with loud music from some place in the neighbourhood it was a very quiet and nice place to stay, with soothing clucking sounds from a mother hen with chickens running about just outside the room.
We would certainly stay there again if we were to visit Easter Island again.
