“Possibly our best hotel in South America”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2012

Firstly, congratulations to whoever selected the staff for this hotel. Everyone from the manager, receptionists, chefs, waiters and cleaners were competent, friendly and welcoming.
From our welcome drinks to our check-out everything went perfectly.

The main features:-
1. The bungalows are spacious, comfortable and private.
2. The food is delicious, especially the islander-style buffets. You will never be hungry here.
3. The views from some huts are excellent as are the water views from the administration, dining and pool area.
4. The ocean and a nearby moai is a 20 minute walk away.
5. It was quite unusual and eerie to wake up at 7am to darkness and just sit out on the front terrace lounge admiring a million stars (but take mosquito repellent).

The only downsides are:-
1. The town is a long walk away. But as this place is self-contained and with bus tours picking you up it doesn't really come into play.
2. This place is expensive.

But it is a fantastic place to splurge at the end of a hectic South American holiday.

Room Tip: One hut IMO is better than all the others. I'm not telling you which one but it is a long walk f...

We just came back from 4 days on Easter Island or Isla de Pasqua. We flew from Santiago to Hanga Roa on LAN airlines. Flight takes 5 hours and if you can afford it, buy business class, it is great. Hotel staff picked us up, included in the package. We had Bed and breakfast, we wanted to explore some in town restaurants, but ended up eating twice at the hotel.
Hotel rooms are like separate cabanas with beds and bathroom. Bathrooms have outdoor showers that look a little rugged, with cement walls and shower head on the ceiling. Cabana has beds raised on the podium, not sure what is the purpose of this. Beds are fairly comfortable. Rooms are cleaned daily, but they use some kind of smelly chemical to clean the floors and wood. When you come in to the room after daily service it is hard to breathe.
Cabanas have big sliding doors to outside and couple of chairs to sit in and watch sunset.
Be careful when you sit down, some are broken.
Every cabana has different view. We had # 6, second row, looking directly at administration and kitchen windows. We could see sunset between buildings. It was not a bad location.
Best were cabanas in the third row, especially # 16 and #17. They have some of the most amazing sunsets I ever seen.
We ate breakfast in the hotel, included. it was buffet style, good variety, you can have eggs on request. Make sure you explain what kind of eggs you want, you might get something different.
They have selection of juices, freshly made, great, but flies are sitting on food and containers!
We ate dinner twice at the hotel. They have very limited menu, same every day, $50 per person, regardless of what you order. Average.
Second time was Easter Friday and they came up with an amazing BBQ.

Hotel is about 10 min drive to town. It is not clearly marked, easy to get lost. For the last part of the dirt road that leads to the hotel you need SUV. We rented a car from Insular. You do not need to worry about rental, they have many rental agencies in town and they all mostly rent Suzuki SUV's. Roads on the Island are horrible, unless you only use main road. But in order to see some sights, you need to drive on those bad roads.

Staff at the front desk speaks good English and they are very eager to help. Remember to return everything you borrowed from them, they have everything neatly recorded on your room bill.! Staff in the restaurant speaks very limited English and sometimes you order comes in different form then you wanted.

We visited Explora hotel to compare. It is located on beautiful part of the island, with gorgeous view, but very isolated and seemed empty. I would not choose Explora over Altiplanico. Double the price and not worth it. I would highly recommend renting your own car, gives you freedom to explore the island the way you want.

Overall, Altiplanico seems like good choice and I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for 3rd row cabanas, # 16 or # 17, best views.

We recently returned from four nights at the Altiplanico on Easter Island. Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel staff were very friendly, the setting was great with magnificent views of the sunset, the food was very good, and the bungalows were clean. We never had an issue with electricity or hot water, though we arrived at the end of the high season. The hotel arranged for the tours, and we paid the tour company directly.

My only complaint was that everything was relatively expensive. $50 per person for dinner if you get the three course. Drinks are extra. Water is 3000 pesos (about $6 USD), pisco sours are 8000 pesos (about $16 USD), and late checkout is $175 (beware!). That said, this is a very remote island, and resources are expensive. On the plus side, the very good breakfast buffet with made-to-order eggs and omelettes is free. I also hope that they pay their excellent service staff well. We ate lunch in town one day and did not find the prices to be that much better.

We were debating between Altiplanico and the Explora. As much as we paid at Altiplanico, we still ended up paying less than half of what Explora would have cost, and I feel like we got everything out of Easter Island that we wanted. So my recommendation would be to save the money, though I can see the appeal of the all-inclusive option.

We stayed at the Altiplanico hotel for four days. The bungelows are spacious and comfortable and there is a safe deposit box in each room. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet style and hot food (eggs and bacon) is made upon request.
The hotel is a little way out of town. During daylight there is a track via the beach area that can be taken into town that takes about 20 minutes or so. This isn't really suitable after dark though and walking taking the road route probably takes about an hour. We only tried this once and gave up after about 40 mins and hailed a passing taxi.

We stayed at Altiplanico for 6 days, 5 nights and it was a tremendous experience. The accommodations were great. A nice, clean room. Nice lobby. Great view of the ocean where we could watch the sun rise and set from our bed with the shades open.

The best part of the experience was the management. For the most part, the day managers spoke English and they helped us out with whatever we needed. And we were a major pain, repeatedly asking for their help! They never batted an eye at helping us change plans or talking us through our various options. Whenever we needed a car or got a tour, they had the vendor come up to the hotel to get us. They even were able to have a masseuse come from town and give massages in our room.

On cool extra--they had a hot tub that was heated by a wood fire overlooking the ocean. It was about $80 but worth the unique experience.

All in all, couldn't have asked for more.
