This was one of my favorite nights on the island! Victor Lka invites people to his home every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for a traditional Rapa Nui culture dinner and show.
This is not your average commercial whip-the-tourist-in type of deal.
Holding my Pisco sour in hand, I went to sit around the pit, waiting for the unearthing ceremony. One of the male dancers came out and showed us how they body paint and what the designs mean. Then he went around and painted the faces of everyone present. When Victor came to explain the ceremony, he said, "Don't take pictures. There will be time later. Right now I want you to open your hearts to the prayer and song." It was beautiful and heartfelt, as the men sang their blessings over the food and opened the pit.
Dinner was sausage, pork, fish, chicken, rice with corn, salad, plantain, cooked purple sweet potatoes. Dessert was fresh fruit.
I can describe the show as one of the most vigorous athletic shows I've ever seen and the emotion of the dancers were often evident. Afterwards, the dancers all stayed for pictures and conversation.
TRANSPORTATION to and from your hotel is INCLUDED in the price. I also loved that their children were present and just as cute as bugs in a rug.
